Not too clever yesterday, but it will get better I’m sure, maybe today.
Doncaster 2.00 Cl 2 Hcap 93 (95.3) 5f gd– 12 Run
Camacho Chief 5-9-1 (96) Dr 11 (101.0)
’19 record: 1/2/7 ‘20 record: 0/1
02/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/96.2) 6f AW Nwcs 9-4 33/1 4/11 7.25 l off 97 – 79.8
in rear, switched right over 5f out, not much room over 2f out, headway over 1f out, went never dangerous 4th inside final furlong
16/06/19 Cl 3 Hcap (78/83.0) 5f sf Donc 9-12 9/4 F 1/7 1.5 l off 95 – 88.0
took keen hold, chased leaders, effort 2f out, led over 1f out, edged left inside final furlong, driven out
Plus: going (F); distance (F); course (W); down 1lb (OR); down 3lbs (wt);
Minus: class;
Verdict: just the one win last year over C&D, but that was in Cl 3 and has never placed in Cl 2 in 6 attempts; has won on sf and gd, so gd/sf should prove no problem; had run over 6f at Newcastle 12 days ago and a distant 4th; all wins have come at 5f; 1lb above last winning mark; question about class.
Jabbarockie 7-9-3 (98) Dr 6 (100.4)
’19 record: 2/5/8 ’20 record: 1/0/1
07/06/20 Cl 3 Hcap (67/88.7) 5f gd Nwmk 9-7 7/1 1/9 1.25 l off 94 – 87.4
made all towards centre, pushed along over 1f out, ridden and hung right inside furlong, ran on
Plus: going (W); distance (W); course (F); down 4lb (wt); form run lto;
Minus: class; 4lbs penalty; up in class;
Verdict: was in good form to take a Cl 3 at Newmarket last week, for which he carries a 4lbs penalty; failed in only attempt in Cl 2, finishing 12/22 beaten 4.5l at York on final start last season, but that was also first attempt at 5.5f; has won from sf to gd/fm, so no problem there; question of class once more.
Embour 5-9-0 (95) Dr 10 (109.1)
’19 record: 3/6/14 ’20 record: 0/1/1
09/03/20 Cl 2 Hcap (156/90.5) 6f AW Wolv 9-7 4/1 4/7 0.37 l off 95 – 89.3
chased leaders, ridden inside final furlong, no extra
21/09/19 Cl 2 Hcap (1245/100.0) 6f gd Ayr 8-9 20/1 5/24 1.85 l off 95 – 95.1
mid-division far side, ridden if out, stayed on to chase leaders inside final furlong, never nearer
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (F); down 7lbs (wt);
Minus:
Verdict: won mdn on gd/sf as a 3yo, but generally runs on gd/fm or gd; has won over 5f as a 3yo, but majority races over 6f; very much at home in Cl 2, and is only 3lbs higher mark than for his last win; just a query about the distance and will they be going to fast for him.
Encore D’Or 8-8-12 (93) Dr 4 (101.3)
’19 record: 1/3/11 ‘20 record; 0/0/1
06/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/94.2) 5f gd/fm Nwmkt 9-0 22/1 6/12 2.85 l off 95 – 85.3
tracked leaders, pushed along 2f out, no extra inside final furlong
Plus: class (W); distance (W); course (W); down 2lbs (OR); down 2lbs (wt);
Minus: going;
Verdict: AW or non-hcap starts last when showing form and hasn’t shown form in hcaps on turf since the end of ’18; however, now below that winning mark; as an 8yo though, cannot be sure he will return to ’18 winning form.
Camacho Chief and Jabbarrockie have a question mark alongside the class element, and is the case of Jabbarockie he’s unlikely to overcome it as a 7yo. I’m also a little wary about the chances of 8yo Encore D’Or, as he has enjoyed much of his success on the AW and also in non-hcaps. So thinking that as an 8yo his best days may be behind him, I’ll pass on him too. There’s still that class thing bugging me about Camacho Chief, so I’m going to go with Embour despite a question about the distance. So Embour from Camacho Chief, and perhaps Jabbarockie filling out the frame.
Doncaster 15.10 Cl 2 Hcap 97 (93.3) 10f gd – 8 Run
Derevo 4-9-4 (96) Dr 8 (98.0)
’19 record: 3/0/5
11/10/19 Cl 2 Hcap (747/88.2) 12f gd/sf Nwmkt 9-3 8/1 6/19 12.25 l off 96 –
held up, ridden and headway over furlong out, kept on same pace
27/07/19 Cl 3 Hcap (78/90.3) 12.5 AW Nwcst 8-13 5/6 F 1/7 0.75 l off 91 – 88.0
always prominent, led over 2f out, ridden out
Plus: going (W); distance (W);
Minus: class; course (?); up 1lb (wt); down 2f; up in class;
Verdict: won over this trip in a Cl 3 Hcap at Pontefract and won over 12.5f at Newcastle, before stepped up to Cl 2 for the first time and failing in Old Rowley Cop; this is not as competitive dropping back 2f.
Fifth Position 4-9-7 (99) Dr 2 (106.2)
’19 record: 1/0/6 ’20 record: 0/1/1
02/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/95.0) 8f AW Nwcst 9-7 5/2 3/11 1.85 l off 99 – 97.2
prominent, led over 2f out, headed over 1f out, unable to quicken and edged right, stayed on same pace inside final furlong
Plus: class (F+);
Minus: going; distance; course (?);
Verdict: promise in the run at Newcastle at the start of the month, which suggested that today’s trip could well suit; however, I’m not sure there was enough to install him as favourite here.
Sky Defender 4-9-7 (99) Dr 7 (105.1)
‘20 record: 2/2/5
07/06/20 Cl 2 Hcap (97/99.5) 10f gd Newmkt 9-1 14/1 2/8 4.75l off 99 – 98.1
tracked winner, ridden over 1f out, no impression
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); form run lto;
Minus: course (?); up 6lbs (wt);
Verdict: won on the AW at 10f Lingfield and 12f at Kempton already this year, and was 2nd to stable companion West End Charmer at Newmarket last week; that might be better form than it looked as there were some fancied horses further.
Fifth Division is a warm favourite on the basis of his run at Newcastle on his return. He may well the right choice, but I think the price is a little short and am prepared to take a chance on Sky Defender who was only beaten by his stable companion at Newmarket last Sunday. I think both might prove too good for Derevo, although he should find Cl 2 easier this time. So I’m going for Sky Defender from Fifth Division and Derevo back in 3rd.
