Murphy keen on Quito bid
Colm Murphy is convinced Quito De La Roque's fortitude could stand him in good stead for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.
The Grade One-winning 10-year-old has had a disappointing season - he was pulled up on his last outing at Fairyhouse in February - but the County Wexford handler is not without optimism.
Quito De La Roque shaped encouragingly in two previous starts at Aintree, most significantly when he won the Mildmay Novices' Chase in 2011.
Murphy said: "He's going along nicely at home. He's had his problems over the years but he's a tough horse, which is obviously important in the National. We're very happy with him and his preparation has gone well."
Fergal O'Brien has provisionally recruited Paddy Brennan for Alvarado - should regular jockey Paul Moloney not be available. With Moloney seemingly poised to get the leg-up aboard One In A Milan, trained by long-standing ally Evan Williams, Brennan is in pole position.
Gloucestershire-based O'Brien said: "Paddy Brennan will be on him if Paul can't get off Evan's horse. There's not been any problems since his last run. All we've done is freshen him up at home with this in mind."
The nine-year-old gelding is owned by Angela and William Rucker, who have had a placed horse in the National for the last five years.
Fellow Gloucestershire trainer Hilary Parrott was heartened by Wayward Prince's fluency over the mock Grand National fences which are situated in Lambourn.
The 10-year-old gave Harry Topper an almighty run for his money in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby in November, but has since been unable to maintain that form and will be ridden by Jack Doyle.
Parrott said: "We went to Lambourn with him and he jumped some of the National-type fences. That gave us quite a bit of encouragement. Jack is coming over on Wednesday and we'll give him another pop.
"After that, we'll sit down and work out a bit of a gameplan. I guess the important thing is to keep him out of trouble and keep clear of the debris."
With Jason Maguire sidelined after suffering frightful injuries at Stratford earlier this month, Henry Brooke will resume riding duties aboard Across The Bay. The Donald McCain-trained 10-year-old, owned locally by the Scotch Piper syndicate, finished 14th under Brooke 12 months ago.
Kevin Coyne, a lawyer from nearby Crosby and part of the Scotch Piper team, said: "Donald asked us on Sunday about Henry riding and we were absolutely fine with it. He knows the course very well and is a very good jockey.
"It's absolutely tragic what happened to Jason, but Coventry Hospital did outstandingly well with him and they deserve a huge pat on the back. Something like that brings home how jumps jockeys are such brave individuals."

Deegan delighted by opening efforts
Trainer Paul Deegan believes the future is bright for both Shining Emerald and Avenue Gabriel following their fine efforts in defeat in the Guineas Trials at Leopardstown on Sunday.
Shining Emerald won twice during a productive juvenile campaign and made a pleasing reappearance in the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial, beaten just three-quarters of a length into second by the race-fit Go For Goal.
Avenue Gabriel, having her first start since finishing fifth in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Newmarket, was not beaten far into third in the 1,000 Guineas Trial, finishing on the heels of two exciting fillies in Bracelet and Balansiya.
Deegan said: "Both horses have come out of their races well and we were delighted with how both of them performed on the day.
"Shining Emerald was just beaten by a better horse on the day, but it was a good performance for his first run back. The two of them pulled a couple of lengths clear of the third and it was a nice run.
"Chris (Hayes) gave him a great ride and just thought the ground was slow enough for him on the day. I'm not sure where we'll go next. We'll see how he is and go from there."
Deegan was particularly pleased with Avenue Gabriel's effort over seven furlongs as he expects her to excel over a mile and a quarter and possible a mile and a half later in the campaign.
"Avenue Gabriel ran a very good race, especially over that sort of trip as we know she'll want a bit further in time," he said.
"I'd say the front three are all very good fillies and the two that finished in front of her look top drawer.
"Our filly showed she has progressed well from two to three and hopefully we'll have an exciting year with her. All options are open at this stage. We've not made any decisions on where she might head next."

Hughes suffers fractured vertebrae
Richard Hughes will not require surgery despite fracturing a vertebrae in a nasty fall at Meydan on Saturday.
The champion jockey was partnering the Mike de Kock-trained Mars in the Dubai Sheema Classic when his mount crashed through the far rail after running just a couple of furlongs, throwing Hughes over the top as he tried to pull him up.
Mars reportedly suffered a heart attack in the incident.
Hughes' wife Lizzie said on Twitter: "Richard has a stable fracture of one vertebrae, no pain at all, just rest needed and no surgery needed #lucky."

