Ludlow 3.05 Cl3 Hcap Hurdle 53/115 (104.8) 21f gd – 11 Run
This doesn’t look the sort of race to which VDW principles can be successfully applied – which are! – so I’ll try yet another different approach in the hopes of getting lucky.
Shenanigan – off 9lb higher mark and carries 21lbs more than when winning a novice at Taunton in December; something to prove with stable not saddling a winner in over 2 months.
Capitalise – not won over hurdles since November ’06 and not run over hurdles since February ’08, though is fit from disappointing winter on AW; not for me.
Cold Harbour – novice with just 3 starts over hurdles this term; not shown much yet, though last effort at Doncaster in January best yet. Given a chance, as trainer does well with his hurdlers here and is bang in form.
Archimboldo – by far the most exposed hurdler in the field and won over C&D here back in mid-October; however, now runs off a 10lb higher mark and that was the last success his trainer enjoyed, not even managing to get one in the frame this past month.
Quarl Ego – thrice-raced novice who hasn’t shown much yet; however, from a yard that’s flying and does well here, plus has the assistance of AP in the saddle. One for the shortlist.
No Regrets – had form over both hurdles and fences back in ’07; however, not seen since being PU over fences at Kempton in January ’08 until January this year when he was PU over hurdles at Wincanton. No regrets in passing on this one.
Cootehill – had some form in novice events in the autumn, but then fortunes declined like the rest of the stable runners; however, better effort back from a break at Doncaster at the end of last month. Not for me though.
Prince Zafonic – had shown little on the AW this winter and returned for a third try over hurdles at Folkestone last month; didn’t show much more under this code either and not hard to pass over.
Starr Flyer – showed promise over 16f at Stratford earlier in the month; however, it’s 16 months since Bailey saddled his last NH winner, so don’t hold your breath.
Butterfly Rose – won a maiden hurdle at Taunton in January last year, but failed to take to fences earlier this term; better effort at Hereford when returned to hurdles at Hereford last month, but might find the ground as fast as she wants it.
Quasimodo – it’s been a long time between drinks as they say, as only success came back in January ’06, 19 races ago.
Not a race where any sane man would have a bet, but I’d go with Quarl Ego and Cold Harbour as my best hopes for success.
