STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends
ome of our selections went close last week, but hopefully the stats can help us recover our previous winning form this weekend, with the Channel 4-televised action based entirely on the Flat, with coverage scheduled from Newmarket (2.05, 2.35, 3.10 and 3.50) and York (1.50, 2.20, 2.55 and 3.30.) Since last week's newsletter, while Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes are still nigh on inseparable by wins (4 apiece), the top Flat jockey of the week ending Monday, 7 October was William Buick. The young Norwegian rode 9 winners and chalked up the leading strike rate of 37.5%, a figure only approached by the 28% of Jamie Spencer. Trainer Roger Varian's good form continued last week, too. His yard enjoyed a fabulous September, but in the last week alone he sad- dled more winners (5) than any other British trainer and recorded a superb 38% strike rate, the best of any of those trainers to have trained 4 winners or more. In behind Varian by wins and strike rate was John Gosden. Turning to this Saturday’s featured races, Newmarket's Group 2 Challenge Stakes looks a fairly competitive race. Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor has won this race previously and looks to have a fair chance with Lockwood, who is 3 from 9 (33%) over distance, while trainer Aidan O'Brien (general 26% strike rate for last 14 days) has several entered, with his possi- ble runner Darwin the only entrant in this race who is unbeaten on the expected good-firm going and over distance. Later at Newmarket, potential 2,000 Guineas aspirants are put to the test in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, a race won by the favourite four times in the last decade, with three of the other winners going to post at odds shorter than 5/1; in other words, the markets are a fairly reliable guide. Aidan O'Brien's War Command is unbeaten on the ground, and the stable has won this twice in the last 10 years. Also, O'Brien has a £30 per £1 level stake profit at Newmarket in the past five seasons. A possible alternative may be Richard Fahey's Supplicant, who is unbeaten in three starts over distance and, at the time of writing, may be ridden by Ryan Moore, who has a 21% strike rate in the past fortnight. At York, the Listed Rockingham Stakes over 6f looks a decent opportunity for Olly Stephens' Lightning Thunder, who is un- beaten over distance and going. An alterna- tive who may go well at each-way odds is Roger Varian's Mushir, who won his only start over distance, and the stable is bang in form at the moment. Also at York, the Coral Sprint Trophy looks an interesting race, and James Fanshawe's tal- ented filly Hallelujah looks one of the less-ex- posed horses in the race, and is a course and distance winner (5 from 10 over distance), having won a Listed fillies' race there last time, with the third franking the form last weekend. Fanshawe's runners have also won 25% of their races at York in the past five sea- sons. Another who falls into the unexposed category is James Tate's (33% wins from runs in last 14 days) Iptisam, who may be too lowly rated to make the cut, but has won on the going and is heading the right way.

NOTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
With the runners of trainer Charlie Longsdon seem- ingly winning everything in sight over Jumps (50% strike rate in the past fortnight), it might be worth looking at those horses who have shown promise when finishing behind one of Longsdon's winners. One such was trainer Nick Littmoden's THE STIG , who only boasted modest bumper form in his three starts in that sphere last season, but finished third of twelve runners in a 2m 1f novices' hurdle at Huntingdon last Sunday. This race marked the hurdling debut of the The Stig, who is out of a half-sister to a Listed winning hurdler. On account of that bumper form, despite im- proving vastly on his third start last season, The Stig was sent off at 80/1, yet belied his price with a gener- ally fluent round of hurdling and just looked as though he needed the run when a bit flat after the last. Both the winner, Longsdon's Azure Fly, and the Alan King-trained runner-up boasted more race and hur- dling experience than The Stig, for whom this race was also his first start in five months, which may also explain his slightly ebbing effort on the run to the line. In being beaten only just over 11 lengths by the win- ner, who came to this race with a hurdles rating of 135, The Stig has arguably run his best race to date, and could be one to look out for in modest novices' hurdles in the coming weeks, or maybe a novices' handicap hurdle in the longer term. At Fontwell, Longsdon's HANNIBAL THE GREAT made light work of the 2m 4f novices' hurdle and looks up to defying a penalty in similar company. In behind him, trainer Rebecca Curtis' GATE PLEASE ran a fair race on his stable and British debut, having won a Point to point and a bumper in Ireland. The race was also his first outing for 13 months and he looked outpaced on the run-in, suggesting that he will probably come on for the run and may also appreci- ate a stiffer test than