Must dash got to buy some cakes for the party. Now where did I put my money? Puzzle 104 You've been asked to buy the cakes for the school party and you've been given $100 to buy 100 cakes. Donuts cost 56c, chocolate eclairs cost $2.26 and iced buns cost 92c. How can you spend exactly all of the money on the 100 cakes?

15 donuts, 10 chocolate eclairs and 75 iced buns. 15 + 10 + 75 = 100 and 15*0.56 + 10*2.26 + 75*0.92 = 100.00.

Fancy a trip round the world? Puzzle 106 At the equator the radius of the earth is 6,378 km, so its circumference is almost exactly 40,000 km. Imagine we had a long rope which went around the equator, this would of course be 40,000 km long. If we now placed 1 metre sticks vertically all the way around and lay the rope on top of these sticks, i.e. the rope would be 1m higher all the way around, how much extra rope would we require?

If we now placed 1 metre sticks vertically all the way around and lay the rope on top of these sticks, i.e. the rope would be 1m higher all the way around, how much extra rope would we require? Well I managed to find the formulae quite quickly, so here goes: D x 3.14 = C where D = diameter and C = circumference D = 2R So... (2 x 6378) x 3.14 = 40,053.84 Add 1 metre to the radius... (2 x 6379) x 3.14 = 40,060.12 The difference between them is 6.28 metres[/color] BC

6.28 metres, a lot less than you might think! If we call the radius of the Earth (in metres), R. Then the difference between the two circumferences is 2*Pi*(R+1) - 2*Pi*R = 2*Pi metres = 6.28 metres.

All that flying I need a Barley sugar. Puzzle 108 Using the digits 1 to 9, create two numbers which when multiplied together give you the highest number. For example, 12345678 * 9 = 111111102, clearly there are higher products. What is the highest?

Will update later. BC Please don't post answer yet. OK, no problem. The person who sent it to me, sent it with "can you do this in 10 seconds", and he recons he did it in 13 seconds !! It took me a few minutes to get it. Better start taking the Omega 3 tablets I guess.

2 + 3 = 10 7 + 2 = 63 6 + 5 = 66 8 + 4 = 96 9 + 7 = 144
Took me longer than 13 seconds!

2 + 3 = 10 7 + 2 = 63 6 + 5 = 66 8 + 4 = 96 9 + 7 = 144 Took me longer than 13 seconds!
I spent about 10 minutes on it, but there were just too many combinations, so if it is right, it will be more luck than judgement! BC
And this for KP, so you can still have a go... If 2 + 3 = 10 7 + 2 = 63 6 + 5 = 66 8 + 4 = 96 9 + 7 = 144 Then 10 + 5 =

I always seem to be at the petrol station. Puzzle 110 I travelled from London to Glasgow last week at 60 miles per hour, I had filled my petrol tank just before I left, so it was full with 25 gallons. Unfortunately, my petrol tank sprang a leak immediately and I only managed to drive 300 miles before I ran out of petrol. My car does 30 miles per gallon, how fast was I losing petrol through the hole?

Unfortunately, my petrol tank sprang a leak immediately and I only managed to drive 300 miles before I ran out of petrol. My car does 30 miles per gallon, how fast was I losing petrol through the hole? First, how many gallons per hour (gph) should it do? 25g @ 30 mpg = 750 miles 750 miles @ 60 mph = 12.5h 25g / 12.5h = 2 gphSecond, how many gph did it actually use? 300 miles @ 60 mph = 5h 25g / 5h = 5 gphFinally, what's the difference? 5 gph - 2 gph = 3 gallons per hourBC Still spinning

3 gallons per hour. I drove 300 miles at 30 miles per gallon, so I used 10 gallons. Which means I lost the other 15 gallons. I drove the 300 miles at 60mph, which took me 5 hours. So I lost 15 gallons of petrol in 5 hours = 3 gallons per hour.

How much of each would he have if he had 100 tonnes for £100, knowing he needs more chicken feed than pig feed? Through good old trial and error, I got: Chicken feed 10 tonnes @ £5 = £50 Pig feed 2 tonnes @ £3 = £6 Cow feed 88 tonnes @ 0.50p = £44 £50 + £6 + £44 = £100 and 10 tonnes + 2 tonnes + 88 tonnes = 100 tonnes BC

Bit better weather so lets have a game of cricket. Puzzle 113 A cricketer's average in his first 18 innings was 16.5 runs. After a further 8 innings, his average had increased to 32.5 runs. What was his average for the last 8 innings?
|
|
|
Post by Kimmy on Mar 14, 2010 11:26:25 GMT
His average was 68.5 runs. After the initial 18 innings, the average was 16.5, giving a total of 18 * 16.5 = 297 runs. There were 26 innings in total, with an average of 32.5 runs. Therefore an overall total of 26 * 32.5 = 845 runs. Therefore 845 - 297 = 548 runs were run in the final 8 innings, giving an average of 548 / 8 = 68.5 runs.

I have got that sinking feeling. Puzzle 114 Many years ago, a cruise liner sank in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The survivors luckily landed on a remote desert island. There was enough food for the 135 people to last four weeks. Nine days later a rescue ship appeared, unluckily this ship also sank, leaving an additional 36 people stranded on the island to now share the original rationed food. The food obviously had to be re-rationed, everyone was now on three-quarters of the original ration, so how many days in total would the food last for, from the day of the original sinking?

The food obviously had to be re-rationed, everyone was now on three-quarters of the original ration, so how many days in total would the food last for, from the day of the original sinking? What is the total quantity of food available? For ease, 4 units of food per person per day. 135 people x 4 units = 540 units of food per day x 28 days =15,120 units of food
How much is consumed and left after 9 days? 540 units x 9 days = 4,860 eaten leaving 10,260 units
Consumption reduces to 3 units per day and there are now 171 people = 513 units per day. 10,260 units of food remaining / 513 units = 20 days
20 days + the first 9 days = 29 daysBC

29 days: originally there was enough food for 135 people for 28 days, which totals 3780 rations. After 9 days, 1215 rations had been eaten. Therefore there were now 2565 rations left for 171 people, which would last for another 20 days at three-quarter ration per person. Which is 29 days in total from the original sinking.

Puzzle 117 Which is more probable, to throw: at least one six with 6 dice at least two sixes with 12 dice at least three sixes with 18 dice at least four sixes with 24 dice I have no idea where to start with this one. My first impression is that there is an equal chance for all. But if that's wrong, I'll go for at least one six with 6 dice.
Not a good day today... Dunguib lost. Chelsea out of the CL. And finally, baffled by the KP quiz. I'm off to bed. BC
