I used to enjoy Aintree, but I reckon I must have used up all my luck in years gone by. Still, try and get a winner today, as I’ll not be backing the favourite tomorrow.
Aintree 16.05 Gr 3 Handicap Chase 589 (140.8) 21f gd/sf -28 Run
Senior Citizen 8-10-6 (137) (6.1)
‘20/21 record 1/1/4 Best: 271.7 off 134 carrying 10-07 (Gr 3 HCh 20f gd Newb)
08/03/21 Gr 3 HCh (227/141.2) 20f gd Newb 10-7 7/1 4/14 3.5 l off 134
chased leaders, ridden and one pace when hung left between last 2, plugged on
Plus: class (F); distance (W); form run lto (34 days); down 1lb (wt);
Minus: going; course; up 3lbs (OR);
Verdict: only 7 chases to his name, but has won 2 of those and didn’t run badly lto returning from a 91-day break, should be spot on today; previously had finished 21.25l behind Modus (+16) in the Grand Sefton here, and an improving sort.
Two For Gold 8-11-8 (153) (1.4)
‘20/21 record 1/2/5 Best: 292.3 off 149 carrying 11 -6 (Cl 2 HCh 20 sf Warw)
06/03/01 List Ch (256/) 23.5f gd/sf Kelso 11-1 5/2 3/5 10.25 l off 154
tracked leader in 3rd, untidy 7th, closer 11th, chased leader in 2nd 4 out, ridden after 3 out, not fluent 2 out, disputing 2nd last, kept on run-in but headed for 2nd final 110 yards
Plus: class (Wn+); going (F); distance (W); form run lto (34 days); down 1lb (OR);
Minus: course (?); up 7lbs (wt); up class;
Verdict: has a good record over fences, especially as two of his losses were to Cloth Cap; does however have his share of weight to carry and may find too much of a task.
Modus 11-11-5 (150) (9.1)
‘20/21 record 1/1/2 Best: 281.7 off 150 carrying 11-10 (Cl 2 HCh 21f sf Aint)
05/12/20 Cl 3 HCh (396/138.4) 21f sf Aint 11-10 15/2 3/18 6.75 l off 150
held up towards rear, hit 13th (Valentines), headway chasing leaders after 3 out, went 3rd before the elbow, stayed on
Plus: class (Wn+); going (W); distance (F); course (W); form run lto; down 5lbs;
Minus: 125-day break; up in class;
Verdict: there are negatives in that the only 11yo to win was Always Waining when he won for the third consecutive year in 2012; plus he’s only had two runs this season, being off 125 days since running third in the Grand Sefton; shrewd trainer though, and has likely been aimed at this since December; genuine, and not without a chance of a place.
A blind pick as always in hopes of getting one placed and my main hopes lie on Senior Citizen, although I would not put anyone off Modus. And Two For Gold may have a little too much weight to carry.
