15:50 Saturday 20th September Racing Tips - 20/09/2014
Ayr Gold Cup pace as follows: 2p, 6, 9, 10p, 23, 25p with those little p's meaning prominent. There are 3 main bits of pace drawn across the track and an obvious advantage is hard to see, though preference this week has clearly been for high. The shortlisted 4 at the prices are Duke Of Firenze, Barnet Fair, Go Far and Highland Acclaim but 2 of those are badly drawn in the middle. I really like Barnet Fair who was held up the worng side last time but who has Cam Hardie back on and his trainer has a superb record in this. He's improved on each start this year for his new yard and looks well worth another go at 6 furlongs at 28/1 out of a just high enough stall 17. Highand Acclaim is very much 2nd choice but it's a race I'm not all that confident about in truth. Ayr 15.50 - Barnet Fair 1pt e/w
Not really one for shorties and Hillstar hardly has an appealing profile but I'm a bit surprised he's not favourite today and really fancy he'll win this at 3/1. Ryan Moore got a little caught out last time but he'll very likely make amends today and this trip on softish ground should be ideal. He has won on soft before and, whilst I can see the appeal of Tasaday, I think Hillstar is a better horse and is only being asked to give her 3lb. Glorious Protector is a lovely horse but I think he'll want more of a test than looks likley here. Newbury 13.50 - Hillstar 2pt win
Silver Cup pace as follows: 6, 14, 16, 19, 21 23p, 24, 25. Huntsmans Close is the bet I'm most looking forward to today. Perfectly drawn, he'll hopefully not get too far back as he likes to be in the mix. He has a win in him off this mark and James Doyle, who gets on well with him, is back on. I've had a good go at 11/1. I also like Lexington Abbey at the same price, whose trainer said after his 2nd at York he'd make an Ayr Gold Cup horse, and he too has a superb draw. Pat Smullen booked is a big plus given how he's riding and 3 year olds have a good record in the race. He's bumped into a few good ones of late but is still improving and probably wasn't ideally positioned last time in the centre of the track. A strong pace up the rail will suit. Ayr 14.40 - Huntsmans Close 1pt e/w Ayr 14.40 - Lexington Abbey 1pt e/w
Back at Newbury, I was quite keen on Arab Dawn until the rain came. That is not to say that he will not like the ground, more that it has dramatically enhances the chances of Roseburg, who disappointed last time but had excuses. Keen off a stop/ start gallop on quick ground at Goodwood, he'll get a better pace to aim at today and will relish conditions. Andrea Atzeni, who knows him best, is back on too and he's a nice proposition at 13/2. Newbury 14.55 - Roseburg 1pt e/w
I really like the chances of Sennockian Star today back at a tack he's won at before. He is Listed class and 2nd best in the field on ratings behind Sky Hunter. Whilst likeable, that runner looks best with cut in the ground and he's in a first time hood having been off for 4 months. Sennockian Star doesn't get a mile and a half but this is ideal and thank goodness Mirsaale is in the field as he'll give the selection a tow into this. He may be a Johnston horse but I think he's best coming form just in behind and looks a lovely bet at 10/3. Ayr 15.15 - Sennockian Star 2pt win