Spanish colt books HQ ticket
Spain's leading three-year-old Noozhoh Canarias booked his ticket for the Qipco 2000 Guineas with an effortless victory at La Zarzuela in Madrid.
His only career defeat to date came in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Arc day at Longchamp, when he finished three-quarters of a length second to Karakontie.
Noozhoh Canarias is trained by Enrique Leon, a former employee of Newmarket handler James Fanshawe.
"Noozhoh Canarias did everything very easily today in his normal front-running style even though he was not very happy with the ground - it was a bit soft for him," said Leon.
"He was probably only about 70 per cent fit today and did more or less what I expected. The crowd here in Madrid was amazing - everybody has been going crazy about him.
"The plan now is definitely to take him to Newmarket for the 2000 Guineas. I will be going to Newmarket myself for the Craven meeting (on April 16 and 17) and will meet up with Michael Prosser then to finalise our arrangements.
"We have yet to decide who will ride him in the Guineas."

Toast enters Epsom frame
Jamie Osborne is planning to supplement Toast Of New York for the Investec Derby following his Meydan victory on Saturday.
The son of Thewayyouare stepped up on two wide-margin wins at Wolverhampton last year to land the Group Two UAE Derby in the hands of Jamie Spencer.
Owned by Michael Buckley, Toast Of New York will now be added to the field for the Epsom Classic on June 7 with Osborne hopeful he would see out the trip if he lines up.
He told At The Races: "I'm going to see Michael today and we will discuss the future. It's not impossible (he will go to America), all options are open to us. I will be supplementing him for the English Derby as well and we'll keep all options open.
"Watching last night, it took Jamie until halfway down the back to pull him up. There's plenty in his pedigree to suggest he will get a mile and a half and I'm a great believer that horses stay if they travel. I'm thinking a mile and a half, if he's well in nine weeks' time, it's not impossible he will get it.
"There's only one English Derby."
While Epsom is on the radar, Osborne is keen to assess the condition of his stable star when he arrives back in Britain before mapping out any firm plans.
He said: "I think what you have to bear in mind with this horse is that we've had to do quite a lot of work at an early stage in his life to get him into a position so that he could win last night. It remains to be seen how tired he will be when he gets home.
"He flies back on Monday night, he will be back in Lambourn on Tuesday and I think a lot of the decisions are going to have to wait until we see what the whole trip has taken out of him.
"I think we might just be thinking longer term with him. If we look after him, I don't think it's impossible this horse could come back and compete in the World Cup.
"Michael would love to have a horse to go round the world with, have a bit of fun and go chasing some money, and maybe he is that horse."

Fugue fine after Meydan flop
The Fugue is reported to be none the worse after her disappointing display in the Dubai Duty Free at Meydan.
John Gosden's three-time Group One-winning mare had only twice previously finished out of the first three in 14 career starts and one of those occasions was her fourth place in the 1000 Guineas two years ago.
Making her first appearance since being narrowly denied in the Hong Kong Vase last December, the five-year-old was unsurprisingly strongly fancied for her Dubai debut, but trailed home a well-beaten 11th of the 13 runners.
Simon Marsh, racing manager for owners Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber, said: "She's absolutely fine this morning and it was just one of those things.
"We'll regroup when we get back to England and make a plan from there."

Wachman considering Sudir plan
Ground conditions will dictate where David Wachman's Group One-winning colt Sudirman will kick off his three-year-old campaign.
The son of Henrythenavigator won both the Railway and Phoenix Stakes last summer before finding only Toormore too strong in the National Stakes.
Wachman's charge signed off his juvenile year with a creditable fifth in the Middle Park at Newmarket and the trainer is now considering his early-season options, with the Qipco 2000 Guineas among them.
"He's in all the Guineas and a few other races and we'll see which way we're going to go closer to the time," said the trainer.
"He's in good form and working away well. We're pleased with him at the moment.
"He likes good ground, so that will have a big bearing on plans for him."

Karakontie set for Longchamp return
Classic hopeful Karakontie will make his seasonal reappearance in the Prix de Fontainebleau at Longchamp on April 13.
The Jonathan Pease-trained colt won three of his four starts as a juvenile, rounding off his campaign by clinching Group One glory in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in Paris on Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe day.
He is a best priced 25-1 for the Qipco 2000 Guineas on May 3, but connections are unsurprisingly keen to see how he performs in his trial before deciding whether he will travel to Newmarket.
Alan Cooper, racing manager for the Niarchos family, said: "Karakontie is in good form and as the Prix Djebel (April 3) is coming up a bit quick, the plan is for him to start off in the Prix de Fontainebleau. We will see how he runs in that race before we make plans for the rest of the season."
Another star for the owners is David Wachman's talented mare Duntle, albeit running under the Flaxman Stables banner.
A winner at Royal Ascot in last year's Duke Of Cambridge Stakes, the daughter of Danehill Dancer has remained in training as a five-year-old in an attempt to clinch an elusive first Group One haul.
"This is always an exciting time of year and hopefully we have some nice horses, but we'll let them do the talking," said Cooper.
"Duntle stayed in training and we'll see if we can try to find that Group One race for her somewhere."