could be provided by 2m 4f around the sharp confines of Fontwell. In the same race, GUN SHY , trained by Gary Moore, was probably capable of more than his third-place finish suggests. He was just beginning to mount a challenge to the eventual winner and runner-up when his saddle slipped. That dropped him to fifth and he was then ham- pered at the next flight, but stayed on to get third. Whether Gun Shy would have given the winner some- thing to think about without these mishaps is debate- able, but this former bumper winner from Ireland certainly showed some ability. The runners of trainer Donald McCain are just begin- ning to find their form as they return from their sum- mer breaks, with British and stable debutant DISPOUR looking a potentially useful recruit. Held in some regard by McCain according to reports, the three-year-old juvenile hurdler made all to win at Ban- gor last week, defying a fellow hurdling debutant of Alan King's, HEROD THE GREAT , who was fit from running on the Flat only a few weeks earlier. Bred by the Aga Khan, Dispour is out of a half-sister to the Arc winner Dalakhani, and won a 10f Flat handicap on his fourth and final start in France in June. He was sold for €175,000 at the sales the fol- lowing month, and joined McCain. Connections reportedly felt that the ground on this latest start was too testing for Dispour, but it was nonetheless a pleasing start to his hurdling career, with the expectation that he will progress in juvenile hurdles this season. Herod The Great also made his hurdling debut at Ban- gor and time will probably prove that he was unlucky to bump into one as good as Dispour. The pair finished more than 30 lengths clear of the third horse home, and although the generally better quality horses are coming out in greater numbers as we get further into October, there's nothing to say that Herod The Great won't hold his own in similar company next time.

RACING NEWS.
Trainer Alan King's promising chaser Invictus is reported to be on schedule to make a comeback in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury at the end of next month. Invictus established his credentials as a potential star chaser when winning the Reynoldstown at Ascot last year, in doing so becoming the last horse to defeat sub- sequent Hennessy and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Bobs Worth. King reported that he would ideally like to give Invictus a prep-run before the Hennessy, but said the plan was weather-dependent at this stage. The impressive victory of superstar filly Treve in last Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Tri- omphe provided trainer Criquette Head- Maarek with her second Arc win, her first being in 1979, and remains the only woman to train an Arc winner. Treve was ridden by Thierry Jarnet, who had also won the race twice previously, and was replac- ing owner Sheikh Joann Al Thani's retained jockey Frankie Dettori. Treve would have been Dettori's 26th consecutive mount in the Arc, but the former British champion had to forgo his ride after breaking a bone in his foot in a fall at Nottingham in the week prior to the Arc. Treve was bred by Head-Maarek's father, Alec, twice a winner of the Arc as a trainer. A three-year-old daughter of Motivator, who also won the Prix Diane and Prix Vermeille this season, Treve has been quoted as short as 2/1 for next season's Arc. Roger Charlton's Al Kazeem finished sixth in the Arc, and will now be retired to stud. Al Kazeem, who won three Group 1 races this season, will stand at Sandringham Stud. Moscow Mannon, who was fourth in last season's Champion Bumper at Chel- tenham, has moved to the stable of Henry De Bromhead, who said that the long-term plan is for him to go chasing. De Brom- head, best known for his successes with the former champion two-mile chaser, Sizing Europe, reported that the stable star is on course for the Champion Chase at Down Royal next month, after winning the equivalent Grade 2 race at Gowran Park last weekend for the third year in a row. The British Horseracing Authority has agreed in principle to the proposal for hav- ing racing on Good Friday, though has yet to decide which racecourses will be awarded fixtures. The proposal had met with opposition from some, who were against the introduction of another day's racing, but the BHA has countered this by the announcement that there will be no overall increase in fixtures in 2014 over the 1,464 in 2013. The number of all-weather fixtures in winter months will be cut by 21 next year, the majority being slashed be- tween January and March, due to poor at- tendances. These will be replaced by 13 Jumps fixtures, with more Jumps fixtures also scheduled for Northern racecourses between September and October, in re- sponse to requests from trainers. Popular chaser Grey Abbey has died at the age of 19. Trained by Howard Johnson, Grey Abbey won the Scottish National in 2004, plus the Betfair Bowl, Pillar Chase and Charlie Hall Chase in 2005. Graham Lee, who switched to riding on the Flat in the last two seasons, hailed Grey Abbey as the best chaser he ever rode, ahead of his 2004 Grand National winner, Amberleigh House.

