Well thank you for all your good wishes, I wish I’d chosen a better rave to return, but sadly we get some like that once in a while. This week we lost the Eider, but at least we’ve got the one at Kempton. However, despite there being 14 runners, I’ve got it down to just three; hope I’m right!
Kempton 15.35 Gr 3 Hcap Chase 570 (143.6) 24f gd/sf – 14 Ran
Last year – 570 (143.1) gd – 10 ran
Walt 14/1 8-10-6 (134) by 1l from Double Shuffle 8/1 9-11-12 (154)
Adrien Du Pont 11/2 7-11-9 (151) was 5l 3rd
Romain De Senam 8/1 7-10-9 (137) was 5.5l 4th
Talkischeap 4/1 Jt F 7/11-3 (145) was 9.25l 5th
Black Corton 8-11-12 (159) (163.0)
21 Dec List HCh (570/148.3) 24f hv Asc 14/1 11-12 9l 4/10 off 161 – 157.4
led until before 7th, pressed leader, in front again before 11th, pushed along when mistake and headed 2 out, weakened into 4th at the last
Another horse that prefers the better ground as he showed when 3rd at Ascot in November; has since run creditably under a big weigh there.
Plus: class (W); going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto; down 2lbs (OR);
Minus: 63 day break;
Verdict: gallant horse and likely to run his race, but maybe there to hold the weight down.
Adrien Du Pont 8-10-11 (144) (161.1)
21 Dec Cl 2 Ch (313/) 21f hv Asc 8/1 11-7 25l 4/5 off 147 –
held up in 5th, steady headway on inside 3 out, pushed along before weakened next, finished tired
Runs of only 1lb higher than when winning over CD and is 7lbs lower than when 3rd in last year’s renewal; hasn’t fared to two starts this year, but drying ground in favour.
Plus: class (F); going (W); distance (W); course (W); down 2lbs (OR); down10lbs (wt);
Minus: up in class; up in distance; 63 day break;
Verdict: going has come ‘right’ and may be the one of Nicholls’ four
Just A Sting 8-10-4 (137) (152.5)
27 Dec Cl 2 HCh (313/140.1) 24f sf Kemp 9/2 11-1 0.1l 1/11 off 134 – 152.5
mid-division, headway 8th, chased leaders 10th, chased clear leader 14th, pushed along before 3 out, closer next, challenged last, ridden to lead run-in, stayed on gamely, all out
Confirmed last season’s improvement with course win in December; likely to have improved more than the 3lbs he’s been raised and in with a shout.
Plus: going (W); distance (W); course (W); form run lto; down 11lbs (wt);
Minus: class; up 3lbs; up class; 57 day break;
Verdict: improving sort who may have a chance.
Have cut the field to just three this week and feel the ones with a chance may be Adrien Du Pont from stable companion Black Corton with Just A Sting in third.