Dolatulo camp consider appeal
Connections of Dolatulo look set to lodge an appeal with the British Horseracing Authority following his controversial demotion at Stratford on Saturday.
The 9-1 shot passed the post in front in the Great Value Wines From Bordeaux Undiscovered Handicap Chase, but the stewards held an inquiry into possible interference between the winner and the runner-up, 15-8 favourite Benbens.
The latter's jockey, Sam Twiston-Davies, was left with nowhere to go as he aimed to bypass the water jump with just strides remaining, and almost went through the rail. The stewards found Dolatulo's jockey, Gavin Sheehan, guilty of careless riding and reversed the result, leaving trainer Warren Greatrex incandescent.
Greatrex said: "We're waiting to hear what Paul Struthers (chief executive of Professional Jockeys Association) thinks. He will advise Gavin whether he thinks it is worth appealing or not, so we'll go from there.
"I would imagine Gavin will go for it, but even if he doesn't, I know the owner is very keen to appeal, so we'll explore that avenue as well.
"It's all about opinions, but normally with these things you have people saying they can see why they have reversed the result. I haven't spoken to a single person who thinks it was the correct decision.
"Gavin was given four days for careless riding and I'm not sure what he was supposed to do. Should he have just let the other horse through? I don't think you can do that. It wasn't as though Gavin was moving his reins to veer into the other horse. He kept his horse straight and rode him out to the line.
"For me, Sam was following the loose horse and at the last minute he has looked up. I think he was too late and he was the one in the wrong, not Gavin.
"The stewards also said the other horse was finishing fast and would have got up. I don't know how anyone can say that. They only went about three strides and I don't think you can say the other horse would definitely have won.
"Gavin has lost a winner, we've lost a winner and the owner has lost a winner.
"It's happened now, so we'll move on, take advice and go from there. I'm disappointed for the horse as he's been a revelation and in my opinion, he won the race on merit."

O'Brien laments World failure
Aidan O'Brien feels Ruler Of The World's failure to act on the Tapeta surface was to blame for his disappointing display in Saturday's Dubai World Cup.
Last year's Investec Derby hero was among the leading contenders for the world's richest race, but making his debut on an artificial track, he trailed home 13th of the 16 runners in the hands of the trainer's son, Joseph.
Speaking at Leopardstown on Sunday, the Ballydoyle handler said: "We didn't know whether he would handle the surface and it looks like he probably didn't. Joseph said he was grand until he came off the bridle and then he was all at sea."
Each of O'Brien's six runners on World Cup night failed to finish in the frame, although both Giovanni Boldini and Magician ran with credit.
Giovanni Boldini came home well to grab fourth in the UAE Derby, while last year's Breeders' Cup Turf winner Magician encountered traffic problems on his way to finishing sixth, beaten three lengths, in the Sheema Classic.
"Ryan (Moore) was delighted with Giovanni Boldini. In an ideal world he wouldn't have wanted to be so far back, but it's just the way it worked out on the first bend," said O'Brien.
"He ran a very good race, he definitely gets a mile, but I'm not sure if he'd get further. He'll probably go for one of the Guineas.
"Magician ran well. It was a bit messy on the first bend, we were always going to drop him out though. Joseph said he gave a blow two furlongs out and he didn't get a lot of help in the straight.
"He ran well, we're happy with him and we might train him for the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. He could run before that, as long as the ground is OK - he wouldn't run on bad ground."

John Ryan is considering the Spring Cup at Newbury on April 12 for Ocean Tempest, the 20-1 winner of the William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday. Ocean Tempest: Trip to Newbury appears likely The five-year-old grey belied big odds and a quiet run of form in Dubai to take the first big prize of the English Flat turf season by nearly two lengths. Newmarket-based Ryan accepted the Lincoln had been a long-term ambition for the gelded son of Act One, but could now take aim at another big handicap prize in a fortnight's time. Ryan said: "We had planned for the Lincoln for ages, so it was very rewarding that we pulled it off. "We'll have to see what the handicapper does now, but I'm hopeful, more than believing, that he won't be too harsh on us. "That (the Lincoln) was the plan, but we'd like to go to Newbury for the Spring Cup if the ground was right and he was still eligible to run in it. "If the ground doesn't come soft, we'll bide our time

Tidal Bay remains at the summit of the weights for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, for which 65 horses are still in contention. Tidal Bay: Leads the Grand National entries There were just eight horses removed at Monday's forfeit stage, with Roi Du Mee, Katenko, Bog Warrior, Mossey Joe, Godsmejudge, Same Difference, Goulanes and Sunnyhillboy all out of the reckoning. Tidal Bay will shoulder 11-10 and attempt to become the first horse since Red Rum to carry top weight to victory in the Aintree spectacular. The 13-year-old, who unseated his rider in the 2011 Grand National, could be joined in the line-up by stablemates Rocky Creek, Hawkes Point and There's No Panic, although the latter is not guaranteed to get a run. Second on the list is Nicky Henderson's pair of Long Run (11-9) and Hunt Ball(11-7), while the Seven Barrows handler is also responsible for Hennessy hero Triolo D'Alene (11-6) and Shakalakaboomboom (10-3), who sneaks in near the bottom of the handicap. The betting market is headed by last year's third Teaforthree (10-12), who represents Rebecca Curtis. Other leading contenders to have stood their ground are Monbeg Dude, Rocky Creek and Burton Port, while Prince De Beauchene and Double Seven are two of Ireland's main hopes. The final horse to get into the field is One In A Milan for the Evan Williams. As things stand the four reserves are Gooneyella, Swing Bill, Soll and Minella For Value.