RACE RATINGS.
Saturday, 12 October - 2.05 Newmarket Dubai Challenge Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3yo+) 7f
0-1006 Trumpet Major 91 4 9-7 Richard Hannon Promise of last season - 4th in 2,000 Guineas - and early portion of campaign has ebbed slightly, but has some appeal after a short break and the prospect of autumn ground, as pick of form has been on good or good to soft. RATING 95 741244 Amarillo 27 4 9-3 P Schiergen Landed Haydock's Group 3 Jury Stakes earlier this sum- mer from Pastoral Player, and followed that with a fair second to Moonlight Cloud in a Group 2 at Longchamp. The winner has since franked the form again and Amar- illo looks a fair each-way prospect. RATING 96 810242 Ansgar 27 5 9-3 Sabrina J Harty Son of Celtic Swing who has progressed this season for dropping back to a mile, twice finishing runner-up in Group 3s, including behind subsequent Group 1 winner Gordon Lord Byron. Drop back to 7f here doesn't look en- tirely convincing and looks likely to be competing for the smaller prizes. RATING 94 511784 Arnold Lane 7 4 9-3 Mick Channon Fourth in a competitive handicap at Ascot last weekend was Arnold Lane's strongest performance for some time, having been comfortably beaten in his two previous starts in Listed and Group 2 races. Despite apparent re- turn to form, others preferred. RATING 95 290129 Gabriel ́s Lad 21 4 9-3 Denis Coakley Wasn't disgraced when behind the winner Highland Col- ori in the Ayr Gold Cup last time, on the back of a largely successful season in handicaps. Has form on a variety of ground, but still has something to find on step up in class on first run in a Group race. RATING 94 106311 Highland Colori 21 5 9-3 Andrew Balding Good servant for yard this season and last, winning 7 races from 19 starts in the period, including the Ayr Gold Cup last time. Now rated 111 and no problem stepping back up to 7f, having won 4 from 13 over distance. RATING 98 674595 Libranno 34 5 9-3 Richard Hannon Former three-time Group 2 winner, who has run consistently and respectably in similar races, and in Group 1s, without really ever looking like a winner. Beaten by Lockwood, Producer and Amarillo already this season. RATING 94 043112 Lockwood 28 4 9-3 Saeed bin Suroor Formerly with Andre Fabre this season before switching to Suroor, and has left slightly disappointing campaign in Dubai behind this summer. British debut third in Wind- sor Listed race has given way to two wins, including a Group 3 at Goodwood, and second last time in Group 2 Park Stakes. That form entitles him to be on the prem- ises in this company. RATING 99 413-13 Afonso De Sousa 8 3 9-1 A P O ́Brien Less exposed than some of these and interesting that connections are dropping him back to 7f for this race, having run (and won) over 1m 3f on his last two starts. Close third to Dundonell in Group 3 Acomb Stakes over 7f last season. Respected. RATING 96 S4-581 Cristoforo Colombo 8 3 9-1 A P O ́Brien Ran very well in some august company this season and last, finishing third in the Coventry, fourth in the Middle Park Stakes and fifth in the 2,000 Guineas. Given that form, slightly disappointing that he appeared to make heavy weather of winning a Dundalk conditions race last time, when odds-on. RATING 95 183663 Leitir Mor 58 3 9-1 J S Bolger Twice a Group 3 winner in busy campaigns in both of last two seasons but has fallen short when tried at the high- est level. Held by Darwin when third to that horse in the Minstrel Stakes earlier in season, and probably has fair place claims. RATING 97 111733 Professor 48 3 9-1 Richard Hannon Son of Byron who has improved from handicaps to Group races this season, establishing himself in that company with two Listed wins and two Group 3-thirds to his name, including behind Lockwood last time, at Goodwood. Probably held on that form and possibly not as much im- provement to come from him as some of the other three- year-olds in this race. RATING 96 111615 Fiesolana 35 4 9-0 W McCreery Held but not disgraced on step up to Group 1 company when fifth in the Matron Stakes last time. Also that race was over a mile, and better form seems to have come over 7f this sea- son, winning three Group 3 races. Could make the frame at a nice price with a bit of improvement. RATING 96 14-113 Darwin 27 3 9-1 A P O ́Brien Son of Big Brown who has won first three of five starts and could have more to come. Looked a little stretched by 1m last time, when third in the Group 3 Solonoway Stakes, but interesting in this company on form when he beat subsequent Group 1 winner Gordon Lord Byron in the Minstrel Stakes over 7f in July. Could run a big race. RATING 100