OUTRAGE spread through the racing industry last night in response to a Daily Mirror front page showing a horrifying image of the moment Wigmore Hall was put down at Doncaster last week.
The image was accompanied by the headline "Shot in the head... a tragic end for a £1.3m champion".
The images of the incident, which took place last Saturday, were provided by campaign group Animal Aid and are certain to shock, with the online version of the story containing a series of images of the horse dying to accompany a 1,219 word piece by Nick Sommerlad. The BHA reacted swiftly when contacted by the Mirror and plan to meet with the paper's editor next week.
Many in racing used social media to question the group's decision to supply the photographs, and the Mirror's use of them.
Trainer Charlie Fellowes (@fellowesracing) tweeted: "Disappointing reflection on racing industry by @dailymirror. Come to @nktopenday & see how amazingly looked after these horses are."
Hugo Palmer (@hugopalmeracing) said: "It takes a very sick person to take pictures of a horse being put down. Even worse to print them. These people are scum and care nothing for horses, their welfare or those who dedicate their lives to their care. The Mirror and those who buy it should be ashamed."
In a statement given to the Mirror, the BHA said: "The highest standards of horse welfare are demanded of all jockeys, trainers and racecourses. British racing's welfare standards far exceed existing animal welfare legislation. Over the last 15 years, the equine fatality rate in British racing has fallen by a third. Horses are at risk of injury throughout their lives, regardless of the type of equestrian activity they participate in."
The BHA's chief veterinary officer Jenny Hall is also quoted. She said: "The sad incident involving Wigmore Hall was the only fatality at Doncaster's Flat racing course this year from 1,563 runners. The first priority in British Racing is always the welfare of its competitors, both human and equine.
"The team of veterinary surgeons were at Wigmore Hall's side in moments after the injury. The vets were able to make an immediate assessment of the Wigmore Hall's condition. In this case the diagnosis was made that the injury was untreatable and so the correct course of action for Wigmore Hall's welfare was for him to be humanely put down."
Wigmore Hall's trainer Michael Bell was also quoted. Speaking earlier this week he said: "He will leave a huge hole. We'd had him since he was a yearling and he has given everybody involved with him an enormous amount of fun. It is very tough for all concerned. I have spoken to the owner and he was obviously very upset."
The opinion of Dr Peter Webbon, the former chief executive of the Animal Health Trust, is also used in a yes/no debate. He said: "Racing has a horse welfare record to be proud of and is among the best-regulated animal activities. Racehorses are the best looked after 2% of horses in the country. The sport employs 6,000 people to care for 14,000 horses, providing a quality of life virtually unsurpassed by any other domesticated animal.
"In exchange, racing asks them to do what they are bred to do - race. British Racing is open and transparent about the inherent risk of injury involved, which is 0.2% of runners - a drop of around a third in the last 15 years. Horses are at risk of serious injury throughout their lives, even when turned out in a field. If racing stopped it would be catastrophic for the thoroughbred as a breed as well as for the rural economy."

TONY MCCOY was involved in an astonishing, ugly scene after finishing second on last-race favourite Saint Helena at Worcester on Friday evening.
A racegoer leapt on one of the benches alongside the grandstand rail near the winning post and heaped abuse on McCoy as he returned on pulling up after the 2m novice handicap hurdle.
"I had a beer can thrown at me," reported McCoy, who had ridden a four-timer before being beaten on 7-4 favourite Saint Helena, the Jim Best-trained horse who is the subject of a BHA investigation in the wake of winning when well backed at Southwell the time before.
Eyewitnesses reported the irate racegoer trying to climb the r ail, with McCoy gesturing back at him.
Racecourse security finally intervened and the racegoer was marched away as other racegoers applauded McCoy.
The stewards confirmed there was no inquiry as the racegoer had not trespassed on the track, and that the incident would be dealt with by the racecourse.
McCoy's winners were Petrovic for his boss Jonjo O'Neill, El Namoose and My Direction for John Ferguson, and Marju's Quest for David Dennis.