Sandy Orr, owner of Crabbie's Grand National hope Triolo D'Alene, cannot contain his excitement as what he describes as the "biggest day of them all' at Aintree draws ever closer. Triolo D'Alene: Topham winner attempts to graduate on Saturday Orr is not one of Britain and Ireland's leading National Hunt owners, but the Scot has been involved for almost 12 years and the enthusiast from Oban believes his brave Hennessy hero is the best his silks have graced. Another inspired purchase by Anthony Bromley, who sources the majority of Nicky Henderson's French recruits, the son of Epalo made a winning debut for the 74-year-old and his wife Caroline at Ascot in January 2012. While still reflecting on horses such as Terramarique, who proved a revelation for the Orrs when Henderson got hold of him in May 2006, it is fair to say the pair have owned lots of rather less salubrious horses over the years - and not even they would have dreamed what was about to follow after an encouraging start at the Berkshire venue. Orr said: "We have not splashed out huge sums of money, but what is for sure is that we love jump racing and this fellow has given us a marvellous time. "We were very excited at Ascot when he won, but it was when he won the Topham last season that we really started to dream." The seven-year-old has endured some minor niggling injuries along the way, but he is still relatively lightly raced for his age and he gave Orr his greatest moment in racing when defying odds of 20-1 to win the Hennessy in November. He said: "What happened at Newbury was just a special moment for us all. "He very much shaped like a horse that would stay the Grand National distance that day and although he has gone up in the weights, we have the Hennessy in the bag and nobody can take that away from us." Barry Geraghty had pleaded with Henderson to keep him fresh and off his old mark for the Aintree marathon post his Topham triumph last season, but connections were vindicated in taking their chance in the prestigious handicap and his trainer is expecting plenty of improvement from his latest effort in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Henderson said: "Barry begged me not to run in the Hennessy but you cannot take these risks with horses you would like to run in the Grand National. "Yes we would love to be 10lb lower, but if he falls at the first it would feel like we have wasted the season with him (had he not run in the Hennessy). "Our gut feeling is that he will get the trip. He is not a soft ground horse and that is why we did not run him after the Hennessy. "We know in the modern day that we are not going to get good ground for him at Aintree." Triolo D'Alene won the Topham last season on good to soft ground and Henderson believes his spin in the Gold Cup was an ideal prep-run for his Merseyside assignment. He continued: "Based on the fortnight he had between his run at Ascot and his run at Newbury, we were very keen to get a run into him before Aintree and it could be that the Gold Cup came at a perfect time. "Sandy and Caroline have had reasonable success with the horses they have had with me, but this horse is by far the best they have owned and I am over the moon that he is bringing them so much joy."

4.00, fourth race
An employee of Keith Dalgleish did not have an identity card to gain access to the stables and had to be issued with an emergency pass. The Stewards found the trainer in breach of Rule (C)40.5 and fined him £80.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, BIOTIC, ridden by Andrea Atzeni and trained by Rod Millman, compared with the gelding’s previous run at Newbury on 20 September 2013, where it finished seventh, beaten 11 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that BIOTIC had strengthened up since its last run and appreciated the all-weather surface. The Stewards ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
4.30, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into possible interference at the one-furlong marker. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that GO FAR, unplaced, ridden by Tim Clark, had interfered with MAC’S POWER (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Robert Winston. The Stewards found Clark in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding, in that he had allowed his horse to drift right. They suspended him for 2 days as follows: Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 April 2014.