ONE of Britain's most exciting and talented young jockeys is being prevented from riding after finding himself the subject of a BHA investigation that could continue for up to six months.
Darren Egan was among the early favourites to win this year's apprentice championship, but he has been unable to ride in public for more than six weeks despite protests from the Professional Jockeys Association.
Egan was poised on the heels of the leaders in the title race with 22 winners and looked set to mount a major challenge when last seen in the saddle at Warwick on August 26.
The first indication of a problem came two days later when officials attributed the 21-year-old missing three booked mounts at Kempton to a complication with his licence, but it has since emerged it had been relinquished 24 hours earlier and the BHA has so far refused to consider his application for a new one.
Jockeys accused of even the most serious corruption offences are permitted to continue riding until the disciplinary process concludes, but while no charges have been issued against Egan, his case is different in that the BHA's rules prohibit granting a licence to any individual under investigation by its security department.
Egan, who rode 47 winners last year, was in the process of switching his licence from Ron Harris, for whom he had not ridden since May 23, to Newmarket trainer John Butler when his career as a rising star of the Flat was brought to a sudden halt.
Egan, who was desperate to win the apprentice crown after finishing runner-up to Amy Ryan last season when sidelined for the final three weeks of the campaign with a broken collarbone, is now working as a stable employee at Butler's yard while his future on the track remains in doubt.
He burst on to the scene after joining Harris last year and it is believed the investigation relates to the period prior to his decision to relocate to Newmarket five months ago.
There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by the Chepstow-based trainer, although the probe could possibly involve Egan's riding of one or more of his horses.
PJA chief executive Paul Struthers said on Thursday night: "Back in August Darren sought to move employer and as would be usual the BHA wished to speak to both parties to establish the facts before allowing the move.
"This delay would normally be a couple of weeks but it was over three weeks before the BHA even agreed to interview Darren about the reasons for his move.
"At this interview Darren was issued with a telephone production order and told he would need to be interviewed separately as part of an investigation. He was specifically told this interview might not take place for a number of months.
"The BHA investigator's report into the circumstances surrounding Darren's new application was submitted on Monday, September 23, but it wasn't until 4.40pm on the Friday the BHA informed Darren they would not consider licensing him until his telephone records had been received - he'd been given 21 days to produce those records at the interview nine days earlier - and he'd been interviewed.
"We immediately complained to the BHA, although again had to wait until the middle of the following week for a response. We formally responded last Friday and again only received their response today, when they became aware that a media story - unprompted by us - was pending."
Struthers added: "We entirely support a robust approach to integrity but it must be fair and no regulator should abuse the powers bestowed upon it as the BHA is in danger of appearing to do, however temporarily - in this case.
"They have already deprived Darren of the chance to earn a living for seven weeks and the inexcusable delays have caused the matter to get into the public domain.
