Newmarket 14.25 Cl 2 Hcap 97 (98.0) 10f gd/fm – 9 Run
Davydenko 4-9-7 (105) Dr 1 (102.7)
’19 record: 4/0/5
12/09/19 Cl 2 Hcap (156/95.7) 10f gd/fm Donc 9-7 11/10 F 1/7 1.5l off 98 – 95.7
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W);
Minus:
Verdict: won 4 out of 5 last year, only failure being in the Britannia Stks at Royal Ascot; proved that all wrong by winning a Cl 2 at Newmarket and for his final outing won a Cl 2 over 10f at Doncaster; raised 7lbs for that, but everything else a plus.
Good Birthday 4-9-0 (98) Dr 6 (106.2)
’19 record: 2/2/6
31/08/19 Cl 2 Hcap (324/95.2) 10f gd Bev 9-0 11/4 1/6 0.5l off 95 – 92.2
Plus: class (W); going (F); distance (W); course (F);
Minus:
Verdict: won over 10f at Domcaster and Beverley and finished 3rd in the Cambridgeshire on his final start; failed in King George V at Royal Ascot, but has given the impression that 12f might suit this year; gets a handy 7lbs from Davydenko and stable in great form having won the Guineas yesterday.
Desert Icon 4-8-12 (96) Dr 2 (107.4)
’19 record: 2/2/7
26/06/19 Cl 3 Hcap (140/86.6) 12f gd/fm Salis 8-12 11/4 F 1/8/ 0.25l off 85 – 73.6
31/08/19 Cl 2 Hcap (324/95.2) 10f gd Bev 9-0 15/8 F 2/6 0.5 l off 95 – 91.4
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); course (F);
Minus:
Verdict: won over 12f at Salisbury and ended season beaten 0.5l by Good Birthday (0) when favourite at Beverley; gets 2lbs today, which should be enough, but GB looked to have a little in hand and DI maybe won’t reverse the form.
West End Charmer 4-9-2 (100) Dr 4 (88.9)
’18 record: 1/0/3
01/06/19 Cl 3 Hcap (78/84.9) 10f gd/fm Donc 9-2 3/1 1/7 4l off 90 – 76.9
Plus: going (W); distance (W);
Minus: class; course (?);
Verdict: lightly raced for a Johnston horse, 6 starts in 2 years and winning half; comfortably hacked up in final race at Doncaster in a Cl 3 and raised 10lbs for that; could well prove a force this year.
The rest are out with the washing, so consideration confined to these. West End Charmer is only a potential spoiler, but with Johnston having 2 winners here yesterday and move for him should be noted. Desert Icon has the beating of Good Birthday at the weights, but the latter then went on to finish 3rd in the Cambridgeshire so should prevail again. However, the one they’ve all got to beat is Davydenko who overcame his Ascot blip to finish strong and promised more this year. So by no means original in taking Davydenko to win from Good Birthday, with perhaps West End Charmer edging out Desert Icon for third.
Newmarket 16.10 Cl 2 Hcap 87 (96.7) 8f gd/fm – 10 Ran
Bell Rock 4-9-5 (98) Dr 8
’19 record: 0/0/3
Plus: course (W);
Minus: class (?); going; distance;
Verdict: won a Cl 4 mdn here over 7f on only start as a 2yo; outclassed in 3 starts at 3yo; drops in class to make hcap debut, but done no favours off a mark of 98; stable in form, but no form to work with.
Ebury 4-9-3 (96) Dr 4 (99.0)
’19 record: 2/2/5
01/11/19 Cl 3 Hcap (91/91.7) 8f sf Nwmkt 9-3 7/1 2/12 1l off 93 – 88.0
Plus: going (W); distance (W); course (F);
Minus: class (?);
Verdict: consistent save for blowout in listed stks at Newcastle; promise in final start on hcap debut over 8f here; scope for improvement this term.

01/11/19 Cl 3 Hcap (91/91.7) 8f gd Nwmkt 9-1 5/1 4/12 2.5l off 91 – 81.3
Plus: distance (W); course (W);
Minus: class (?); going;
Verdict: got it together as a 3yo scoring a June hat-trick including over 8f here; failed to step up to Cl 3 however, and starts this season with Cl 2 test; btn 10l on only start on gd/fm, but won on gd and sf; just a question.
Shelir 4-9-4 (97) Dr 6
’19 record: 2/0/6
First race for O’Meara having come from the Dermott Weld stable where he won his first 2 starts in listed class, but failed to make the frame in the subsequent 4.
Like yesterday, this race has a lot more questions than answers and while Ebury looks the most likely, it’s best left alone.