McCoy delays National call
Tony McCoy is unlikely to make a decision on his ride in the Crabbie's Grand National until the final declarations are made on Thursday.
The record-breaking jockey is poised to choose between Irish challengers Colbert Station and Double Seven, both of whom are owned by JP McManus.
But McManus' racing manager, Frank Berry, told the Guardian that McCoy was expected to make up his mind "about half an hour before the jockeys have to be declared".
Berry said: "Double Seven wouldn't want a lot of rain.
"Colbert Station, any rain wouldn't matter to him, he'd handle any ground, which Double Seven wouldn't."
McManus is also likely to be represented in the great race at Aintree on Saturday by the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Lost Glory, but he seems unlikely to be on McCoy's radar.
Berry said: "He hasn't set the world on fire. It's hard to fancy him."
Kim Bailey, who won the Grand National with Mr Frisk 24 years ago, believes The Rainbow Hunter offers punters "unbelievably good value".
The 10-year-old gelding unseated his jockey at the Canal Turn last season but returns to Merseyside in fine spirits, having claimed the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster on his last outing in January.
Bailey told the Telegraph: "He's not a Mr Frisk. For a start he's only 16 hands.
"He is very small, but he is agile and never made a semblance of a mistake last year. It wasn't his fault the jockey got knocked off. He has as much chance as anything else. He's in good form. I'm very happy with him and Aidan (Coleman) rode him in Lambourn on Friday and was happy with him.
"On the day with Mr Frisk we really thought he'd win. Everything was in his favour and when I saw him in the stable his eyes were bright and I could see he was in the zone. I'd never be as confident with The Rainbow Hunter, but we're going there without any great pressure.
"He was 50-1 last year, he's 33-1 this year and I think that's unbelievably good value. He's got class and he'll stay."
The forecast rain this week will give trainer Peter Maher optimism Big Shu can give Ireland a fighting chance of winning a first Grand National since 2007.
Maher's nine-year-old finished third in the defence of his cross-country crown at Cheltenham last month, but the County Kildare handler is anticipating further improvement at Aintree.
He told the Irish Times: "He came out grand. Good ground is not his business and it was a better race this year.
"He's always best on his third run. I think he was short at Cheltenham. He'd been sick a month before. Cheltenham was a remarkable run for everything to go against him. The ground went against him, things didn't go right, and Balthazar King is a good horse around Cheltenham. I was just so pleased to get him back in one piece after what happened during the week to the horses and jockeys that got hurt."

Local hero has excitement building
Not content with having another shot at winning the Crabbie's Grand National, Across The Bay's local owners have even begun writing their own headlines.
"I've been using the strapline, 'The Princess and the Paupers'," said Kevin Coyne, a member of the Scotch Piper triumvirate responsible for the Donald McCain-trained 10-year-old.
"Because of the parallels with us and Monbeg Dude, who of course has royal connections with Zara Phillips, I think it's a nice fit. When you bear in mind we bought this horse for just 10,000 quid it's all very thrilling.
"We'll all be wearing our Across The Bay scarves in the parade ring beforehand so we'll be easily recognisable. It will be another very proud day to represent our region in the world's greatest jumps race."
Coyne, a lawyer from Crosby, near Aintree, unsurprisingly talks a good game. here is, however, clearly more substance behind his ebullience than mere pre-race idealism.
Having kicked-off his career in Ireland, where he won four times, Across The Bay had been nearing the edge of racing wilderness following a succession of disappointing efforts for his former trainer, Noel Meade.
Another poor show at Punchestown in May 2011 led to Meade's acceptance he had reached the end of the line with him, and suggested to his owners he be sold. The Scotch Piper syndicate could not let him go, though, and promptly bought him back to be trained by McCain in Cholmondeley, whose family ties with the National require no elaboration.
Three victories last season, including in the Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock, elevated Across The Bay into the 2013 National, in which he jumped well enough but could finish only 14th.
Yet despite having unseated Jason Maguire in the National Trial at Haydock in February, his gutsy victory at the same track two months earlier convinced McCain the staying chaser was worthy of another go in the big one.
Allied to a nice-looking weight and a favourably damp forecast, Across The Bay would become the first Mersey winner of the National since John Halewood's colours were carried to victory by the Ginger McCain-trained Amberleigh House in 2004.
"We went along to Abbey Road for the weights lunch in February and when we saw we had 10st 11lb our hearts absolutely leapt," said Coyne, who shares ownership of the horse with his brother, Anthony, and Graham Worsley.
"We think it's a fantastic weight and a lot of people at the National lunch told us that we've got a good chance. He's a mudlark, so that wet forecast is giving us plenty of hope."
Although the going on Monday morning was described as good to soft, good in places, rain has been forecast every day heading into the weekend.
Tidal Bay remains at the summit of the weights, for which 65 horses are still in contention after Sunnyhillboy, Godsmejudge, Mossey Joe, Roi Du Mee, Bog Warrior, Same Difference, Katenko and Goulanes were scratched at the confirmation stage.
Jamie Moore, whose exploits aboard Queen Mother Champion Chase hero Sire De Grugy have gained him many new admirers this season, will ride Welsh National winner Mountainous.
Trainer Richard Lee said: "Jamie's riding well and has also ridden the horse before, so it makes perfect sense."
Pineau De Re turned in a smashing effort at the Cheltenham Festival, when a close third in the Pertemps Final, and he will be partnered for the first time by Leighton Aspell.
Trainer Dr Richard Newland said: "Leighton finished second in the National (Supreme Glory in 2003) and has schooled him over the Grand National fences already. Pineau has done all of his major work now so it's just a case of keeping him cantering away."
Lion Na Bearnai's chances have been given a nice fillip after two-times Irish champion jockey Davy Russell pledged his allegiances to the 2012 Irish Grand National winner. Russell was in inspired form on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival in March when he secured three winners, including the Gold Cup with Lord Windermere.
Trainer Thomas Gibney said: "We've got Davy, which is great news. The jockey did pretty well the last time he came to England and he also rode the horse at Fairyhouse in February."
Veteran jockey Brian Harding has been called up for the potentially plum ride on the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Burton Port. Runner-up in the Hennessy Gold Cup in 2010 and fourth in the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup, the classy 10-year-old joined O'Neill from Nicky Henderson at the start of this season.
Although early results were not too inspiring, he ran with more zest when runner-up in a veterans' chase at Newbury at the start of March and has been well supported in the ante-post markets.
Mick Meagher, racing manager for owner Trevor Hemmings, said: "Brian Harding is going to ride him. He's rode plenty of winners for us in the past and we're happy to have him. He's been to sit on the horse already and everyone seems happy. He ran a lot more encouragingly last time, so let's hope he takes to the place."
Acknowledging an "unsettled" forecast, clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch said: "The ground is lovely at the moment but we're keeping an eye on the weather. I had a walk round again with Chris Dennis (British Horseracing Authority course inspector) this morning and there is a lovely cover of grass and the course is in great shape.
"However, there has been talk of some showers so we will monitor that closely and issue any updates on Tuesday morning. The forecast for the next few days is unsettled and a band of showers is meant to be arriving on Tuesday afternoon though the exact timing of the rain is uncertain."
Any considerable deterioration of the ground could be bad news for Battle Group.
Trainer Johnny Farrelly said: "The plan is to run, but it's all down to the ground. If it did come up soft, that would be far from ideal, so we'd have to think about running instead running him over hurdles (at Aintree on Thursday) and then going on to the Scottish National."