"We warned the BHA about this and the damage this would cause to Darren's reputation. The damage is now done, although we hope his willingness to take the unprecedented step of confirming the investigation will go some way to repairing it."
BHA spokesman Robin Mounsey said: "It is BHA policy not to comment on investigations or speculation surrounding potential investigations."

14:55 Saturday 12th October Racing Tips - 12/10/2013
Much will be made of the ground today at Newmarket (currently good to firm) and the forecast at the moment is terrible. It could well be soft come off time and that will not suit some of those fancied at the start of the week. Nicky Henderson has a good record in this but Liuetenant Miller looks to be one of those who will not welcome the rain. A horse that will, however, is Earth Amber, who we haven't seen since being well beaten in the Sagaro Stakes at the start of the summer. That form has clearly worked out well but she didn't really run her race that day and looked out paced as they kicked for home. She stayed on well over 14 furlongs on penultimate start at Nottingham and a good gallop over today's trip may suit. The truth is that she is something of an unknown, very unexposed over marathon distances, but top connections make her appealing at 25/1. I think Brockwell will be right up there but the ground is a worry, though he has won on soft, and, of those at the top of the market, Tiger Cliff and the french raider Smoky Hill are of great interest. However, Pallasator has had just the 1 start this term and should appreciate the step up in trip. He hasn't gone unnoticed at 9/1 but is well drawn and will want as much rain as possible. Newmarket 15.50 - Earth Amber 1pt e/w Newmarket 15.50 - Pallasator 1pt e/w
The Coral Sprint Trophy has a bit of pace in there tomorrow but little of it drawn low. The majority should come from stalls 10 to 14 and that will suit the likes of Seeking Magic and Khubala. Take Cover gave the form of the former a boost yesterday when winning here and Clive Cox's 5 year old was unlucky last time out at Ripon when flying from the back and hampered on his way. He has a super record with Ryan Tate on top and is perfectly drawn in amongst the pace at 10/1. The next choice is Baccarat or Khubala, though I'll back them both. Richard Fahey has a good record in the race and last won it with Kaldoun Kingdom, also a 4 year old, in 2009. Baccarat went close in the Ayr Gold Cup on ground softer than ideal, has won here over a furlong further and has Tony Hamilton back on today who has won on him on 3 of 4 starts. However, on course and distance form when both were hampered back in June (though Baccarat had the worst of it), Hugo Palmer's 4 year old is far better treated and we haven't seen the best of him yet this term. He travelled really well at Ayr before something went wrong and we have to hope that is behind him but I'm convinced he will go off shorter than 12/1. York 15.30 - Seeking Magic 1pt e/w York 15.30 - Khubala 1pt e/w
Brave Boy looked destined for a Pattern company win at some point this year and I'm not too concerned by his flop in Group 3 company last time on the all weather. He was upset in the stalls and, whilst this is very decent Listed company, he looks a safe bet at 7/1. He dispatched stable mate Music Theaory at Nottingham in July, who went on to compete with Kingman in Group company last month. Whilst Brave Boy may not reach the heights that were considered possible when he romped home (again at Nottingham) in August, he certainly looks capable of a Listed win and should fare better back on turf. The current ground looks ideal and, with a few front runners in the line-up, he should have a decent pace to chase. Most likely winner is surely Rufford and the yard are flying at the moment but he's quite short and there are still some unexposed sorts lining up. York 14.55 - Brave Boy 1pt e/w

Timeform have questioned the practice of compressing the weights for the Crabbies Grand National in the latest edition of Chasers & Hurdlers, which is published on Saturday. Tidal Bay: Was set to race off favourable mark in the Grand National They make their argument in the essay on Tiday Bay who headed the weights when they were published for this year's Aintree showpiece on 11st 10lb. His mark of 162 was four pounds lower than the one he raced off when second to Bobs Worth in November's Hennssy and nine pounds below his mark away from Aintree. Timeform said: "The BHA handicappers have the discretion to treat some of the Grand National top weights relatively leniently, a policy that has always been hard to justify yet seems to go unquestioned. The top seven horses at the top of the original Grand National weights could have run from lower marks at Aintree than they would have been allotted in other big handicaps, though for the three who eventually ran, Imperial Commander, What A Friend and Weird Al, the difference was just a couple of pounds. "The routine compressing of the top weights in the National has been justified by the BHA's Head of Handicapping, Phil Smith, who says 'I believe the effect of weight increases with distance.' "Such an effect apparently applies, however, only to those at the top of the handicap - not to any of those originally allotted 11-3 or less in the latest National, for example - and it apparently does not apply in any other long-distance handicap. The latest Grand National winner Auroras Encore, who carried 10-3 at Aintree, had his official BHA mark raised 11 lb after that race but there was no special concession for him in the weights for the four-mile Scottish National; he made his bid for history at Ayr under top weight of 11-12, which reflected the full 11 lb rise in his BHA mark. "The Grand National is far and away the most valuable race in the jumping calendar in Britain and Ireland and, in truth, the owners of the best chasers shouldn't need any greater incentive than that."

