Connections of the horses placed in the National have mapped out their plans and Balthazar King could be heading to France again. Balthazar King and Double Seven give vain chase to the winner Crabbie's Grand National winner Pineau De Re will now enjoy a well-earned summer holiday, but the horse that finished an admirable second to him, the Philip Hobbs-trained Balthazar King, may not be finished with yet this season. The 10-year-old began his season with victory in a French cross-country race in September before winning over the conventional fences at Cheltenham in October. He then clinched the major cross-country prizes at Prestbury Park in both November and March. Hobbs is looking forward to another trip across the Channel with his charge at the end of May and has already mapped out his route back to Aintree next season. The trainer, who also saddled Chance Du Roy to finish sixth in the National, said: "Both horses are absolutely A1 this morning and we were delighted with both of them.

Tom Peacock pays a trip to Claines in Worcestershire to welcome home Grand National-winning resident Pineau De Re. Newland celebrates with the winner Dr Richard Newland's stables at Linacres Farm lie along Egg Lane, as predictably rural, narrow and winding as it sounds like it might be, and the nearby village is essentially known only for having a particularly curious pub. Situated just three miles from the city of Worcester, Claines is now also home to the Grand National winner Pineau De Re. Looking placid and just a little tired as he appeared from his stable in a bright Crabbie's-sponsored rug, the 11-year-old Pineau De Re was greeted by the friends and family of Newland and his owner, John Provan, as well as journalists, camera crews and dozens of others wandering in from up the road. The Mug House, an ancient and reputedly haunted hostelry accessible only via the church graveyard, was the first port of call for connections on their return from Aintree. "There were about 300 people there having an impromptu party," said Newland. "I hadn't realised how much it had touched people - there were so many locals who were excited about a horse from Claines, a horse from Worcestershire, who had won the National." Newland, who accumulated wealth first as a general practitioner and then by establishing the private Newhall Medical Practice in Birmingham, seems to have life cracked. He built 12 stables next to his house and the gallop overlooks a stunning vale. Interested in racing first as a punter and then an owner, his curiosity led him to start training a few horses just for fun. This is no amateurish set-up, though, as the results have shown. He landed Cheltenham's Coral Cup in his first season as a permit-holder and regularly supplies winners for Tony McCoy and Sam Twiston-Davies, who usually rides Pineau De Re. His half-a-dozen staff, like the hero's groom Milly Murray, are all bright and impressive while Rod Trow, assistant trainer and main man when Newland is required in the business world, is an accomplished sports coach. "Sam has first choice here but he had to ride Tidal Bay for Paul Nicholls," Newland said. "It was brilliant winning with Leighton Aspell, a great jockey who I was happy to have, although at the same time I was sorry Sam missed out. "I don't know if you spotted, but Sam came out afterwards and gave us all a hug. That was class." Newland has no plans to expand the operation and went on: "This is a hobby, and I don't see why we need to change. "Sometimes with bigger trainers, who are under more pressure, I don't know if it's as enjoyable. I'm in a fortunate position, and I'm keen for the enjoyment not to go out of it." Among the revellers still in the previous day's clothes was Provan himself, who was eager to scrub up before joining Newland on a chartered helicopter to Market Rasen to watch the second of his three horses with Newland running. It was a shrewd call as Dalmo was to win, as later, was stablemate Ardkily Witness. Glasgow-born Provan once rode against Princess Anne, who presented him with the National trophy, and now runs a printing and packaging company in Birmingham. "We were going to go back home to Derbyshire but we had to come back here and we somehow persuaded the taxi driver to take us," he said. "As soon as I got in the pub I was drenched with champagne. We stayed in the local bed and breakfast, but I hadn't even brought a change of clothes. I've lost my voice as well." He went on: "I've known Richard about 25 years now. When he finished medical school we were both living in a village called Marston Montgomery in Derbyshire, and I was three doors down. "Richard liked to go to Cheltenham with the lads and we'd often go racing together. I rode as an amateur jockey and Richard was interested in learning about it. "We've owned dozens of horses, and had plenty of failures. One day Richard just said he was going to train a point-to-pointer. He got three horses and it has just progressed from there." Newland and Provan quickly decided Pineau De Re will have a summer holiday before next year's National is considered. "He's good today," said Murray. "He can be quite strong on the gallops but he's an easy horse to deal with." Newland said: "He's not the biggest horse, but staying is his forte and he took to Aintree. "I actually fancied him to win the Pertemps (he was third) and it won't be easy to place him next year over fences with his handicap mark so we could go down the hurdling route before coming back again."

Ffos Las, 6 April 2014
The Stewards gave permission for the first two fences in the home straight and the first fence in the back straight to be omitted in all steeple chases due to ground conditions.
2.00, first race
The record of vaccinations in the passport of MILBURN, trained by Gail Haywood, did not comply with the Rules of Racing. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (E)18 and fined her £140.
3.40, fourth race
The Stewards gave permission for the open ditch in the back straight to be omitted due to ground conditions.
4.10, fifth race
The Stewards gave permission for the open ditch in the back straight to be omitted due to ground conditions
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Richard Johnson, the rider of REV IT UP (IRE), placed second, from the second last flight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Johnson for 2 days as follows: Sunday 20 and Monday 21 April 2014.
06/04/2014
Market Rasen, 6 April 2014
1.45, first race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, DALMO, ridden by Miss A E Stirling and trained by Dr Richard Newland, compared with its previous run at Huntingdon on 12 March 2014, where the gelding finished eleventh, beaten by 47 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that DALMO benefited from both the drop in class and the re-fitting of blinkers and the gelding also appreciated the good ground on this occasion. They ordered DALMO to be routine tested.
2.15, second race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference on the run to the line. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that HERECOMESTROUBLE, placed second, ridden by Brian Hughes, had interfered with IN THE ROUGH (IRE), placed third, ridden by Dominic Elsworth. They found the interference was accidental and had not improved HERECOMESTROUBLE’s placing. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered.
2.45, third race
The Stewards noted that WITHOUTDEFAVOURITE (IRE), placed third, had interfered with CHURCH FIELD (IRE), unplaced, which in turn interfered with GO WEST YOUNG MAN (IRE), placed second, which in turn interfered with TENMOKU, unplaced, leaving the back straight but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
4.25, sixth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, TAYARAT (IRE) ridden by Joe Cornwall and trained by Michael Chapman, compared with its previous run at Uttoxeter on 29 March 2014, where the gelding finished fourth of four, beaten by 29 lengths. They noted the trainer could offer no explanation for the gelding’s improved form. They ordered TAYARAT (IRE) to be routine tested.
5.00, seventh race
The Stewards noted that INSIDE OUT, unplaced, had interfered with GRANDMA SMITH, unplaced, on the bend into the home straight but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.
5.30, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference on the run to the line. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that PRETTYASAPICTURE, placed second, ridden by Robert Thornton, had interfered with the winner, CHILLY MISS, ridden by Brian Hughes. The Stewards found Thornton in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his horse to drift left, thereby causing interference. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.