There's a busy weekend in store for Ryan Moore as he takes eight rides at Newbury this afternoon before an important football game at Newmarket tomorrow, and here you can read the Betfair Ambassador's exclusive thoughts on the two days ahead...
13:20 Newbury - Stoked
Clearly there are any number of dangerous newcomers and potential improvers in here. But my mount, a half-brother to Es Que Love and Hong Kong Vase winner Dominant, shaped very promisingly when fourth on his debut at Newmarket and Ed's 2yos have been going well recently. Obviously has a fair chance, but it is a guessing game with so many unknowns in the race.
13:50 Newbury - Hillstar
It is obviously disappointing that he hasn't got his head in front since winning the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last year but you can't fault his recent efforts. Certainly, finishing runner-up to the likes of Brown Panther, Telescope, Cavalryman and Amralah can in no way be classed as disappointing efforts, and he has pretty much run to form each time. And if he runs to that level again then there is no reason why he shouldn't go close to winning again in conditions that will suit. I'd say Tasaday is the one to beat, though there a few in here with similar chances on official ratings, and Nautilus is the improver. But Hillstar comes here in good form and I think he has a big chance.
14:20 Newbury - Limato (NON-RUNNER)
There are horses in here with solid Group 2 form but I have to fancy my chances on Limato, even if his trainer reports that the colt had to miss the Gimcrack with a bad scope and hasn't had a smooth preparation for this as a result. I knew that he was a very smart one when he won at Kempton on his debut - I was on a very decent one in second and it rode like a very good race - and he has done nothing to prove me wrong in the meantime. And his defeat of Cotai Glory over course and distance last time clearly would have been franked by the runner-up at Doncaster but for his mishap. He looks ready for this step up in class and looks the one to beat, for all that this is a Mill Reef with a fair bit of depth to it with solid horses like Jungle Cat in opposition.
14:55 Newbury - Queensberry Rules (NON-RUNNER)
Finally came good in first-time cheekpieces at York last time, at last repaying the faith that William had in him. The problem is that he is 6lb higher here from stall 15, and you want to see him put together back-to-back performances, and whether the cheekpieces have the same effect. But you would have to be hopeful, even if this looks a lot stronger race than the York contest and there are plenty of dangers, as you would expect in a 75k handicap, possibly chief among them Air Pilot, Arab Dawn and Roseburg.
15:30 Newbury - Take Cover
Mecca's Angel was very impressive at Doncaster and is probably the one to beat, but there are a few in here that will give him a race, and Take Cover is one of those. Although he may have been a little disappointing in the Nunthorpe last time, he was only beaten two lengths in that Group 1 contest, and this represents a step down in class. But the 5lb penalty he carries for his earlier Group 2 King George Stakes win at Goodwood makes life tough for him; it is always difficult for sprinters to carry these penalties.
16:05 Newbury - L'Etacq
You can give a chance to all of these in here, but arguably my mount is one of the less likely winners after a moderate run on his first attempt at this trip at Salisbury last time, especially as the handicapper has left him on the same mark. Has a chance on his earlier efforts but has his stamina to prove.
16:40 Newbury - Coorg
Like all of ours, he will come on a lot for the run and has more of a middle-distance pedigree, so I very much doubt whether he will be sharp enough to be winning this over 7f. But he has been going nicely enough at home, without being asked to do too much, so we will see.
17:15 Newbury - Zeshov (NON-RUNNER)
Clearly hasn't gone on from his 7f Sandown maiden win last season, and he hasn't beaten a horse in his two starts over 1m in soft ground this year. And he didn't given me a great feel at Newmarket last time. But he has come down 6lb in the weights as a result, a return to better ground will suit him and a first-time visor could help too, as might the step back down to 7f. So there are positives, even if this is the most competitive task he has faced this season. You'd be more hopeful than confident, though.
Tomorrow
I'm not riding on Sunday as it is the Betfair Newmarket Open Day, with stables opening in the morning from 9:30am and some of the top horses cantering up Warren Hill from 9am. In the afternoon I will be playing football against a trainers' side, who we thrashed last year, so hopefully it will be more of the same!