Since my last blog I have been declared fit for racing and had my first two rides back! Joe Tizzard: Still hungry for winners It's fantastic to be back in the weighing room and back in the saddle. I will admit I was a tad nervous with my first spin back on Saturday for the boss Mr Tizzard - I was due to have another ride later that day for Jamie Snowden but the horse was pulled out to the ground not being soft enough. Thankfully I had a good first ride back and finished fifth, and was relieved to get the first one out the way. I wasted no time with another go at Huntingdon a day later on a little mare called Godwit, I was still in front turning in and for a minute I thought I was about to have my first winner back, however, she got done for a bit of speed turning in and ran a creditable fourth. There is no jump racing until Wednesday but with a few meetings during the rest of the week I should be back race-fit shortly. As this is my first season without my claim I will have to work a lot harder with getting rides outside of my base yard as Joe (Tizzard) is still as hungry as ever for rides and winners, and when you have no claim trainers have no real reason to use you apart from your ability as a jockey - unless, of course, you ride out there regularly - so it's very important to keep your trainers happy. After I was given the all-clear to ride again I moved myself back down to Sherborne where my boss trains. Joe Tizzard and his wife Emma have been very kind and let me stay with them until I have finally bought my own place. It's all very exciting now with the season proper getting underway and, with the Tizzards having such a great yard of horses, any spares I can pick up behind Joe are sure to have anyone looking forward to the winter ahead. My good friend Eddie Linehan has taken my place as the yard conditional and I hope he has a good year as he definitely deserves it. I also must say another big thanks to Oaksey House and its team as without them I wouldn't have been back as quickly as I am. I know everyone that has been there says the same thing but there is good reason for it as it really is a fantastic place for us injured jockeys. It was great to see Patrick Corbett and James Banks in the last few days get their first winners back from injury and hopefully it won't be too long until I can get mine as well, fingers crossed I might have had it by the time you read next week's blog! Dave Ord reviews Mark Howard's 'One Jump Ahead' and 'Doped', by Jamie Reid. Henderson and Nicholls: Both spoke to Mark Howard racing In the introduction to the latest edition of his flagship publication Mark Howard says: "Thanks for buying a copy of One Jump Ahead, which I hope you find enjoyable, profitable and, most of all, value for money." At £7.99 I, for one, challenge you not to. Now in its 20th year, the book is a labour of love for the author, a regular Racing UK pundit and a fantastic read for anyone with one eye (or, for that matter, two) on the forthcoming National Hunt season. It follows the familiar format of Mark picking out his top 40 prospects, including the invaluable Points To Note feature highlighting potential distance, going and track preferences. The Talking Trainers segment is one of the book's main strengths. It features stable tours from 11 of the leading yards including the superpowers of Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, Donald McCain and David Pipe. There is tremendous insight from all, Henderson in particular on some of the horses bubbling under the surface and Nicholls on the new recruits to the Ditcheat team as he looks to build another battalion capable of going to war with at the major spring festivals. Henderson says of Mono Man "A high class horse but, unfortunately, he has not been seen, except by me and the vet, for some time." And he has details of the latest grey powerhouse to have arrived from the Ian Ferguson-Ronnie Bartlett academy. There's much, much more. 