Denis O’Regan, the rider of WITHOUTDEFAVOURITE (IRE), placed third, reported that the gelding hung right.
Andrew Tinkler, the rider of DROMBEG WEST, unplaced, reported that the mare suffered interference in running from a faller.
3.55, fifth race
The Veterinary Officer reported that PALOS CONTI (FR), unplaced, trained by Brian Ellison, had bled from the nose.
5.30, eighth race
Kielan Woods, the rider of STAND ‘N’ BOOGIE, unplaced, reported that the filly hung left.

Aspell giving it his best shot
Grand National-winning jockey Leighton Aspell felt his time away from the sport made him appreciate every aspect of it even before hitting the headlines with Pineau De Re at Aintree on Saturday.
Aspell, 37, lost his appetite for the game at the end of the 2006-07 season and by that July had decided enough was enough, handing in his licence.
The following summer he began working for John Dunlop, but started to miss everything before reapplying again in April 2009, after which his career has taken off once more.
One of the more grounded members of the weighing room, Aspell had a quiet night after the Crabbie's-sponsored race, driving back down to his Sussex home and travelling back north to Market Rasen for four rides on Sunday.
He said: "Since straight after the race it has been madness - I was speaking to the BBC at 6.30am. There was no way I was going to give up my rides today, though, they were booked well in advance and I picked up a spare.
"We haven't had chance to celebrate yet, my parents flew back to Ireland last night and we had to get back to Sussex. I'll catch up with family and friends tomorrow night as it is a quiet start to next week. We'll have a party in a couple of weeks.
"I've had messages off people I haven't seen or heard from in a long, long time - it's been great. People have said I was a bit nonplussed after the race, but it was a combination of being speechless and exhausted. I'd done a light weight the race before and he is a small horse and I had to sight tight a couple of times.
"He made a couple of mistakes after Tidal Bay barged into him at the 13th and he was a bit guessy at the next couple, but he got back into his own zone after the Canal Turn. He jumped the last few best of all.
"I think that was just my fifth ride for Richard (Newland) but I'd been lucky that the few I'd had had run well and he'd stuck with me. He said he booked me because of the ride I gave Supreme Glory (second in the 2003 National) all those years ago and thankfully those are the things that people remember."
He went on: "I was up at 6am this morning, I have a pre-training business so I'm always up early mucking out. My wife helps me, and I rent a barn off Amanda Perrett.
"The reason I retired was because I was having a quiet time. What I should have done was just have a long break over the summer because I'm always quiet then anyway. I'd got a bit stale and was a bit tired. I wasn't enjoying the travelling and everything else.
"I picked up a job with John Dunlop in the summer and after a while I got the bug back, spoke to some trainers and they were very positive so I decided to reapply. I missed the competitive edge, I was still young enough and I still had it so I wanted to try again.
"It makes you appreciate everything more. It's a short career and you get one crack. If you're fit, healthy and able you should give it your best shot.
"I've had a good year already before this, Oliver (Sherwood, main supporter) has his best crop of youngsters for some time and they've stayed healthy all season. After this, you never know what doors may open, I'll be riding for the same people but any other rides or offers will be greatly appreciated."