James Doyle lit up Ayr with a glorious 769-1 treble capped with an emphatic victory in the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup on Louis The Pious.
Results throughout the three-day fixture had shown a definite bias on the stands-side rail in sprint races and Doyle was the one to benefit in both the Gold and Silver Cups.
The young rider was out on luck on Abseil, his only mount on the card for his main retainer Khalid Abdullah, but demonstrated his ability with a cracking trio of victories.
In Louis The Pious he had the perfect partner in the feature Ayr Gold Cup. Second in this race 12 months ago and a winner at Royal Ascot this summer, the David O'Meara-trained six-year-old went one better in some style.
Doyle bided his time on the heels of the leaders in the early stages as Racy and An Saighdiur took the big field along before grabbing the favoured rail to lead inside the final furlong and putting the race to bed within a matter of strides.
The 10-1 shot routed the opposition by two and three-quarter lengths, with Minalisa (33-1) running a tremendous race on the far side to finish second. Back on the near side, Blaine (7-1 favourite) was a head away in third, with Heaven's Guest (12-1) fourth.
Doyle said: "It was a golden highway up that rail, but I can't take any credit. David and his team have done a fantastic job with this lad. In the end, I've probably won by a bit too far.
"These races are pretty valuable and it's an important part of the season to win a few of these. It's a dream come true."
O'Meara, who had his first Group One winner two weeks ago with G Force in the Betfred Sprint Cup, said: "He was drawn well again this year and he is a good horse.
"We put the visor on him because Fran Berry rode him the last day at Ascot and thought it might just help him a little bit, and he was right.
"He's a horse with a lot of ability. Sometimes he can run an indifferent kind of race but on his day he's very good, as we saw at Royal Ascot. These big-field handicaps bring the best out of him."
Louis The Pious was also continuing a fantastic season for his owner Frank Gillespie, whose colours were carried to glory on last week's Irish Champion Stakes winner The Grey Gatsby.
O'Meara put the seal on another fine afternoon when the Danny Tudhope-ridden Earth Drummer easily justified 7-2 favouritism in the Microtech Support Handicap.
Doyle earlier brought Huntsmans Close (9-1) down the stands side to run out a clear-cut winner of the William Hill Ayr Silver Cup, and his s pree began on Power Play (6-1), who forced the issue close home to land the QTS Nursery Handicap.
Karl Burke and owners, the Ontoawinner syndicate, won the Mill Reef at Newbury with Toocoolforschool and were also on the mark when Ticking Katie (10-1) delivered the goods in the William Hill Ayrshire Handicap.

Toocoolforschool led from pillar to post to easily win the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury.
The Acomb Stakes runner-up, trained in North Yorkshire by Karl Burke, turned in a really sharp display in this Group Two over six furlongs to account for an admittedly depleted field by upwards of seven lengths.
Even accounting for two non-runners, including likely favourite Limato, Toocoolforschool has clearly made boundless progression since he finished second in a Listed race at Doncaster last Friday.
Runner-up Growl stayed on with a degree of earnest, but the race was over a long way from home as Silvestre de Sousa's companion absolutely hosed up.
Strath Burn, the 11-8 favourite, missed the break and was always chasing the game, while Jungle Cat appeared ill at ease on the rain-softened ground.
Burke was winning the Mill Reef for a second time after Lord Shanakill obliged in 2008, and s aid: "The ground has played a factor in the winning distance, but we weren't sure he'd even handle it.
"My inclination would be to put him away for the season, although I'll be surprised if the phone doesn't ring with offers from abroad for him. As you know, money talks. There was a bid for him from Hong Kong after the Acomb, but there was a small issue with the vet and it fell through.
"I've always known he has a lot of ability, and also that he was saving a bit for himself, which is why I put cheekpieces on. He's obviously a high-class horse.
"We've done really well with our two-year-old colts - 14 of the 15 we have have already won."

Hillstar (11-4 favourite) ended a frustrating sequence of results to take Newbury's Group Three Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup.
Runner-up on his last four outings, the well-regarded colt finally made no mistake for the Sir Michael Stoute-Ryan Moore axis. Quest For Peace initiated what was a rather soporific gallop under Adam Kirby, with eventual runner-up Tasaday always to the fore.
Hillstar was fourth for much of the journey, and still held that position at the top of the straight. Kirby's partner eventually wilted at the two-furlong pole, at which point Tasaday set sail for home. But Hillstar had other ideas and was bustled towards the front 250 yards from home to score by a length and a half.
Cubanita stayed on late in the piece to take third place, another length and three-quarters away from the winner, with Glorious Protector a slightly disappointing fourth.
Stoute said: "He's done nothing wrong, but things haven't fallen right for him all year. He's very honest and consistent and I was delighted with that. He's a lot more chilled out these days and he might now go for the Canadian International at Woodbine."
Yeenaan put his experience to good use by securing an impressive victory in division one of the Wedgewood Estates EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes.
Marco Botti's youngster (9-2) was one of just four runners in the 14-strong field who had previously competed in a race and travelled smoothly from the outset as Harbour Patrol and Stoked jousted for the lead.
The latter gained an advantage two and a half furlongs from home, but Yeenaan had all bases covered and was soon nudged into an unassailable position by 5lb claimer Daniel Muscutt. S toked, the 100-30 favourite, finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length, while Harbour Patrol was third.
Botti said: "When he ran at Newcastle he was as green as grass and needed the experience.
"Daniel said he didn't mind the ground, which augurs well for him having another run on grass before the end of the season. At the moment we will stick to seven furlongs, but I think he'll get further and be a very nice prospect next year."
Division two of the maiden went to Roger Charlton's McCreery (14-1), with the Tim Jarvis-trained Above The Rest (3-1 co-favourite) on the mark in the Heatherwold Stud Handicap.
The Mick Channon-trained Harlequin Striker (7-1) found the back of the net in the Dubai Duty Free Nursery Handicap, beating Looking Good by a length in the hands of Charles Bishop.