'Anthony Bromley's Best Buys', penned by the bloodstock agent to the stars, is equally insightful and contains details of potential top notchers not only heading to the aforementioned trainers but the likes of Charlie Longsdon, Warren Greatrex, Alan King, Nigel Twiston-Davies and Malcolm Jefferson. The 'Declan Phelan's Irish Pointers' section has already thrown up two winners this autumn in Cloudy Brook (evens) and Minella Foru (8/1) are undoubtedly there are plenty more in there. He highlights horses who made an impact between the flags and who have now switched codes and in some cases crossed the Irish Sea. There's enough information in the first 20 pages alone to justify the cover price and it runs to 168. Read, enjoy and load up your My Stable tracker for the weeks and months ahead. One Jump Ahead is published by Mark Howard Publications Ltd and available through www.mhpublications.co.ukDoped, by Jamie Reid, is a very different and more disturbing read. It tells the story of a racehorse doping gang who ran amok in the sport in the 1960s, managing to nobble the Derby favourite Pinturischio before his intended run in the Dante. He was never the same horse again. Reid does a wonderful job in profiling the central characters, Bill 'Mr Racing' Roper and his lover Micheline Lugeon whose charms allowed the gang to access the most powerful yards in the land. Charlie Mitchell was a fearsome individual with links to the Kray twins and is a growing presence throughout the story. Then there are the former stable lads who administered the substances which were provided by Teddy Smith - the self-proclaimed 'Witch Doctor'. The story of how a drunken afternoon of his at Brighton races hastened their downfall is a remarkable read. This is a fascinating book, very well written. I was a huge fan of similar tomes Ringers And Rascals, by the incomparable David Ashforth, and Racing In The Dock, Richard Griffiths' gripping account of the scandal that hit the sport in the 1990s with Dermot Browne among that particular cast of rogues. It says much about the quality of Doped that it is a book that sits comfortably alongside both. If I have one criticism it's that having told the reader so much about 'Team Roper', details of their lives after the long arm of the law catches up with them is very light. It would have been much more satisfying to know what became of them all in later years - rather than the odd snippet and teaser. However overall Doped told me about an episode in the rich history of horse racing and betting I knew nothing about before picking up the book. And told it very well. Doped is published by Racing Post Books and available from www.racingpost.com/shop

The BHA gave permission for fences 8 and 10 to be omitted in all steeple chases due to the ground being under repair.
2.15, first race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference after the last fence. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that the winner, STREAMS OF WHISKEY (IRE), ridden by Brian Harding, had interfered with HIGHBURY HIGH (IRE), placed second, ridden by Brian Hughes. The Stewards found Harding in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to drift left handed thereby causing interference. They cautioned him as to his future conduct in races.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, STREAMS OF WHISKEY (IRE), ridden by Brian Harding and trained by Nicky Richards, compared with its previous run at Perth on 16 May 2013 where the gelding was pulled up. 16:40 Sunday 13th October Racing Tips - 13/10/2013
That was some shock yesterday with Scatter Dice winning the Cesarewitch but there were clues to suggest 66/1 was generous. She wasn't beaten far in the Northumberland Plate off 2lb higher and has a 100% record with De Sousa on top. That first time visor eked out the required improvement but she was tricky to find in a strong line up of form horses. The form horse I like in the Irish version today is Weather Watch at 10/1 for Jessica Harrington and the impressive claimer Connor King. The yard won this in 2007 and 3 year olds have tasted success in the race in 4 of the last 5 renewals. He was staying on last time over 2 furlongs shorter at Leopardstown and should appreciate 2 miles on decent ground. Preference is just for him over Time For Action, the other 3 year old of serious interest, though both look equally progressive. The other I think is worth a nibble is Olympiad for the Dermot Weld team that won this last year. He won a valuable handicap last term before failing on his end of season run in last year's Cesarewitch. Badly drawn in the Chester Cup this term, he was stone cold last in May but I'm not sure all was well that day and he returns after a 5 month absence. He has gone well fresh before and looks leniently treated at 28/1 if resuming last season's progression. Curragh 16.40 - Weather Watch 1pt e/w Curragh 16.40 - Olympiad 1pt e/w