Balthazar heading to France
Philip Hobbs has pencilled in a cross-country race in France for Balthazar King after his terrific performance in finishing second to Pineau De Re in the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.
The 10-year-old has had a superb season, beginning with victory in a French cross-country contest in September. He went on to win over conventional fences at Cheltenham in October before clinching major cross-country prizes at Prestbury Park in both November and March.
Hobbs is looking forward to another trip across the Channel with his charge at the end of May and has already mapped out his route back to Aintree next season.
The Somerset handler, who also saddled Chance Du Roy to finish sixth in the National, said: "Both horses are absolutely A1 this morning and we were delighted with both of them.
"Balthazar King ran a fantastic race and he's an amazing horse, really. It's obviously frustrating to come so close and not win, but you have to be delighted with how he performed.
"The plan is to go to Le Lion-d'Angers for a big cross-country race on May 29. After that he'll have a break and I would imagine he'll come back in the cross-country race at Craon in early September, which he won last year.
"Now his handicap mark has shot up to 159, I don't think he'll run in the race at Cheltenham in October, but he'll probably run in the cross-country race at the Paddy Power meeting in November again. Then he'll have a winter break, as we know he doesn't go on winter ground.
"With his new mark the cross-country race at the Festival will be difficult for him as it's a handicap, so we might just miss it next year and go straight to Aintree. We know he goes well fresh, so that's what we might do."
Chance Du Roy may not be seen again until defending his title in the Becher Chase over the Grand National fences in early December.
Hobbs said: "Chance Du Roy ran very well and looked to have the better chance of the two at the third-last, but he hasn't got home on the day. He won the Becher last December, so I would imagine he'll go there again and it will probably be his next run."
=========================================== Normans conquest for Arvika
Arvika Ligeonniere led home a one-two for trainer Willie Mullins as he swept to an easy all-the-way victory in the Normans Grove Chase at Fairyhouse.
The Rich Ricci-owned nine-year-old bounced back after being pulled up in the Queen Mother Champion Chase as he took Grade Two honours with the minimum of fuss in the hands of Paul Townend.
Stablemate Twinlight was the only one of his four rivals to try to get in a blow to the 1-2 favourite, but it was a thankless task as Arvika Ligeonniere put in a round of slick jumping and won as he liked by three and a quarter lengths.
Mullins, who went on to a treble, said: "I thought he jumped particularly well. He was back the right way of going today. He'll go for the two-mile race at Punchestown. He seems to prefer going right-handed, but he has won a Grade One on a left-handed track. The ground is a big factor, too. He's a real brave chaser and we're lucky to have him."
The trainer went one better by saddling the first three home in the Grade One Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Novice Hurdle Championship Final.
The winner was another Ricci runner Adriana Des Mottes, who was brought down at Cheltenham last time and was sent off the 15-8 favourite to make amends. She had her stablemate Florishwells D'Ete for company up front for most of the way and when that one weakened, kept on to account for Beluckyagain by seven lengths, with Urticaire third.
Mullins said: "It's like having three winners with Adriana Des Mottes winning and Beluckyagain finishing second and running fantastic, and getting some more black type for Urticaire. It was probably lucky that it (being brought down by stablemate Abbyssial in the Triumph Hurdle) happened so early at Cheltenham.
"We're lucky to get what we got today and we're happy with that. She's a fine big mare and she'll probably go for the four-year-old champion race at Punchestown. She's a big raw mare and she might not take much more racing. She loves that ground and Punchestown is usually nice and safe."
Valseur Lido (5-2) gave Mullins his treble when beating fellow Gigginstown House Stud-owned Real Steel in the Rathbarry & Glenview Studs Novice Hurdle.
Only 10th in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, Valseur Lido made it three wins from four starts this term as he collared the long-time leader at the final flight. Davy Russell pushed him out to score by four and a quarter lengths to complete a double for the owners after the success of Lieutenant Colonel.
Mullins said: "That was good improvement. It was a good ride from Davy, biding his time, and I loved the battling qualities of the horse. He was always a brilliant jumper, he pulled out a lot today and he didn't show that at Cheltenham. He'll head to Punchestown. He'll get an entry in everything and could go over a trip if the ground got better."
Lieutenant Colonel (5-1) got the better of Le Vent D'Antan to land the Coolmore NH Sires Fame And Glory & Sans Frontieres Novice Hurdle, giving Dessie Hughes a double.
A mistake at the last put paid to any chance Le Vent D'Antan had and Lieutenant Colonel, who had finished sixth to Faugheen in the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle, strode away to score by 10 lengths under Brian O'Connell.
Hughes said: "He's a smashing horse and he ran well in the Neptune at Cheltenham. He's only five so we might leave him over hurdles for next year and we've got quite a few to go novice chasing, so we'll give him another year to mature. With his pace, he could run in the better races, something like the Hatton's Grace back here."
Barry Geraghty carried on where he left off at Aintree when steering Some Tikket (6-1 favourite) to success in the Clarion Hotel Liffey Valley Novice Handicap Chase. After four wins at the three-day Grand National meeting, the jockey drove Hughes's charge to a five-and-a-half-length verdict over Shamiran.
============================================== Date awaited for start hearing
It is likely to be a couple of days before a date is announced for the referral hearing into the start of the Crabbie's Grand National.
The hearing was passed on to the British Horseracing Authority after jockeys chose not to go back to see the stewards at Aintree after an initial inquiry had been adjourned while the matter was considered.
Officials had called an inquiry after the starter reported the riders had lined up despite being advised by the assistant starter, who was positioned in front of the field, that it was not yet race time. The stewards' report said that when the riders moved forward they knocked down the assistant starter, Simon McNeill, thereby compromising the welfare of an official.
After taking evidence from the riders and the starting team, the stewards adjourned the inquiry to consider the matter. The report said that in attempting to reconvene the inquiry after the last race, the riders, who had not been given permission to leave the course, refused to attend.
"There has been no chance to arrange a date yet. I would think it would take a couple of days to arrange it," said BHA media manager Robin Mounsey.
"It's going to be slightly complicated because the jockeys will need to work out between them who's coming, how many of them are coming and when it is suitable for those who want to come to attend. It might take a bit of time to get a suitable date.
"There is very little to add now before the inquiry is heard at High Holborn by the disciplinary panel. This process will allow all involved the opportunity to review the chain of events and consider all relevant factors, hopefully in a more constructive environment. The hearing will consider the start and the events which unfolded during and after the stewards' inquiry."
Leighton Aspell, rider of winner Pineau De Re, told At The Races: "It's a very, very high pressure situation. Everybody is geed up, they've got their plans and their instructions and it's a very fine line.
"I promise you, we're talking fractions of a second away from it (the start) being absolutely perfect. I think the second time it was almost perfect again, but the tape caught one of the horses.
"No jockey wanted this to happen. We all got briefed and we all wanted to get off to a good start and get off well. It's very tight down there at the start, we're getting instructions left, right and centre. Unfortunately we had a couple of incidents, the stewards had their say and we put our points across. Hopefully it can get resolved as soon as possible."
Tom Scudamore rode The Package, and his father and former champion jockey Peter Scudamore told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme that the start had been a result of an "archaic" system and that the riders were unhappy at being handed two-day bans.
He said: "We're in 2014 and have not got a system that works. It's depressing. I don't blame the starters, the starters' assistants or the jockeys. We have an archaic system that is not fit for purpose."
On the riders not returning to hear the stewards' findings, Scudamore added: "There was confusion and the jockeys felt slightly aggrieved the inquiry was not held straight after the race. They did attend the first inquiry but were sent out because they did not have enough time to conclude it."
Several of the jockeys had to leave Aintree to catch flights to their next racing engagements and Scudamore said: "They were told that some could go because they had two-day suspensions anyway. The jockeys thought that, since it had been decided to ban them and their arguments had not been listened to, what was the point of going back in?"
============================================== Murphy praise for supreme Aspell
Trainer Pat Murphy paid a glowing tribute to Leighton Aspell following his triumph aboard Pineau De Re in the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.
Murphy has been one of Aspell's biggest supporters during his riding career and trained Supreme Glory, the horse that carried the rider to the runner-up spot in the 2003 Grand National in what was the jockey's first attempt at the world's most famous steeplechase.
Aspell also guided Murphy's star chaser to victory in the Welsh National at Chepstow 13 years ago.
Murphy said: "I was absolutely over the moon for Leighton on Saturday. Over the last couple of fences I was riding the race with him and honestly, I couldn't have been more thrilled if the horse had been my own.
"I just feel very proud to have been a part of his career and as I said to the owners of Supreme Glory last night, it's a shame it's taken everyone this long to realise what a top-class jockey Leighton is.
"When I spoke to him last night I reminded him of the old days, like when we went for the Galway Plate in 1999. Reaganesque was in front jumping the last and unfortunately he broke down on the run-in.
"He's been a first-class rider for a long time. He lost his spleen, which a lot of jockeys do, but other than that he's avoided serious injury and that's because he's a brilliant horseman.
"When he first told me he was packing up riding a few years ago I was in shock, as I thought he was riding as well as ever. Obviously he didn't have the appetite for the game at the time and he made absolutely the right decision to go away from it for a while.
"I think it gave him a different perspective, things were maybe going a bit stale for him and he came back refreshed.
"I think one of his biggest attributes is when he gets on the schooling ground he is absolutely fantastic. Because he is such a great horseman, he is brilliant at schooling young horses and teaching them their job."
=============================================== Rasen joy for National heroes
Crabbie's Grand National heroes Dr Richard Newland and Leighton Aspell were straight back to winning ways at Market Rasen.
Twenty-four hours on from Pineau De Re's triumph in the world's greatest steeplechase at Aintree, the trainer, jockey and owner John Provan returned to action in the rather more tranquil surroundings of the Lincolnshire track.
Having hosted the press at his Worcestershire yard in the morning, Newland, accompanied by Provan, arrived by helicopter weighed down by several bottles of champagne.
First to strike for Newland was the Ali Sterling-ridden Dalmo (13-8 favourite), who made just about every yard of the running to land the Racing UK Lady Riders' Selling Handicap Hurdle in Provan's white, green and black colours.
"They all count!" said Newland. "I've got no voice left now after yesterday and now that one. I thought Ali did really well there."
Provan said: "They are all sweet. I've been drinking champagne on a regular basis since straight after the National, we were even drinking it in the chopper. You could say we were on cloud nine!"
Newland then teamed up with Aspell to take the feature £12,000 Double M Novices' Chase with Ardkilly Witness.
The 8-11 favourite was second to Smad Place earlier in the season and was a gallant runner-up in the valuable Betfred Masters at Sandown. Another trip to the Esher venue is now on the cards, for the former Whitbread Gold Cup.
"I'd hoped he'd do it like that," said Newland. "His novice status ends in two months so I wanted him to have one more run against novices as he'll be in handicaps the rest of his life.
"His target is the bet365 Chase. I've only got 12 horses and a lot seem to be staying chasers, but I haven't specifically looked for them, it's just how they've turned out."
Aspell had a fall from Newland's Regal D'Estruval in the Wet Wet Wet Performing 16th August Handicap Chase, but happily both horse and rider emerged none the worse.
=============================================== Newland eyes Pineau repeat
Dr Richard Newland is already looking forward to seeing Pineau De Re defend his crown in next year's Crabbie's Grand National following his brilliant display at Aintree on Saturday.
The 11-year-old produced prodigious leaps at the final two obstacles and galloped all the way to the line up the famously punishing run-in to seal a momentous victory in the hands of Leighton Aspell.
The veteran warmed up for his Merseyside mission with a superb effort in defeat in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham over hurdles and Newland intends to take in a few races over the smaller obstacles as part of his preparation for the world's greatest steeplechase next term.
With the press gathered at the trainer's Worcestershire base to see the latest National hero the morning after his heroics, Newland was delighted to report his stable star to be none the worse for his exertions, and he will now be given a well-deserved holiday.
Newland said: "He gave 110 per cent but he's fine this morning. He's going to go up in the handicap now and it won't be easy for him next season as there aren't a lot of races. We'd like to bring him back and have another go at the National, so perhaps we'll go down the hurdling route and do a similar thing to this year. He deserves a nice summer break now."
The handler seems to be one of those rare people who would achieve in any field, and the residents of Claines, just three miles from Worcester, are grateful his passion happens to be for racing. Linacres Farm lies along Egg Lane, as predictably rural, narrow and winding as it sounds, and the nearby village is essentially known only for having a curious pub.
Looking placid and just a little tired as he appeared from his stable in a bright rug, the 11-year-old Pineau De Re was greeted by the friends and family of Newland and his owner, John Provan, as well as journalists, camera crews and dozens of others wandering in from up the road.
The Mug House, an ancient and reputedly haunted hostelry accessible only via the church graveyard, was the first port of call for connections on their return from Aintree.
Newland said: "There were about 300 people there having an impromptu party. I hadn't realised how much it had touched people - there were so many locals who were excited about a horse from Claines, a horse from Worcestershire, who had won the National."
The trainer, who accumulated wealth first as a general practitioner and then by establishing the private Newhall Medical Practice in Birmingham, seems to have life cracked. He built 12 stables next to his house and the gallop overlooks a stunning vale.
His half-a-dozen staff, like the hero's groom Milly Murray, are all bright and impressive while Rod Trow, assistant trainer and main man when Newland is required in the business world, is an accomplished sports coach.
Newland has no plans to expand the operation and went on: "This is a hobby, and I don't see why we need to change. Sometimes with bigger trainers, who are under more pressure, I don't know if it's as enjoyable. I'm in a fortunate position, and I'm keen for the enjoyment not to go out of it."
Among the revellers still in the previous day's clothes was Provan himself, who was eager to scrub up before joining Newland on a chartered helicopter to Market Rasen. Born in Glasgow, he once rode against Princess Anne, who presented him with the National trophy, and now runs a printing and packaging company in Birmingham.
He said: "We were going to go back home to Derbyshire but we had to come back here and we somehow persuaded the taxi driver to take us. As soon as I got in the pub I was drenched with champagne. We stayed in the local bed and breakfast, but I hadn't even brought a change of clothes. I've lost my voice as well."