Orr excited about Triolo's chances
Sandy Orr, owner of Crabbie's Grand National hope Triolo D'Alene, cannot contain his excitement as what he describes as 'the biggest day of them all' draws ever closer.
Orr has been involved in ownership for almost 12 years but the enthusiast from Oban believes his brave Hennessy hero is the best his silks have graced.
Another inspired purchase by Anthony Bromley - the bloodstock agent that sources many French recruits for Nicky Henderson - the son of Epalo made a winning debut for the 74-year-old and his wife Caroline at Ascot in January 2012.
The couple had enjoyed mixed success with horses in their name since Terramarique, who was a revelation when Henderson got hold of him in May 2006, and both were keen to keep their feet on their ground after Triolo D'Alene's winning bow in Berkshire.
Orr said: "We have not splashed out huge sums of money but what is for sure is that we love jump racing and this fella has given us a marvellous time.
"We were very excited at Ascot when he won, but it was when he won the Topham last season that we really started to dream."
The seven-year-old has endured some minor niggling injuries along the way, but he is still relatively lightly raced for his age and he gave Orr his greatest moment in racing when defying odds of 20/1 to win the Hennessy in November.
He continued: "What happened at Newbury was just a special moment for us all.
"He very much shaped like a horse that would stay the Grand National distance that day and although he has gone up in the weights, we have the Hennessy in the bag and nobody can take that away from us."
Barry Geraghty had pleaded with Henderson to keep him fresh for the Aintree marathon and preserve his mark after his Topham triumph last season.
However, connections were vindicated in taking their chance in the prestigious Grade Three handicap and his handler is expecting plenty of improvement following his latest effort in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Henderson said: "Barry begged me not to run in the Hennessy but you cannot take these risks with horses you would like to run in the Grand National.
"Yes we would love to be 10lb lower but if he falls at the first then it will feel like we have wasted the season with him.
"Our gut feeling is that he will get the trip. He is not a soft ground horse and that is why we did not run him after the Hennessy.
"We know in the modern day that we are not going to get good ground for him at Aintree as they will water to ensure the ground has some soft in the going description."
Triolo D'Alene won the Topham last season on good to soft ground and Henderson believes his spin in the Gold Cup was an ideal prep-run for his Merseyside assignment.

Spring in the air for Lincoln hero
John Ryan is considering the Spring Cup at Newbury on April 12 for Ocean Tempest, the 20-1 winner of the William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday.
The five-year-old grey belied big odds and a quiet run of form in Dubai to take the first big prize of the English Flat turf season by nearly two lengths.
"If the ground doesn't come soft, we'll bide our time."

