12 Apr 109/95 (91.5) Hcap 5f sf Donc 20/1 9-4 (96) 1/10 0.5l Chief Editor (-5) – [189.0]
tracked leaders in centre, headway 2f out, ridden to challenge and edged right over 1f out, led inside final furlong, kept on well
River Falcon (-3) was 1.25l 3rd
Lto:
20 Feb 500/110 (102.2) Hcap 6.5f gd/fm Nad 20/1 5-8-8 (98) 4/10 1.55l Balthazar’s Gift (+12) – [196.6]
soon led, headed 2f out, weakened
Balthazar’s Gift had previously finished 0.85l 3/12 in a 729/113 Hcap
Won over 5f here on season’s debut last year, but only made the frame once in 8 subsequent starts. Has had a couple of runs in the Gulf this winter and not disgraced in decent company lto. Runs here off only a 1lb higher mark than last year and in with a chance, though I’m not thrilled with the draw.

chased winner until hung right under pressure over 1f out, one pace after
Abbondanza had previously finished 0.75l 1/11 in a 117/95 Hcap (CB)
Has had better success on the AW than on turf, though did win a 180/98 3yo-Hcap at Newmarket last August.
Barney McGrew 6-9-2 OR 96 Dr 7 (87.9) (3.4)

held up in touch, headway 2f out, effort and not clear run entering final furlong, squeezed through to lead last 100yds
Lto:
08 Nov 259/100 (92.3) Hcap 7f sf Donc 33/1 8-11 (92) 2/21 0.2l Invincible Force (-4) – [183.9]
took keen hold in mid-division, headway over 2f out, challenged just inside final furlong, no extra near finish
Generally needs a couple of races to get in shape, but stable in good current form and would have some chance on his November run here over 7f.
Harrison George 4-8-10 OR 91 Dr 21 (76.3) (4.9)

11 Jul 68/85 (77.5) Hcap 7f hv York 15/2 9-1 (83) 1/13 0.25l Ink Spot (-2) – [161.0]
held up in rear, pushed along and headway on outer 3f out, stayed on well to lead near finish
Lto:
19 Sep 312/92 (86.2) Hcap 6f hv Ayr 10/1 9-4 (88) 2/27 2.75l Against The Grain (-4) – [167.3]
midfield far side, effort over 2f out, stayed on well final furlong, went second near finish, 2nd of 12 in group
Showed promise as a 3yo, culminating in 2nd in the Ayr Silver Cup. Came to hand early last year, seems to act on any going and has a good record here. A live contender from those drawn high.
Should be well worth watching with a cavalry charge down the course, though finding the winner will be pure luck as is usual in such races. I would hope that one of the above quartet can make the frame, though which one is another matter. From a VDW standpoint I suppose it would be Thebes, though personal preference would perhaps be for Harrison George.