Last year's Melbourne Cup hero Fiorente has been retired due to a tendon injury.
The six-year-old presented trainer Gai Waterhouse with a famous victory in the Flemington feature last November but suffered a surprise defeat in a Group One event at Rosehill on Saturday.
A release from Racing NSW stewards read: "Licensed trainer Gai Waterhouse has reported that Fiorente has suffered a near-fore tendon injury and has been retired from racing."
Fiorente began life with Sir Michael Stoute, winning at Group Two level before being sold towards the end of 2012.

Dude set for summer break
Monbeg Dude is set for his summer holidays after a creditable effort in defeat in the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.
The Michael Scudamore-trained nine-year-old was among the leading contenders for the world's most famous steeplechase and while he was unable to land a telling blow in the hands of Paul Carberry, he was far from disgraced in finishing seventh.
Scudamore is proud of his stable star's efforts and feels he now deserves a break before connections plot a potential route back to Merseyside next April.
Scudamore said: "He's come out of the race absolutely fine. He had a hard race, as you would expect, but all is well and he seems happy.
"He wasn't good enough on the day, but he ran his heart out. Paul said he was a bit keen early on and for that reason he hasn't quite got home.
"I would imagine that will be it for the season and we'll sit down with the owners and make a plan for next season in due course."
Scudamore sees no reason why his charge will not be back for another crack at the National in 2015 given he is still a relatively young horse.
"It's interesting that the last three Grand National winners have all been 11-year-olds. It's becoming a bit of a trend," said the trainer.
"He's only a nine-year-old, he seemed to enjoy himself on Saturday and it was good to see him jump well, which I think was most people's main concern beforehand.
"If all goes well and he is still enjoying himself, there is no reason why he can't have another couple of goes at the race, but we'll see what happens."

Kimmy In Case You Miss It It Starts Tomorrow Pontefract Races, A profile & tribute to the racecourse. Starters orders.. and They're off! at Pontefract Races the longest continuous circuit of its kind in Europe. Pontefract Racecourse is one of the best appointed courses of its kind in the country. There are modern bars and refreshment areas in all enclosures and the racing programme has been greatly improved in recent years. Closed circuit television is in operation on every race day, with televisions in all bars and refreshment areas. There are modern Tote facilities and kiosks throughout the stands. There is an off-course betting office in the paddock and second enclosure. One 'claim to fame' for the racecourse is that it is the longest continuous racing circuit in the country, at a little short of 2m 1f. This was exceeded when York completed its circuit for the holding of the Royal Ascot festival in 2005, and whilst York remains a 'circuit', there are no races held around the new link. For a great day at the races its a dead cert at Pontefract racecourse. The Course: Flat left-handed, fairly sharp, but a testing track. Please note this website is not owned by or affiliated with Pontefract Racecourse (Pontefract Park Race Co Ltd). =================================== 15:50 Tuesday 8th April Racing Tips - 08/04/2014
The feature handicap at Carisle isn't the strongest but I ilke the chances of Lucinda Russell's Ben Akram over the favourite. He finally got off the mark last time at Musselburgh and should improve for a little more of a test this afternoon over a furlong further and at a stiffer track. He ran poorly on penultimate start but that was in heavy ground and, more importantly, came at a time when the yard could't find winners. They are in much better shape now and 7/2 is a fair price. Stuart Coltherd's duo are of interest but the favourite is 13lb worse off for his meeting with the selection last year and is probably seen to better effect on genuinely good ground. Doubledisdoubledat is the danger but he has to be guessed at really having shown nothing prior to this handicap debut. Carlisle 15.50 - Ben Akram 1pt win
I put up Hawaii Klass last time at Musselburgh and the track really didn't seem to suit him. A course and distance winner here, he looks more at home at this galloping tack and I still think he can defy his current mark, 11lb higher than his last success. He was staying on last time before unseating but I don't think he would have won. However, the ground had softened dramatically that day and only 3 went off in the end from 10 declarations. Though he has won on soft, Hawaii Klass wants decent ground and hopefully it remains good to soft this afternoon. After his last win his trainer said 'He´s a half-brother to Harry Flashman and the whole family seem to prefer this time of the year, from March onwards. It´s a weird thing" and that's worth noting. His run back from a break here behind Etxalar was encouraging and I expect him to reverse that form on better ground and with a 5lb pull in his favour. The danger is Indian Voyage but Etxalar has a chance of holding him again given an 11lb pull in his favour from their December meeting. That makes the selection best of the lot of them and a really nice bet at 17/2. Tom Scudamore rides only 1 horse today, Ultra Du Chalet, whose mark has tumbled and is justifiably a 7/2 shot. I'm not convinced he's worthy of that though and will happily swerve. Carlisle 16.55 - Hawaii Klass 1pt e/w
As the flat season gets under way it's time to start swinging the bat at the code which will feature more and more throughout April. The feature handicap at Pontefract is interesting as we have a few course and distance winners to note. The main 2 are Las Verglas Star and Easy Terms, both of whom will appreciate any early morning rain. The former hasn't won for over 18 months but that last win did come here off 4lb higher so he should be a danger. It was a 4 runner race though and this looks more competitive. Sennockian Star, like many a Johnston runner, will be a danger if allowed to dominate but that looks unlkely given at least 3 others that have led in the past. I'd have Amralah over Centurius at the top of the market and couldn't put anyone off backing him at 7/2 but the bet of the race and day is Easy Terms. She won over course and distance first time out 2 seasons ago off 4lb lower and followed it up with a win at York off 3lb higher than she races off today. She returned to run 4th in this last year off 7lb higher, proving she is definitely worth noting fresh, when doing best of those held up and has a 3lb pull with Las Verglas Star this afternoon. How she is considered a 16/1 shot is beyond me. She should be half that, especially given a likely good gallop over the trip, something she could have done with more of 12 months ago. Pontefract 16.15 - Easy Terms 1pt e/w

