It's been a while since I've been on here, but have spent the last hour or so listening to Roy Orbison Radio, which highlighted his 1963 UK tour when he replaced Duane Eddy. The opening act was a certain Gerry & the Pacemakers and having heard them in rehearsal, Roy acceded to their plea and let the Beatles close the show - can you imagine paying for just one ticket to watch those three plus other acts!!!!

Having toured twice earlier in the year with Tommy Roe and Chris Montez, respectively, the Beatles were to British fans the top act. It was to be some years later that John Lennon admitted that their first releases had been attempt to write songs a la Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly or the Everley Brothers. This was their first single release that had gained only modest success when released the year before.
