A FOAL is fighting for its life after inflammable liquid was thrown into its face - and set on fire.
The animal suffered serious burns to his nose, face and front legs as a result of the attack and is still being treated by a vet.
Derbyshire Police said today it happened between August 17 and 19 in a field off Alexander Terrace, Pinxton, near a water treatment plant.
The pony's owner, Kayleigh Appleby, had rescued three male coloured cobs from Ipswich.
The 28-year-old mother of two, said: "They were in a terrible state and were extremely emaciated.
“Over the next few weeks they had got stronger and we went away for a few days. A neighbour was keeping an eye on them and they had hay and water. We thought they were safe."
But on their return they found 4-and-a-half-month old Angus with his head between his legs.
Kayleigh said: "When we finally got his head up we could see that his entire mouth area and inside his nostrils had been burnt.
"He was actually my son Logan’s pony, he cried his eyes out when he saw the state of him.
"They would have had to have pinned him down to either spray or rub whatever substance they used to burn him. The ponies are very nervous because they were mistreated so badly previously."
Angus was taken to the vets where he was given a variety of shots and vitamins to help him recover.
However, the burns were not only on his face and further injuries were discovered on the backs of his knees.
Kayleigh said: "We think he had tried to put himself out by rubbing his head on his legs.
"But because his burns are on the back of his knees they are constantly being opened up.
"He is now so weak that if he gets down on the floor he can’t get back up. It’s 50/50 at the moment whether he will make it or not.
“I can’t understand why anyone would do this to a defenceless baby.
“Ponies scream when you hurt them, so how they could hold him down and burn him is beyond me.
“It’s inhuman. If they are ever caught they deserve everything they get.
“I have been around horses my whole life and have never heard of anyone doing this. It’s absolutely horrific.
“They are a truly evil person.”
PCSO Becky Davis said: “He’s fighting for his life and I’m appealing for help to catch whoever did this to the defenceless animal.”
During the evening of August 23 the field gate was also damaged and the lock smashed.
Anyone who has any information about either incident should ring 101, quoting incident number 231/24/08/15, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or contact the RSPCA.