Ground conditions are expected to be on the soft side for QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday. Declaration Of War: Could head to the Breeders' Cup Clerk of the course Chris Stickels described the going as good to soft, soft in places after he walked the track on Sunday . The course has already absorbed 16 millimetres of rain since Thursday and the forecast for the week is an unsettled one. "It's a mixture of good to soft and soft today. We've had eight millimetres so far and it's still raining at the minute," said Stickels. "We've had 16mm since Thursday after a dry week before that. The wet weather we've had has turned it on the soft side. "It's a bit of an unsettled forecast for the week. There are more showers due on Monday. Tuesday and Thursday could be dry days. "It's a bit early to be sure yet, but it looks like showers are due next weekend again. "We are due further showers today while tomorrow is not going to be as wet with rain again on Wednesday. Tuesday and Thursday are possibly dry then we could get showers again after that so it points towards the going being on the easy side." The prospect of soft ground is not good news for Aidan O'Brien who may now have to reroute Declaration Of War to the Breeders' Cup. Clearing up news on a few of his stable big guns O'Brien said: "The horse who won at Dundalk on Friday night (Giovanni Boldini) could go for the Breeders' Cup, and he's still in the Racing Post Trophy. "Australia is finished and most of the rest of them are finished now. Declaration Of War will run in one of the two races next week if the ground is good, otherwise he will go to America. Darwin could drop back six furlongs next week, we have Camelot in there and Kingsbarns in there too." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keith Dalgleish is hoping to be among the winners on Musselburgh's final Flat fixture of the season. Keith Dalgleish: Hoping to sign off with a winner The Carluke trainer is strongly represented on the seven-race card with Corton Lad flying the flag for his yard in the Betfair Scottish Stayers' Final over 1m 5f. He said: "It's a good pot for this time of year and I think he will run well. He's in good form and the track and the trip will suit. The £15,000 contest also features John Quinn's recent Ayr winner Calculated Risk and Richard Fahey-trained Bayan Kasirga who shoulders a 6lb penalty for last Tuesday's Catterick strike. Jim Goldie, who had four runners in Saturday's Cesarewitch, is triple-handed with course winner Hawdyerwheesht, Titus Bolt and three-time Musselburgh scorer Grand Diamond. Dalgleish also saddles Chookie Royale and Sound Advice in the McEwan Fraser Handicap and added: "Hopefully the rain will stay away for 'Chookie' as the ground is perfect for him. He's good good draw and the ground was too tacky for him at Ayr last month. "Sound Advice was very unlucky last week in the straight mile final at Redcar as he was just caught and short-headed on the line. He's also won over course and distance and is also in very good form." The final race of Musselburgh's 2013 campaign is the £20,000 Willie Park Trophy which sees impressive Catterick maiden winner, Mark Johnston-trained Commissioned, head the weights on his first crack at handicap company.

Oliver Sherwood is excited about the prospect of sending Many Clouds novice chasing this season. Many Clouds: A couple of weeks off a run Second in the EBF Final at Sandown in March to Close Touch, the Trevor Hemmings-owned six-year-old found fast ground against him on his final outing of the campaign. Always viewed as a potential chaser, Sherwood is counting down the days to beginning his new career and once the rain arrives, he will be ready to run in a couple of weeks. "Many Clouds schooled on Thursday morning," said Sherwoood. "Like many of mine he wouldn't run on the ground we have at the moment, he'd need genuinely good to soft ground. "He's just a couple of weeks off a run, like most of them are at this stage, but I'm very happy with where he is at. I wouldn't want to be running him on tight tracks, I'll be looking for a nice galloping track but not somewhere like Cheltenham. "Two and a half miles will be nice to start him off and he's a very exciting prospect. Everything we've done with him so far was all about what he does from here."