Mecca's Angel maintained her late-season ascension by taking the Dubai International Airport World Trophy at Newbury.
Winner of a good Listed race at Doncaster last week, the three-year-old filly took her game to the next level by pocketing this Group Three sprint over five furlongs.
Jockey Paul Mulrennan stated his intentions quite early on as the partnership went for broke three furlongs out. Justice Day tried really hard, but Mecca's Angel was two and a half lengths too speedy.
Ted Powell's Ajjaadd was a creditable third.
Speaking from Ayr, Dods said: "Paul has given her a great ride. She's picked up and quickened up well."
When asked if connections would consider supplementing her for the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp, Dods said: "We'll see."
However, owner David Metcalfe said: "We are looking after her and you won't see her in the Abbaye this year. It will be next season that we do that."
Mulrennan said: "This has worked out well for me. The ground went on the easy side, which was good news for this filly.
"She did it well and battled on really good. She's a filly with a lot of speed and you might get a Group One out of her."

Huntsmans Close (9-1) bounded down the favoured stands rail to run out a clear-cut winner of the William Hill Ayr Silver Cup.
James Doyle, who also landed the Gold Cup on Louis The Pious and the nursery on Power Play, had Roger Charlton's four-year-old hard on the heels of the pacesetting Bogart and Inxile from stall 27.
Leading a furlong out, Huntsmans Close won by a length from Mehdi, who was drawn 26, with Bogart third from stall 25 to complete a clean sweep for high numbers. Foxtrot Romeo was fourth from stall 18, with Lexington Abbey, drawn 22, fifth.
Doyle said: "The draw simplified things for us. Bogart is quick and I knew he'd be the horse to take me into it.
"I didn't have to do a lot, just wait in behind him.
"Roger had him in great nick and he didn't turn a hair."
Buthelezi (11-4) sent favourite-backers home happy with a game defeat of Thorntoun Care in the Jordan Electrics Ltd Handicap.

Dark Reckoning nipped through on the stands rail to snatch victory in the William Hill Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr.
Graham Lee managed to get Ann Duffield's filly in the clear just in time to force the 25-1 outsider past the line first to take the Group Three spoils by a short head from Parsley.
Ainippe, the Irish-trained 3-1 favourite, was a never-nearer third, two and a quarter lengths away.
Lee said: "I got on to the fence and it was just a case of riding her for luck."
Duffield said: "This filly has done nothing wrong. She's won two races and deserves her rating of 90. I'm glad she's justified our faith from day one and has managed to win a Group Three."
Power Play lived up to his name as he forced the issue close home to land the QTS Nursery Handicap.
The Richard Hannon-trained youngster responded to James Doyle's urgings inside the final furlong to get on top in the dying strides after being initially outpaced when the tempo increased two out.
The 6-1 shot needed every yard of the mile as he nabbed Sir Chauvelin to score by half a length, with Alans Pride just a neck behind in third.

