Champion trainer Paul Nicholls dominated last year’s totesport Gold Cup with a stunning 1-2-3 and NEPTUNE COLLONGES (Cheltenham, 3.20) can ensure domination again by edging out stablemate Kauto Star this afternoon. With last year’s hero Denman looking a diminishing threat due to the ailments which have blighted his preparation, many will fancy 2007 winner Kauto Star to become the first horse in the race’s history to regain the crown. However, the King George VI Chase winner is still capable of a moment of madness and there are sound reasons for believing that Neptune Collonges, just a short head behind his illustrious compatriot in third in last year’s renewal, can reverse the placings and hand owner John Hales his biggest win in a race that proved a trip too far for his star One Man. Shropshire businessman Hales has long harboured an ambition to own a Gold Cup winner and his powerful grey has a great chance of realising those dreams if he can produce a similar performance to 12 months ago. There is a school of thought that says he may have finished closer to Denman had he not tried to mix it with ‘The Tank’ on the final circuit and errors at three of the last four fences didn’t aid his momentum as the race’s pace was at its fiercest, but he bravely stuck to his task after the last to close on his two stablemates. Admittedly, his jumping has been his downfall on occasions, costing him victory in the Lexus Chase when he crashed out two from home when holding every chance. But intensive schooling paid off when he won last month’s Irish Hennessy and he looks value to upset Kauto Star. JUMBO RIO (Cheltenham, nap, 1.30) is taken to land the Triumph Hurdle for Ireland, while NORTONTHORPE LAD (Cheltenham , 2.05) looks a big price (50-1) in the County Hurdle. Today’s lay is Cappa Bleu (Cheltenham, 4.00). SCU'S PICKS OF THE DAY 1.30: Master of Arts
2.05: Take The Breeze

Ruby Walsh may have secured the Cheltenham riding honours, but Barry Geraghty was in superb form in his own right and the Irishman can land another big race with GIDAM GIDAM (Uttoxeter, 3.10) in the Midlands National.
The seven-year-old fits the profile of a number of previous winners of this marathon in that he carries less than 11st and is in the right age bracket.
The John Mackie-trained gelding last effort at Doncaster was another sound one and his stamina is already confirmed as he had previously run well at that track over four miles.
His handler sent out a 33-1 winner on the Flat recently and a number of his National Hunt horses have run well without winning.
Russian Trigger also made the shortlist, but his propensity to clout the odd fence means he was reluctantly overlooked, while smooth Ludlow winner Kilcrea Asla is another to consider.
Earlier on the card, MAKTU (Uttoxeter, nb 2.35) looks a good bet to lift another valuable handicap hurdle. Trainer Pat Murphy has placed the gelding wonderfully this season and the form of his Hereford victory last time took a major boost on Thursday when the sixth home, Kayf Aramis, took the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham.
Maktu still appears nicely handicapped and conditions should play to his strengths today.
QADAR (Lingfield, nap 5.15) looks a sprinter primed to hit top form and he should be backed to deliver a welcome winner for Nick Littmoden.
Although sometimes a tricky ride, James Doyle is a good booking for the seven-year-old, who should enjoy the likely strong gallop and still has the class to win a handicap of this nature.
Today’s lay is Shining Gale at Wetherby (4.00).
ALL THE TOP TIPS ROBIN GOODFELLOW'S DOUBLE: Maktu (Uttoxeter, 2.35) and Qadar (Lingfield, nap, 5.15)
GIMCRACK'S DOUBLE: Kilcrea Asla (Uttoxeter, nap, 3.10) and Secret Stash (Uttoxeter, 5.20)
CAPTAIN HEATH'S NAP: Lie Forrit (Newcastle, 3.50)
FORMCAST SPECIAL BET: Heraldry (Uttoxeter, 2.35)
THE WIZARD: Gold Thread (Wetherby, 2.20) UTTOXETER, 3.10
SCU PICKS THREEUTTOXETER, 3,10
COMPANERO takes time to warm to his task so this marathon looks ideal for Howard Johnson’s novice. Expect a much better effort than his latest well-held third over a shorter trip at Wetherby. NEWCASTLE, 3.50
The step up to three miles will play to the strengths of LIE FORRIT who has shown great fighting spirit. He has been in fine form at Ayr where he has won two of his last three starts over shorter trips.
UTTOXETER, 4.45
Tony McCoy is an eyecatching booking for David Evans-trained RASH MOMENT and expect him to produce a much better effort than his one-paced third at Stratford on his latest outing earlier this month.