Dettori jetting in for Treve work
Frankie Dettori is looking forward to putting the "finishing touches" to Treve on Tuesday morning ahead of her eagerly-awaited return to action in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp later this month.
Criquette Head-Maarek's Motivator filly took her unbeaten record to five with a mesmerising display in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris in October, with Dettori forced to watch from the sidelines due to injury as she sauntered clear in the hands of Thierry Jarnet.
As retained rider for owner Sheikh Joaan Al Thani, Dettori is set to get back on board this season and is struggling to contain his excitement just to be partnering the four-year-old on the gallops.
Speaking at Windsor on Monday, he said: "I'm going to fly to Chantilly tonight and I'm going to give her the finishing touches tomorrow morning, so I'm a little bit like a child before Christmas morning - I'm dead excited.
"She is the best horse in the world. She proved to everybody how good she was (in the Arc). I was delighted with her.
"If you look down the runners - there were horses like Intello, Orfevre, Al Kazeem, they were all in the field and she just annihilated them.
"I rode her a couple of weeks ago and I forgot how good she was. I walked around with a smile on my face for three weeks. It's amazing what a winter does to a filly and she looks magnificent."
If Treve does make a winning return as expected in the Ganay, it appears increasingly likely she will make her first appearance in Britain at Royal Ascot in June.
"If everything goes to plan she'll be back on April 27 and it's all looking good at this stage," Dettori told At The Races.
"Her programme is already pencilled in. It will be the Ganay and if everything goes well, I think Criquette and Sheikh Joaan will decide to take her to England and parade her in the Prince of Wales's (Stakes).
"Then she'll have a summer break and her main aim will be the Arc." ============================================== Toormore on course for Craven
Richard Hannon feels he has Toormore as ready as he can be for the Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday week.
The champion juvenile, owned by Middleham Park Racing, has completed his major homework ahead of his first big test of the season.
Should all go to plan at Newmarket, Toormore will return to the headquarters of British Flat racing for the Qipco 2000 Guineas on May 3.
Hannon said: "Toormore had a spin on at Kempton last Monday and needs a prep. It makes more sense to go to the course he will be running on in the Guineas.
"He'll carry a big penalty, but he'll need to win the Craven with a penalty to run in the Guineas. Anjaal (fourth in the Dewhurst) also goes for the Craven."
Toormore was unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile and signed off with a comprehensive success in the Group One National Stakes at the Curragh last September.
He is not the only leading Classic hope for the Hannon operation, with the well-regarded Night Of Thunder also holding an unblemished record and set to contest what looks like being a red-hot Aon Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Saturday, where Kingman and Berkshire also feature.
Hannon said: "Night Of Thunder goes for the Greenham. He likes soft ground and will go well."
================================================ Lantern set to bypass Lockinge
Sky Lantern is likely to swerve the JLT Lockinge Stakes and start her four-year-old campaign in the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The multiple Group One-winning filly claimed the Qipco 1000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and King of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes during a magnificent 2013, although it ended on something of a downbeat note when she was last of 14 in Hong Kong in December, being eased when her chance had gone.
Trainer Richard Hannon said: "Sky Lantern is in good form and cantering away. She's in the Lockinge, but we'll probably give that a miss and go straight for the Windsor Forest."
The daughter of Red Clubs also struck Group One gold in her juvenile year, winning the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
================================================== Tuesday decision on Rizeena prep
A workout at Newmarket on Tuesday morning will determine whether Rizeena takes her chance in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
Although trainer Clive Brittain would be unruffled by the filly running in the Qipco 1000 Guineas without the aid of a prep, a gameplan will not be formulated until after she is put through her paces at home.
Brittain said: "She'll work (on Tuesday) and that will tell us if she needs a run or not. We've got the Fred Darling (Dubai Duty Free) as an option, but, at the same time, we wouldn't be bothered if she didn't have a prep before the Guineas if her work goes well."
He added: "The ground should be OK for her at the weekend."
Rizeena is as low as 6-1 for the Guineas after a highly accomplished juvenile campaign yielded a Group One triumph in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh and a clutch of superb efforts in defeat.
Twenty-five horses have been confirmed for the Group Three over seven furlongs, including the likes of Joyeuse, Sandiva, Queen Catrine and Al Thakhira.
Euro Charline, Iveagh Gardens and Nirva have already won this year and are also in contention, while Cape Factor, Coral Mist and Dutch Courage would bring good form to the table.
================================================= Kingman tops Greenham contenders
Kingman, a leading contender for the Qipco 2000 Guineas, is one of 20 possible runners in what could be an epic renewal of the Aon Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
The unbeaten John Gosden-trained colt looked the real deal in two starts as a juvenile and will use this Group Three over seven furlongs as a first staging post before the Newmarket Classic on May 3.
Frankel, who carried the same Khalid Abdullah silks, won the Greenham in 2011 before his astonishing Guineas success.
Kingman's presence has hardly scared away the opposition, though, with alleged big-hitters like Berkshire, Night Of Thunder, Be Ready and Lat Hawill still in the frame.
Fiscal Focus has been confirmed by Jim Bolger, with compatriot Paul Deegan having left in Prince Of All and Shining Emerald. Fellow Irish handler David Wachman could saddle Hidden Oasis.
Anjaal, Astaire, Patentar, Windfast, Parbold and Saayerr add extra spice to a warm-looking Classic trial.