Air Pilot could not have won the Dubai Duty Free Nursery Handicap with any more ease at Newbury.
The 9-2 joint-favourite, trained by Ralph Beckett, held a commanding lead early in the straight and continued to pour it on in the hands of Oisin Murphy.
Three and three-quarters of a length was the winning distance over First Flight, but it could have been far greater had Murphy been in a more unforgiving mood.
Air Pilot was promptly made 8-1 favourite by Paddy Power for the Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket next Saturday.
Beckett said: "The Cambridgeshire is now a possibility, as long as it rains.
"We'll see how we feel on Thursday morning, and there is the question as to whether he will get in.
"I always had this race in the back of my mind for him, but I was mildly surprised to see him travel quite so well as he did as he has been difficult to keep sound."

Sky Hunter (9-4 favourite) bounced back to form when registering an emphatic victory in the William Hill 80th Anniversary Book Launch Doonside Cup at Ayr.
Saeed bin Suroor's four-year-old, who was third in last year's French Derby but failed to fire at Sandown and Newbury back in the spring, c ame out on top after a protracted duel with Sennockian Star.
Mirsaale made the running with Sennockian Star until the latter went on three out, but there was no denying the Godolphin runner, who won by two lengths.
It completed a double for Graham Lee, who was replacing the ill Kieren Fallon and said: "He jumped good and I just tried to keep it simple.
"I was told he lengthens and, on the flip side of that coin, not to get there too soon.
"It should go a long way to restoring this guy's confidence."

Rebel Fitz made a perfect return to the track with a most authoritative victory in the final race of the seven-day Listowel Festival.
The Mick Winters-trained nine-year-old had not been sighted since he recorded a first Grade One success in the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse in April, when a leg injury put paid to a possible tilt at the Galway Plate.
But sent off the 100-30 joint-favourite for the Listowel Races Supporters Club Slan Abhaile, he looked the essence of vitality.
Mikey O'Connor's partner travelled smoothly in mid-division for much of the mile-and-three-quarters journey as Call Me Pj and Little Rocky took the field along.
Rebel Fitz made his move three furlongs from home, and it soon became clear he was going easily the best.
The 2012 Galway Hurdle gave his rivals the slip at the top of the straight and did not have to reach top gear to defeat the staying-on Alton Bay by five lengths.
O'Connor said: "He's an aeroplane, an absolute aeroplane. It's nice to see such a good horse back in such good form."
Winters said: "He had only been swimming and on a treadmill for six weeks. There was genuinely only someone on his back for the last three weeks.
"Mikey O'Connor had a lot of faith in him, but I was very nervous. He's a horse that runs on adrenaline and he's a natural athlete.
"He'll go to Tipperary next if he's 100 per cent. It's the race Captain Cee Bee beat him in last year (Grade Two Friends Of Tipperary Hurdle).
"Sunday morning is going to be a big thing with him.
"I was thinking of the King George (Kempton), but Barry Geraghty says the two-mile race at Leopardstown (Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase).
"I thought he was only peaking this year. It's great for the public that he's back. He has a great following."