Mukhadram plans to be discussed
William Haggas is keen to let the dust settle on Mukhadram's fantastic performance in Saturday's Dubai World Cup before deciding on the next plan of attack.
Narrowly beaten by Al Kazeem in last year's Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, Mukhadram went on to finish third in the Coral-Eclipse before earning a deserved return to the winner's enclosure in the York Stakes.
The five-year-old signed off for the year with a fair fifth in the Champion Stakes and made his return in the world's richest race at Meydan.
Haggas has revealed his stable star did not enjoy a smooth preparation during the days leading up to the showpiece contest, but he performed with great credit on the night to finish second to Godolphin's African Story, four lengths clear of the third horse.
Haggas said: "He hasn't arrived home yet, but he seemed fine when I saw him on Sunday morning. He was a bit tired, but he was sound, which is the main thing.
"He didn't have a great 48 hours leading up to the race. He had a quiet day on Thursday as he was four out of four fifths lame and I would have said he was a 33-1 shot to run at that stage.
"He was only able to have walk out on Friday, but my team did a great job and he ran a great race.
"He was a little bit fresh early on and didn't settle as well as we would have liked, but I thought Paul (Hanagan) gave him a marvellous ride.
"People forget what a bad draw he had and he had a lot of running to do to get himself into the race, so we're very proud of the horse.
"I will be having a discussion quite soon with Sheikh Hamdan (Al Maktoum, owner) about where we go from here.
"I have a few things in mind, as I'm sure he does as well, so we'll have a chat and see what we come up with.
"A lot will depend on how the horse is."

Diablo fires for red-hot Spencer
Jamie Spencer continued his fine run of form as he drove Castilo Del Diablo to victory in the BetVictor.com Conditions Stakes at Kempton.
The last of the Fast-Track Qualifiers guaranteeing a Good Friday outing at Lingfield on All-Weather Championships Finals Day, the two-mile contest was run at a sedate pace, with Spencer having a mid-division spot on the David Simcock-trained five-year-old as Clowance Estate did the work up front.
The latter stuck to his guns bar a blip down the back straight but dangers were all around just over a furlong out and after getting on terms, Spencer, who had a double in Dubai on World Cup night, was in no mood to be denied as the post loomed, recording a head success from Noble Silk, with the long-time leader another nose further back in third.
Victory for the 6-1 winner sees a spot secured in the 32Red All-Weather Marathon Championship Conditions Stakes on April 18, which has a prize fund of £150,000.
Biotic landed a few chunky wagers following the six-furlong Family Fun At Kempton On 19.04.14 Handicap.
Backed into 5-4 favouritism, the Rod Millman-trained three-year-old was rarely troubled on his first foray into handicaps. Andrea Atzeni was keen to get a nice pitch along the far rail from stall two and made most of the running en route to two-length verdict over the game Jalebi.
Millman said: "He's big, but he's still weak. I think he'll be a lovely horse in 12 months' time. He's never been off the bridle at home."
Ryan Moore landed the Sheema Classic aboard Gentildonna at Meydan on Saturday and was in the rather more becalmed Kempton winner's enclosure after the Download The BetVictor App Now Maiden Stakes
Arab Spring, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and sent off the 4-6 favourite, found Arable a willing foe for a long way but the four-year-old colt was well on top by the time he pulled a length and a half clear at the line.
Moore was later on the mark with another well-supported favourite in Dutiful Son. Jeremy Noseda's 1-2 market leader came strongly from off a stop-start pace to take the 6 Places At Aintree At BetVictor.com Handicap by a length and three-quarters from Vincentti.
Cathedral then emerged the most comprehensive winner of the day in the BetVictor 6 Place Grand National Handicap. The 7-2 chance, trained by Ed de Giles, already held a commanding lead at the top of the home straight under Oisin Murphy and extended his advantage to six lengths over 15-8 favourite Minstrels Gallery.
De Giles told Racing UK: "Invincible Spirits have a great record round here and this track suits him a lot better than at Lingfield. We'll get him on the grass now and see what he can do."
Dazzling Venture (11-2) overcome distinct truculence going to post for the Grand National 6 Places At BetVictor.com Fillies' Handicap to win well for jockey Natasha Eaton on her 27th birthday.
It had fleetingly appeared a match between Kenny's Girl and Lily Edge, but Eaton came fast and late on the outside of the protagonists to collect by three and three-quarter lengths for the Alan Bailey team.

