Well a little better on Saturday although as expected I failed to find the Gold Cup winner. Just a quick look today before I embark on trying to sort out tomorrow’s card.
Newmarket 17.20 Cl 2 Hcap 311 (72.0) 9f gd – 8 Run
3yo = 5lbs wfa allowance
Last year – 311 (87.2) gd/fm – 19 ran
Jazeel 14/1 3-8-10 (84) Dr 9 by 0.25l from Everything For You 5/1 4-9-6 (89) Dr 14
Escape The City 8/1 3-8-8 (82) Dr 3 was 2.52l 6th
Data Protection 4-9-10 (76) Dr 4 (73.3)
19 Sept Cl 4 Hcap (53/70.4) 8f gd/fm Pont 5/1 9-10 0.1l 2/8 off 76 – 73.3
tracked leaders, pushed along to chase leader over 1f out, ridden to lead inside final furlong, headed final strides
Three times a winner last season off up to 79, got back to winning ways at Epsom at the start of August off 72 and has twice finished runner-up since, the latest at Pontefract last week when Destroyer (-9) was 0.9l back in 3rd; runs off the same mark today and meets D on the same terms so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t confirm that running; has won over 8.5f at Epsom, but finished L/8 on his only attempt at 9f at York last season.
Plus: going (W); course (W); form run lto (8 days);
Minus: class (?); distance; up in class;
Verdict: question about the trip, but in good heart and a contender.
Escape The City 4-9-8 (74) Dr 2 (77.5)
09 Sept Cl 5 Hcap (34/72.2) 10f gd/fm Bri 4/1 9-2 0.75l 1/8 off 70 – 69.3
close up, headway over 1f out, led inside final furlong, ridden and ran on
Runs off an 8lbs lower mark than when a credible 6th in last year’s renewal; made use of that falling mark to win at Brighton earlier in the month when dropped back to 10f ; carries a 5lbs penalty for that, but that more than counteracted by his rider’s claim.
Plus: class (F); going (F); distance (F); course (F); form run lto (18 days);
Minus: 5lbs penalty; up 6lbs (wt); up in class; down in trip;
Verdict: could well be the target and a contender.
Destroyer 6-9-1 (67) Dr 3 (69.3)
19 Sept Cl 4 Hcap (53/70.4) 8f gd/fm Pont 7/1 9-1 0.85l 3/8 off 67 – 62.9
led, ridden over 1f out, headed inside final furlong, stayed on
Won off 78 over 8f here last season but not the most prolific of winners (3/38) and mark has slid some way since; however, best effort for a while when just behind Data Protection (+9) at Pontefract last week; runs off the same mark today, but something to find with DP although is proven at this trip.
Plus: going (W); distance (F); course (W); form run lto (8 days);
Minus: class; up in class;
Verdict: ability declining with age and not the strongest contender perhaps.
Just a very quick look today and this seems the most likely trio, of which I feel that Escape The City may have been targeted at this and is preferred to Data Protection with Destroyer filling out the frame.