Newbury update Newbury hosts the Dubai Duty Free Stakes and Aon Greenham Stakes on Saturday. An update on the going from the racecourse (@racesnewbury) said: "Going: soft, good to soft in places after 4.8mm in last 24 hours." =========================================== RICHARD FAHEY has won three of the last five runnings of this £20,000 contest and is represented by Romantic Settings and Las Verglas Star, who is contesting this for the third successive year.
Las Verglas Star missed the break and was tailed off two years ago, but got closer last season when third to stablemate Lady Loch.
Paul Hanagan rode the winner last year and today takes over on Las Verglas Star, who races off a 4lb lower mark than last season.
Easy Terms finished fourth in the race last year and her trainer Edwin Tuer said: "She was fourth in this last year and, although she might be better over a mile and a half, she's in fine fettle at home, where we're ahead of ourselves following the mild winter. I'm expecting a big run."
Chief among the dangers is the Mick Channon-trained Amralah, who drops in class after finishing down the field in the Group 3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket in October.
Today's pointer Tom Eaves has a 40 per cent strike-rate for Keith Dalgleish at Southwell (12 wins from 30 rides, +£51.75 to £1 stakes), including three wins from five rides on two-year-olds. He takes the mount on Ko Cache at 2.00. ================================================= Good start Sir Michael Stoute has kicked off the new turf season in good form. Since March 31, his runners have finished: 143114417. He runs Arbaab and Munaaser (2.40 Pontefract) today. ===========================================

Knock may have hindered Tea chance
Rebecca Curtis believes Teaforthree may have suffered a knock in the early stages of Saturday's Crabbie's Grand National after the leading contender returned sore following his exit from the race.
Having finished third in the 2013 renewal of the Aintree marathon, Teaforthree was sent off joint-favourite last weekend but blundered and unseated jockey Nick Scholfield at The Chair with a circuit to run.
Scholfield revealed afterwards his mount was not travelling with the same zest as he had done 12 months earlier and Curtis feels her star chaser may have hurt himself even before he eventually parted company with his rider.
Curtis said: "He was a bit sore after the race. I think he whacked his back legs early on, probably even before he fell.
"That's the National for you, but he's absolutely fine now, we'll give him his summer holidays and hopefully he'll back to have another go next year.
"It's too early to say what the plan will be for next season. We'll plan a route back to Aintree nearer the time."
Teaforthree's stable companion At Fishers Cross was also a beaten favourite on National day, going down by a length to Whisper in the Grade One Silver Cross Stayers' Hurdle.
While it was a creditable effort, the seven-year-old pulled off a shoe and Curtis feels it was detrimental to his chances.
"He came back good, although his foot was a little bit sore where he tore off the shoe," she said.
"He tore it off with a circuit to run and he couldn't get it off, so he was standing on it for the second circuit, which is probably why he was jumping a bit right.
"It's possible he could run at Punchestown. We haven't made a decision yet and we'll just see how he is in the next week or so."
================================================ Big Shu up for another Cup bid
Peter Maher is eyeing Punchestown Festival compensation for Big Shu after his stable star's early exit from the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.
The nine-year-old clinched Punchestown's La Touche Cup last April, following up his victory in the Glenfarclas Cross-Country Chase at Cheltenham Festival.
Having finished a good third when defending his Cheltenham crown, Big Shu was strongly fancied by some for the world's most famous steeplechase, but he only made it as far as the third fence before falling under Peter Buchanan.
Maher is looking forward to seeing his charge run in the La Touche Cup again and is already thinking of a return to Merseyside in a year's time.
The trainer said: "It was disappointing, but that's the National. If it was easy it wouldn't be worth a £1million and you wouldn't have 40 lunatics galloping down to the first!
"A horse fell in front of Big Shu at the second and going down to the third the loose horse backed off it, our horse's head was right up his backside and he didn't even see the fence. It was just one of those things.
"He came back in one piece, which is the main thing, and he is a National horse, I'm still sure of that.
"We had the back man look at him when he got home as he's always had a back problem and unbelievably, whatever he did when he came down at Aintree has put the back problem right.
"He didn't go half a mile on Saturday, so I would imagine he'll go to Punchestown now for the La Touche Cup.
"There are plenty of races there he could run in, but I'm a cross-country man through and through and I think that's where he'll go."
Maher plans to send his charge down the cross-country route again next season before a return trip to Aintree and is keen on a rematch with this year's Cheltenham Festival winner and National runner-up Balthazar King.
Maher said: "He's still only a baby really, so hopefully he'll be back there (Aintree) next year and he'll go down the same route.
"We'll stick to the cross-country races, he has a date with Balthazar King lined up and we'll find out who is the best.
"I'd be fairly hopeful we could maybe beat him at Cheltenham, but we'll see."

Naas repeat plan for Maarek
Maarek will aim for back-to-back victories in the Woodlands Stakes at Naas in three weeks' time before running at the Dante meeting at York in May.
Trainer Evanna McCutcheon felt the ground was to blame for his disappointing seasonal debut on Saturday, when seventh of 10 runners in a six-furlong Listed race at Cork.
The Prix de l'Abbaye winner will now take in the Listed sprint at Naas on April 28 before he is sent to Britian to contest the Duke of York Stakes, in which Maarek finished fifth to Society Rock last season, on May 14.
McCutcheon said: "He needed the run, that is for sure. It was always going to be stiff ask at Cork on that holding ground and with that penalty, but he's come out of it grand.
"We'll go to Naas now and York is still very much the plan."
================================================ Toast supplemented for Epsom
Runaway UAE Derby winner Toast Of New York has been supplemented for the Investec Derby at a cost of £8,000 with a potential run in the Kentucky Derby having been ruled out.
The American-bred three-year-old was taking a huge step up in class at Meydan following a couple of admittedly impressive victories at Wolverhampton, but he justified trainer Jamie Osborne's faith with a scintillating display.
Having won on the Wolverhampton Polytrack and the Tapeta in Dubai, a switch to dirt for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3 was a possibility, but connections have decided to keep the exciting colt at home for the time being and a trip to Epsom in June is now under serious consideration.
Osborne said: "The Kentucky Derby is definitely out and this morning we have supplemented him for the Derby at Epsom.
"There is nothing wrong with the horse, we are very satisfied with how he came back from Dubai. We just felt piling him on a plane again so soon to take him to another continent and tackle another different surface would be a lot to ask.
"To put him in the Epsom Derby at this stage costs £8,000 and to add him at the next stage would be £75,000. It is by no means a certain plan he will run there, but it makes sense to keep our options open."
If Toast Of New York is to line up at Epsom on June 7, it seems unlikely he will make a racecourse appearance between now and then.
His trainer said: "Fitness-wise he doesn't need a prep run. Experience-wise it could be a help, but a race like the Dante Stakes (at York) is only three weeks before Epsom and could you leave your Derby at the Dante?
"If he does go to Epsom I'm pretty sure he'll go straight there."
The one race that is firmly on the youngster's agenda is the 2015 Dubai World Cup.
"We hope he is a horse with a great future and longer term his aim has to be next year's Dubai World Cup," said Osborne.
"I think that can be carved in stone and it is just a case of thinking about what route we take between now and next March."
============================================ traight to Guineas for Rizeena
Rizeena will bypass this weekend's Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury and head straight for the Qipco 1000 Guineas after delighting trainer Clive Brittain in a workout on Tuesday morning.
The daughter of Iffraaj is among the market principals for the Newmarket Classic on May 4 having struck four times as a juvenile, registering victories in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
She has not run since being narrowly held by the ill-fated Chriselliam in the Fillies' Mile at the end of September, but after a strong exercise this morning, Brittain is confident she does not need a prep race for her Classic bid.
He said: "She worked really well and, after that, we've decided we're going to take her straight to the Guineas.
"If we thought she was a bit ring-rusty, we would have considered the race on Saturday, but I don't think she needs it.
"She did an absolutely sweet piece of work - she couldn't have done it any easier, so I couldn't be happier with her at this stage. I don't think she needs a race or a racecourse gallop.
"We'll just keep her sweet and sharp and the next time she goes for a gallop she'll be galloping for money in the Guineas."