Trainer Michael Bell has spoken of his "distress" at the images on the front page of Saturday's Daily Mirror which show his stable star Wigmore Hall being euthanized.
The seven-year-old broke a leg at Doncaster last week and the newspaper obtained images of the gelding being put down.
Bell was full of praise for the treatment Wigmore Hall received on Town Moor and was upset by what he described as an "insensitive" piece.
"It's a very insensitive thing to publish," said Newmarket-based Bell.
"The first thing I picked up on was that the journalist referred to Wigmore Hall as 'it' and that sums up his lack of understanding of the situation.
"The love we have for horses, people who work with them day in and day out, no one ever calls a horse 'it'.
"Those of us who work in the industry love them the most, you only need to go into any yard to see that, they are loved and adored.
"The vets did an astounding job, they were on the scene in 30 seconds and they have to make an instant decision, sometimes it is better for them to deal with it quickly than let the horse suffer. The most important thing is the welfare of the horse.
"Everyone has a mobile phone with a camera on it these days and that appears to be where the photos have come from.
"I just don't see the plus side of printing them, it is very distressing for us. After losing one of our favourites we then have to go through this.
"From my point of view the journalist just shows his lack of understanding of horses throughout the piece."
The British Horseracing Authority defended racing's welfare record after seeing the images.
Jenny Hall, chief veterinary officer for the British Horseracing Authority, said: "The first priority in British racing is always the welfare of its competitors, both human and equine.
"The team of veterinary surgeons were at Wigmore Hall's side in moments after the injury. The vets were able to make an immediate assessment of Wigmore Hall's condition and in this case the diagnosis was made that the injury was untreatable and so the correct course of action for Wigmore Hall's welfare was for him to be humanely put down.
"The highest standards of horse welfare are demanded of all jockeys, trainers and racecourses and none of the 1,450 fixtures held annually in Britain can take place unless key equine welfare criteria have been satisfied. British racing's welfare standards far exceed existing animal welfare legislation.
"Over the last 15 years, the equine fatality rate in British Racing has fallen by one-third, from just over 0.3 per cent to just over 0.2 per cent of runners."
Dr. Peter Webbon, former chief executive of the Animal Health Trust, said: "When it comes to horse welfare, British racing has a track record to be proud of and British racing is among the world's best regulated animal activities.
"The BHA is the Government recognised body responsible for the regulation of horseracing and together with the RSPCA and World Horse Welfare, it is a leading signatory of the National Equine Welfare Protocol.
"Racehorses in Britain are among the healthiest and best looked after two per cent of horses in the country. The sport employs over 6,000 people to provide first-class care and attention for the 14,000 horses in training, providing them with a level of care and a quality of life that is virtually unsurpassed by any other domesticated animal."
Robin Mounsey, media manager for the BHA, said: "We are appalled by the Daily Mirror's decision to publish these photos, and also to contextualise the images in the manner that they have. All that the images show is a veterinary surgeon doing his job and carrying out an act of humanity to prevent an animal from suffering.
"They show the same actions as would be taken by a vet whether the incident was occurring on a racecourse or at home in a field and we do not understand where the public interest lays in publishing these images or why they should be used to open a debate about horse racing.
"We will be seeking a meeting with the editor of the Daily Mirror in regards to this issue and the use of these photos in such a manner. It is typical of Animal Aid to use images such as this to drive their own publicity and agenda, which is not the welfare of thoroughbred horses.
"Animal Aid are not a welfare organisation, nor are they a charity. They campaign for the banning of horse racing, despite the disastrous effect that this would have on the thoroughbred horse as a breed, and the rural economy."

Equine welfare and British Horseracing / 19 Sep 14
Welfare
The British Horseracing Authority and Dr. Peter Webbon, former Chief Executive of the Animal Health Trust, today made the following statements in regards to the high standards of equine welfare within British Horseracing.
Jenny Hall, Chief Veterinary Officer for the British Horseracing Authority, said:
“The sad incident involving Wigmore Hall was the only fatality at Doncaster racecourse’s Flat racing course this year from 1,563 runners.
“The first priority in British Racing is always the welfare of its competitors, both human and equine. The team of Veterinary Surgeons were at Wigmore Hall’s side in moments after the injury. The vets were able to make an immediate assessment of the Wigmore Hall’s condition and in this case the diagnosis was made that the injury was untreatable and so the correct course of action for Wigmore Hall’s welfare was for him to be humanely put down.
“The highest standards of horse welfare are demanded of all jockeys, trainers and racecourses and none of the 1,450 fixtures held annually in Britain can take place unless key equine welfare criteria have been satisfied. British Racing’s welfare standards far exceed existing animal welfare legislation.
“Over the last 15 years, the equine fatality rate in British Racing has fallen by one-third, from just over 0.3% to just over 0.2% of runners. In recent years the average number of runners per year is in excess of 90,000. Horses are at risk of serious injury throughout their lives, regardless of the type of equestrian activity they participate in, even when turned out in a field, exercising at home or doing what they were bred to do, namely racing on the track.”
Dr. Peter Webbon, former Chief Executive of the Animal Health Trust, said:
“When it comes to horse welfare, British Racing has a track record to be proud of and British Racing is among the world’s best regulated animal activities. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is the Government recognised body responsible for the regulation of horseracing and together with the RSPCA and World Horse Welfare, it is a leading signatory of the National Equine Welfare Protocol.
“Racehorses in Britain are among the healthiest and best looked after 2% of horses in the country. The sport employs over 6,000 people to provide first class care and attention for the 14,000 horses in training, providing them with a level of care and a quality of life that is virtually unsurpassed by any other domesticated animal.
“In exchange for these exceptional levels of care Racing asks thoroughbred racehorses to do what they are bred to do, which is race. Despite the best efforts of all involved, as with participation in any sport involving speed and athleticism, there is an inherent risk of injury associated with this. British Racing is open and transparent about the level of risk involved, which has now been reduced to just 0.2% of all runners – a drop of around a third in the last 15 years.
“Horses are at risk of serious injury throughout their lives, regardless of the type of equestrian activity they participate in, even when turned out in a field, exercising at home or racing on the track. A study by Liverpool University found that 62% of “traumatic injuries” (ranging from grazes to fractures) suffered by a sample of leisure and competition horses occurred when turned out in the field, compared to only 13% during ridden exercise. The British Horse Society also estimates that there are over 3,000 road accidents annually involving horses. Stopping racing would not remove or substantially reduce the risk of injury to horses.
“However, if racing were to be stopped there would be catastrophic consequences for the thoroughbred racehorse as a breed as well as for the rural economy. There would also be knock-on implications for the entire horse population. British Racing is committed to providing the best possible standards of veterinary care for its horses and has invested over £25 million since 2000 in Veterinary Research and Education, and the sport’s substantial investment in Veterinary Research and Education brings benefits for all breeds of horse in Britain.”