MIA'S BOY (Doncaster, 3.55), who boasts a smart record on straight tracks, could be the answer to a typically fierce renewal of the William Hill Lincoln. Chris Dwyer's charge won over course and distance 12 months ago and was unlucky not to add to that Town Moor success last September when badly hampered a furlong out as Jimmy Quinn tried to deliver a decisive challenge. Connections are reportedly a little worried that the ground may be too quick for the five-year-old, but one of his best performances came at York last season under similar conditions and he appears to have a handy draw in 20. The Dubai World Cup dominates the tailend of the day and locally trained SNAAFY (Nad Al Sheba, 5.30) could be a value bet to upset one or two more fancied rivals. Admittedly, the son of Kingmambo has a class gap to bridge, but his victory in a Group Three race over a mile last time was achieved in a hugely impressive speed figure and he has proved a revelation since being equipped with the visor during the winter. The best bet on the domestic all-weather card is GALA EVENING (Kempton, nap, 5.20), who puts his unbeaten course record on the line in the Queen's Prize. Jim Old's stayer has won all three of his starts at the Sunbury venue and has been running well enough over hurdles of late to suggest that he can be a force in a competitive renewal of the handicap. Today's lay is Raincoat (Uttoxeter, 2.00). The bookies will take few chances with DENMAN (Aintree, 3.10) today, but if stable confidence is to be believed then last year’s Gold Cup winner can regain the winning thread in the totesport Bowl.
Denman overcame an interrupted preparation to run a blinder when going for a repeat at Cheltenham and only stablemate Kauto Star proved too strong.
Trainer Paul Nicholls is reportedly delighted with the nine-year-old’s work since and it is hard to envisage any of today’s rivals who were behind him last month reversing the placings. Former Gold Cup hero Denman is pleasing Nicholls.
Exotic Dancer landed the Bowl in 2007 and looks the chief threat but he has two and a half lengths to find with Denman who has done nothing but improve for his effort at Cheltenham.
Weighing up which of the Festival heroes from last month are capable of following up at Aintree is a poser for punters every year and only two horses managed to double up 12 months ago. With that in mind, there may be some value in taking on World Hurdle winner Big Buck’s in the opening event and siding with MIGHTY MAN (Aintree, nb, 2.00) who bids to protect his unbeaten record at today’s track, having scored on his three previous visits.
Henry Daly’s charge is lucky to be still racing after an injury at Punchestown two years ago that threatened to end his career but he made a highly respectable return at Cheltenham when finishing 26 lengths behind Big Buck’s.
In the circumstances, that was a fine performance from the son of Sir Harry Lewis, who is 8lb better off with the winner this afternoon and has been trained specifically for this race. There was no horse travelling better on the home turn in the Triumph Hurdle than STARLUCK (Aintree, 2.35) and this flatter track and better ground should play to his strengths more than chief rival Walkon, who finished two places ahead of him at Cheltenham.
Gary Moore is adept at preparing one of his charges for a big handicap hurdle and lightly-raced ALTILHAR (Aintree, nap, 5.35) appears to have slipped to a winning mark in the finale given that he finished fourth in a Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr two years ago.

VOY POR USTEDES (Aintree, 3.10) fluffed his lines at the Cheltenham Festival but should be backed to make amends in today’s Melling Chase. The eight-year-old was seen by many as the banker of the week, but he was never moving and jumping with his usual fluency and it was only guts and determination that carried him into second place behind Imperial Commander in the Ryanair Chase after a bad error four fences from home. Every horse should be excused an off-day and he came good in this race last year when demolishing Champion Chase hero Master Minded. GWANAKO (Aintree, nb, 3.45) was another winner on the card 12 months ago and he should go close to repeating his victory in the Topham Chase granted some luck. Trainer Paul Nicholls appears to have made a wise decision and kept stablemate Nozic in the race to keep the weights down and I was taken with the manner in which Gwanako travelled at Cheltenham before finishing fifth to Imperial Commander. DON’T STOP ME NOW (Musselburgh, nap, 5.45) has made rapid strides as a jumper for new connections this winter and returns to the scene of her two wins over hurdles.

With the Grand National behind us and the temperatures on the rise, the Flat season is about to sizzle with the Classic trials. Newmarket's Craven meeting next week (May 15-16) will bring out some of the big guns in the build-up to the 2,000 Guineas, the first Classic of the season at headquarters on May 2, with the 1,000 Guineas run the next day. But, instead of earmarking the obvious candidates among his 10 horses to follow this year, Racemail's form and tipping expert SAM TURNER has gone for lesser-known types who he hopes will be household names by the end of the season in November... BLUE NYMPH (Trainer: R Beckett) I was present to witness this daughter of Selkirk make her debut at Nottingham and she impressed with the manner of her finishing effort over an inadequate mile. She races in the colours of stablemate and Oaks winner Look Here and it would be no surprise to see her take high rank granted a normal rate of improvement.
PALACE MOON (Trainer: H Morrison) Routed a competitive field of handicappers at Doncaster on his comeback and is clearly a sprinter of immense potential. Related to the Group One-winning Sakhee's Secret, the son of Fantastic Light has clearly improved for being gelded and is one to follow.
CASCATA (Trainer: L Cumani) Began life at a modest level, winning a Great Leighs maiden in workmanlike fashion last November. Bred to improve markedly over middle distances and holds an entry in the Oaks. One to keep on side given her pedigree and quality of handler.
CRIMSON FERN (Trainer: M Saunders) Began the last turf season on a rating of 65 and made astonishing progress to wind up on a mark of 96. Made an encouraging return to action in a warm Listed event at Lingfield and one to watch when returned to Sandown, a track she has shone at previously.
FEET OF FURY (Trainer: M Brisbourne) Has displayed more than a modicum of ability in three starts which have served to see her handicapped. She was denied a run several times behind Makaamen at Doncaster and should pay her way.
HARRISON GEORGE (Trainer: R Fahey) Progressive handicapper who was more than a shade unlucky on his Doncaster comeback in a competitive event. Seems as effective over six or seven furlongs and goes on any ground.
ICELANDIC (Trainer: F Sheridan) Routed a competitive field at Doncaster last term, taking the drop to 6f in his stride. Would want genuinely good ground or softer and should be followed in Listed events over six or seven furlongs.
IMPLICATION (Trainer: E Dunlop) Left behind a modest Newmarket debut to run a race full of potential at Newcastle first time out this season.
LA DE TWO (Trainer: S Bin Suroor) Was sent off an unconsidered 40-1 chance on his debut at Doncaster, but belied those odds with a terrific effort considering he was slow to leave the stalls and raced green. His pedigree suggests he will stay middle distances and he holds entries in the 2,000 Guineas and Derby.
LENNY BEE (Trainer: D Brown) Attracted support before an encouraging Lingfield debut, in which he overcame greenness to chase home talented Bajan Tryst. He should improve mentally and physically for the experience and shouldn't waste much time winning a sprint maiden.