Ascot will stage the richest mile handicap in Europe with the addition of the Balmoral Handicap to the QIPCO British Champions Day card on October 18. QIPCO British Champions Day: Boosted by big handicap The race, worth £250,000, will have a maximum field of 30 and will only be open to horses that have finished in the first six in 18 nominated qualifier races that take place throughout the season. Those qualifiers include the likes of the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket, three events at Royal Ascot and the Betfair International at Ascot. There is at least one qualifying race staged at each of the Qipco British Champions Series' participant racecourses. Charles Barnett, chief executive at Ascot, said: "Her Majesty The Queen has graciously consented to the name Balmoral Handicap being re-introduced for the new race on Qipco British Champions Day. "The last time the race title was used was at Royal Ascot 2003, when it was a five-furlong handicap, which was replaced to make way for the then new Group Two Windsor Forest Stakes. "It has very much been on our mind to bring back this name when an appropriate opportunity such as this arose."

David Allan, the rider of CARRAGOLD, unplaced, reported that the gelding was never travelling.
08/04/2014 ========================================== 8 April - MERSEYSIDE MAGIC While Phil Smith holds court on the Grand National in his Head of Handicapping blog the remainder of our NH team underline how there’s much more to Aintree than the showpiece alone. This week’s bulletin gives an in-depth update on all the best action from the Merseyside venue and just what effect it’s had on the crowning of the season’s champions.
One holds on
The feature race on Thursday’s card at Aintree was the Grade 1 Doom Bar Aintree Hurdle run over 2m4f, writes Chris Nash.
It looked an ideal opportunity for The New One to gain some compensation for his unlucky run in the Champion Hurdle. He was sent off the 4/9-favourite and although he ultimately secured the prize he did so in somewhat unimpressive fashion.
The race looked to be run at an even gallop until Rock On Ruby led and quickened it exiting the back straight. On turning in he had got himself a clear lead of around four lengths but The New One closed him down to be within three quarters of a length at the second last and then a good two lengths up at the last before making harder work of things than had looked likely for whatever reason.
Putting figures on the race wasn’t straightforward. The winner arrived with a mark of 167, Rock On Ruby was 163 returning to hurdling and Diakali had run a career-best 159 in the County Hurdle last time.
I decided to level the race through Rock On Ruby’s rating, who had been as high as 170 in the past but had shown his very best form at 2m. This had The New One running to 164 – though I added a “+” sign to this effort as to my eyes he could have won by further. It is possible that he idles slightly in front, that he wants a truer gallop, that he is better at 2m or that his effort at Cheltenham left him slightly below his very best here, and I saw no reason to change his rating from 167.
Diakali ran another personal best in finishing just a nose behind Rock On Ruby and this looked a mighty run given he’d raced freely early and, in trying to come from last, had made up ground in the heat of the race. I will be liaising with my Irish colleagues to suggest a mark of 163 for him in the future. This assessment of the race has the fourth-placed Ptit Zig running to 154, which fits in closely with several of his other efforts this season.
Shout it quietly
Second-season hurdler Whisper has proved a revelation in 2013/14 and is now one of the best staying hurdlers around, writes Martin Greenwood.
Seemingly exposed at around 140 as a novice and on his first two runs of this season, Whisper has done nothing but improve since and has won three of his last four starts, namely handicaps at Newbury (off 140) and Cheltenham (Coral Cup, off 153) and The Silver Cross Stayers’ Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree last Saturday on his first attempt at 3m. His only defeat in this period was a close second off 147 to another of this season’s vast improvers Saphir du Rheu in the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las in February.
With the absence of World Hurdle winner More of That, and the slight regression in Zarkandar’s ability, Whisper, stamina issues apart, had only one serious opponent to reckon with in the shape of World Hurdle third At Fishers Cross, who probably hasn’t gone on in the manner expected of him after a successful novice season. In the event, there was never any doubt in Whisper’s ability to see out the trip, under these relatively quick conditions at least, and he never looked like being caught after taking over the lead from At Fishers Cross at the last, if anything idling a little in front. With the runner-up (162) and third-placed Thousand Stars (158), an Aintree regular, seemingly running to the pound, I have no hesitation promoting Whisper to 164, with the promise of more to come.
The Henderson/Geraghty combination also scored in my other graded race at Aintree with Beat That spread-eagling the field in the Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle on the Friday. There didn’t appear to be a great strength in depth despite the large field, and with Seeyouatmidnight (possibly unsuited by the track, and possibly amiss after stopping relatively quickly) a major disappointment after the significant promise he had showed when winning at Musselburgh and Haydock, Beat That only had to reel in long-time leader Cole Harden (career best effort over this longer trip, now 150) to score in pretty ready style.
Beat That was having only his third race over hurdles, and his first since finishing second to Killala Quay over 2m4f at Sandown in December. Killala Quay was beaten a long way this time for Beat That and the runner-up finished 25 lengths plus clear of the rest. Beat That relished the longer trip, cruising for the most part and value for more than the four-length winning margin.
My standards suggest somewhere in the mid-150s for Beat That, and his new mark is 156, which makes him the best staying novice in the UK at the minute. Probably only the Willie Mullins-trained pair Faugheen and Briar Hill could challenge his position come the end of the season, and with those two likely to run at Punchestown it makes for an interesting contest. Whatever the fate of that pair, there is no doubting the potential of Beat That, who looks likely to play a prominent role in his future races, whether it be over hurdles or fences.
Cheltenham champions strengthen their positions
Cheltenham form stood the test in the Grade 2 International Festival for Business 2014 Top Novices’ Hurdle on Friday, writes David Dickinson.
Josses Hill and Sgt Reckless, second and fourth to Vautour in the Supreme, locked horns again with the length and a half between them at Cheltenham extending to six lengths on this sharper track. I have raised Josses Hill to 150 and left Sgt Reckless on his Cheltenham mark of 146.
King of the Picts finished strongly over this 2m, giving further credence, as if any were needed, to the race in which he’d chased Vautour and The Tullow Tank home over 2m2f at Leopardstown in February. That remains the pivotal piece of novice hurdle form in the speed division.
The Grade 1 Injured Jockeys Fund 50th Anniversary 4-year-old Hurdle went the way of the admirable Guitar Pete, who rallied strongly from an unpromising position to snatch the spoils late in the day. He had finished in front of Calipto when third in the Triumph but was not generally expected to confirm the form given that horse’s ill fortune at Prestbury. In a race that is not easy to get a level on I have raised Guitar Pete by 2lb to 146.
One fascinating situation with the juveniles is that the weight for age scale assumes improvement in the four-year-olds for a little while longer yet. Such a scale can only ever be an average. A look at the performance figures we have for Guitar Pete suggests strongly that his improvement is exceeding that which the scale expects. His figures from his first win at Listowel through to Aintree are 129, 132, 137, 139, 140, 142, 144 and 146. Such figures reflect great credit on the team that have seen him run his race time and time again.
Does this extra improvement seem likely for a horse that ran six times on the Flat before going hurdling? Well, yes it does actually. His racecourse career began in a 1m maiden at Navan less than 11 months ago. So for a Flat horse he would be regarded as a late maturer.
Of course the irony of the whole thing is that Tiger Roll, who he beat at Leopardstown in February, seemingly improved past him to win the Triumph at Cheltenham. So is that also credible? Again, yes it is. Tiger Roll has had no Flat career, so Leopardstown and Cheltenham were the second and third racecourse appearances of his life. For Guitar Pete those same two races were racecourse appearances numbers 12 and 13. This should serve as a reminder that weight for age scales just deal with the average.
Qualified Succes
Balder Succes put up the best two-mile novice performance of the season in Saturday's Grade 1 Doom Bar Novices' Chase at Aintree, writes John de Moraville.
Alan King's decision to bypass Cheltenham paid handsome dividends as the slick-jumping six-year-old (upped 9lb to 162) powered clear of another notable improver, Simply Ned (157), with Arkle third Trifolium (156) filling the same position again.
Balder Succes's victory compares favourably with two of the past three Maghull winners, Special Tiara (157) a year ago and Finian's Rainbow (157) in 2011. None are in the same league as 2012 winner Sprinter Sacre (169 at that stage of his career), though Finian's Rainbow still landed a Queen Mother Champion Chase himself and Balder Succes looks just the type to develop into a leading candidate for that next March.
Whereas Simply Ned notched a career-best in second, Trifolium, fourth-placed Moscow Mannon (146) and front-running Next Sensation (146) in fifth ran virtually to their pre-race ratings.
With last year's first four – Sprinter Sacre, Cue Card, Flemenstar and Finian's Rainbow – all hors de combat, Friday's Betfred Melling Chase took a lot less winning than usual.
That, though, won't have bothered Willie Mullins, who skilfully steered Boston Bob (161) back from a couple confidence-cracking falls to notch his second Grade 1 chase success.
Runner-up Rolling Aces was back to his best on 156 with Ballynagour, upped in class, repeating the 155 he achieved when spread-eagling his Byrne Group Plate Handicap rivals at Cheltenham.