Hugo Palmer has taken the move to supplement New Providence for Friday's Shadwell Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket. New Providence (right) gets up in the last stride to win at Salisbury last time out. The Bahamian Bounty filly provided Palmer with his second Group winner in a matter of days when getting up in the final strides of the Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes at Salisbury. She beat Richard Hannon's Marsh Hawk, an easy winner of a Listed race at Newbury on Friday. Palmer tweeted: "Delighted with New Providence this morning under Michael Hills. Her form was franked yesterday and she has been supplemented for the Rockfel." New Providence's addition meant that a total of 13 fillies were confirmed for the Group Two over seven furlongs. Champion Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has left in Found and Qualify, who were third and sixth respectively in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last weekend, as well as Listed-placed maiden Together Forever. Moyglare runner-up Lucida, who was only beaten a neck by Cursory Glance, has been given the Rockfel option by her trainer Jim Bolger. Cursory Glance's trainer Roger Varian is represented by Tigrilla, who was well-beaten in the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh after winning a Listed race at Deauville. Barry Hills could run Salisbury maiden scorer Fadhayyil. Completing the baker's dozen are Calypso Beat, East Coast Lady, Home Cummins, Stroll Patrol, Touchline and What Say You

No decision has yet been made over whether World Hurdle winner More Of That will be sent over fences this season. More Of That gets up to beat Annie Power at Cheltenham - doesn't it seem like a long time ago? Trainer Jonjo O'Neill told Channel 4 Racing that the unbeaten six-year-old has yet to be schooled over the bigger obstacles but he does intend to send him over a few fences when there is sufficient give in the ground. More Of That beat Annie Power in a thrilling finish to last season's stayers' crown marking him out as a future star. "You'd love a yard full of horses like him," said O'Neill. "He never does a lot on the gallops, he just goes through the motions. You never really notice him but he's always there at the end. More Of That "We haven't schooled him yet as the ground has been too quick, we'll give him a pop over a few when the ground is right. "Nobody is in any rush to make a decision. "I just want to keep him fit. He's in great form and is a very happy horse at the moment. "As long as he gets back to Cheltenham in one piece I'm not really bothered if it's for a race over hurdles or fences, I just want him to get there."

The Stewards noted that THORNTOUN CARE, placed second, had interfered with DARK RULER (IRE), placed third, just inside the final half furlong, but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it was caused by THORNTOUN CARE hanging quickly left and neither involved a riding offence nor improved THORNTOUN CARE’s placing.