Ascot aim for Panther
Michael Owen expects Brown Panther to take in a warm-up race this spring before being given a chance in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.
Last summer's Goodwood Cup winner was most recently seen in November's Melbourne Cup, where he showed up prominently before fading to finish eighth and picked up an injury.
The footballer-turned pundit bred the six-year-old and owns him jointly with Andrew Black.
Speaking in his role as a British Champions Series ambassador, Owen said: "We were going to go on to Hong Kong and then Dubai, but he got struck into in Australia.
"He's fine, perfect now and the Ascot Gold Cup is the main aim for the early part of the year.
"There are races at Ascot (Sagaro Stakes), Sandown (Henry II) and York (Yorkshire Cup) as potential stepping stones, but the first main aim is the Ascot Gold Cup."
==================================== Treve work has Dettori 'excited'
Harry Herbert reported Frankie Dettori to be "seriously excited" after partnering brilliant filly Treve in a workout at Chantilly on Tuesday morning.
Criquette Head-Maarek's unbeaten stable star was a scintillating winner of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October and is due to return to Paris for her eagerly-anticipated four-year-old debut in the Prix Ganay on April 27.
Dettori, who missed the Arc through injury, travelled to Head-Maarek's base to put the finishing touches to Treve this morning and Herbert, racing manager to owner Shiekh Joaan Al Thani, is thrilled with the progress the filly has made.
Herbert said: "She worked this morning and although I wasn't there to see it myself as I'm in Newmarket , everyone I've spoken to was absolutely delighted.
"Frankie was seriously excited and everyone is confident she has progressed very well through the winter.
"She is a much stronger and deeper filly now and seems in very good form at the moment, so let's hope things stay that way."
========================================== 'Gorgeous' Rock signs off
Relic Rock, narrow runner-up in the Grade Two bumper at Aintree on Saturday, will not run again this season.
Lincolnshire trainer Steve Gollings will instead keep the six-year-old gelding on ice until the autumn, when he will embark upon a novice hurdling campaign.
Relic Rock only succumbed by a head to Ballybolley on Merseyside, with connections already excited about the possibility of one day sending him over fences.
Gollings said: "He's a gorgeous horse. A furlong down I thought he'd go away from them, but it was still a good run.
"There's no side to him - he's such an easy horse to train - but we'll put him away now.
"He should make into a smart hurdler, but I reckon he'll be an even better chaser."
======================================= Walsh aiming for Punchestown return
Ruby Walsh expects to be back riding in time for the Punchestown Festival later this month after receiving a positive update from his specialist on Monday.
Walsh dislocated his shoulder and fractured the top of his humerus after suffering a bad fall from Abbyssial in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and it looked certain he would miss the rest of the campaign.
However, he attended the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry on Monday and with his injuries healing faster than expected, Walsh is confident he will be back in the saddle for the opening day of Punchestown on Tuesday, April 29.
Jennifer Walsh, the rider's sister and agent said: "The specialist was happy when he went to see him on Monday and hopefully he'll be back for Punchestown.
"We haven't made any definite plans regarding when he'll be back, but hopefully he'll be back riding out in a fortnight and we'll go from there."
It is no surprise Walsh is keen to get back for Ireland's showpiece National Hunt Festival given his possible rides could include the likes of Vautour, Faugheen, Quevega, Hurricane Fly and Champagne Fever.
He told the Irish Examiner: "I'd imagine I will be riding at Punchestown. I got on very well (at Santry) and am making great progress. My humerus is healing well and the shoulder is very stable. If I keep progressing, I would expect to be sitting on a horse in two weeks' time.
"The plan now is to continue with physio and gym work. I had an hour and a half of physio and conditioning today.
"I can safely say that if I had ridden 10 lots in the morning, I would not have been blowing as hard or felt as bad afterwards."
Walsh revealed he plans to continue riding until the French Champion Hurdle at Auteuil in June, after which an operation will then be necessary.