Ground concerns for Henderson
Nicky Henderson is philosophical about the likelihood of soft ground for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday.
The Seven Barrows trainer still intends to be four-handed in the world's greatest steeplechase with Triolo D'Alene, Hunt Ball, Shakalakaboomboom and Long Run, although he does not expect the first three named to be suited by the conditions, with the Merseyside track good to soft after rain overnight and further showers forecast through the week.
All four Henderson contenders completed their preparations with flying colours on Tuesday morning.
He said: "I think it's bound to be on the soft side, they'll make it that way. For Triolo, Hunt Ball and Shaka all three of them want good ground, but they are probably not going to get it.
"Long Run will cope with softer ground more than the others possibly. I accept they want to slow the ground down, but I hope not too much.
"They all finished their work this morning. They all schooled again. All went well and their prep is more or less finished."
The champion trainer is still seeking his first Grand National triumph, having had two seconds including Zongalero, who was his first runner back in 1979.
Donald McCain, on the other hand, followed in his late father Ginger's footsteps by getting on the roll of honour with Ballabriggs in 2011.
He will be double-handed with Across The Bay and Kruzhlinin, who will go for the big one rather than the Betfred TV Handicap Chase on the same card.
"He's aiming to run in the National, he's grand. I don't know who rides him yet," said the Cheshire trainer.
"Across The Bay is in good form as well and we're happy with them."
Following Monday's five-day stage at which 65 were confirmed, connections of those directly below the top 40 will be hoping for withdrawals by the final declaration stage on Thursday.
A random ballot for those on the same weight at the cut off point has been made with the David Pipe-trained Swing Bill in pole position followed by Goonyella, Soll, Night In Milan, Minella For Value and Saint Are.
Tony McCoy, who ended his National hoodoo on Don't Push It in 2010, is unlikely to make a decision on his ride until final declaration time.
The record-breaking champion jockey is poised to choose between Irish challengers Colbert Station and Double Seven, both of whom are owned by JP McManus.
But McManus' racing manager, Frank Berry, told the Guardian that McCoy was expected to make up his mind "about half an hour before the jockeys have to be declared".
Berry said: "Double Seven wouldn't want a lot of rain. Colbert Station, any rain wouldn't matter to him, he'd handle any ground, which Double Seven wouldn't."
McManus is also likely to be represented in the great race at Aintree on Saturday by the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Lost Glory, but he seems unlikely to be on McCoy's radar.
Berry added: "He hasn't set the world on fire.
He is very small, but he is agile and never made a semblance of a mistake last year. It wasn't his fault the jockey got knocked off. He has as much chance as anything else.
"He's in good form. I'm very happy with him and Aidan (Coleman) rode him in Lambourn on Friday and was happy with him.
"He was 50-1 last year, he's 33-1 this year and I think that's unbelievably good value. He's got class and he'll stay."

Dude all the rage for National
As the market intensifies ahead of Saturday's Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree, Michael Scudamore's Monbeg Dude was the one most punters were interested in on Tuesday.
Given his royal connections, a fairytale outcome could await for racing and punters alike.
Part-owned by former England rugby union player Mike Tindall, who is married to the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips, the nine-year-old is a former winner of the Welsh National and landed a competitive handicap at Cheltenham earlier in the season.
His price was cut across the board, with William Hill as low as 10-1 from 14-1 following what was described as a "wave of support" and the Leeds-based firm expect him to challenge for big-race favouritism on the day with Teaforthree.
Betfred cut Scudamore's charge to 12-1 from 16-1 and Coral 14-1 from 16s.
"I couldn't tell you where the money is coming from," said Scudamore.
"He's in the best shape we've ever had him, but this race more than any other is the one in which you need plenty of luck.
"Paul (Carberry) sat on him during Cheltenham week and popped him over a Grand National fence then. He knows him well, he's not going to gain anything else by coming over this week to ride him."
William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke said: "We were expecting a move to back Monbeg Dude with his famous connections appealing to the public, but the heavyweight punters have also come in for him.
"We've seen an increase in the flow of money for the horse and also some significant wagers. It seems inevitable that he will challenge Teaforthree for favouritism."
Betfred spokesman Andrew Griffiths said: "It wasn't a question of 'if', but 'when' the money would arrive for Monbeg Dude.
"Now there is momentum behind him, we would expect his price to shorten further as the week progresses."
Clerk of the course Andrew Tulloch reported a drying day on the National course but that the forecast remained "unsettled".
He said: "I have just walked the courses and left the going descriptions as they were this morning.
"There have been drying conditions today after the welcome rain last night. The weather forecast remains unsettled at least until the start of the Crabbie's Grand National Festival on Thursday, with four millimetres of rain expected tomorrow."
Trainer Liam Cusack is hopeful of a big run from his hope, Last Time D'Albain.
The 10-year-old showed a liking for the big Aintree fences when finishing third behind Triolo D'Alene in the Topham Chase last year and Cusack is hopeful he will stay the marathon trip, having schooled well over the replica National fences at the Curragh last week.
Cusack knows exactly what it takes to run well in the National, having ridden Ebony Jane to finish fourth behind Miinnehoma in 1994.
He said: "Last Time D'Albain has come out of his last race really well and we're hopeful of a good run.
"He schooled over the National-type fences at the Curragh on Friday and we were very pleased with him. We're hoping Robbie Colgan will ride him but that won't be confirmed until Thursday.
"We're bringing him over on the 8am ferry on Wednesday morning as we wanted to give him a bit of time to settle in. We brought him over a bit later last year but I think that arriving the day before racing will benefit him.

Special One set for Aintree Hurdle
The New One will attempt to atone for an unlucky run in the Champion Hurdle by aiming to go one better than 12 months ago in the Doom Bar Aintree Hurdle on Thursday.
Nigel Twiston-Davies' stable star was badly hampered by the fatal fall of Our Conor at Cheltenham, but the way he flashed home up the hill suggested he would have played a part in the finish.
The New One was narrowly beaten by Zarkandar as a novice in this race last season and Twiston-Davies and his jockey-son, Sam, will be hoping for a bit more fortune.
Taking him on is former champion hurdler Rock On Ruby after connections decided to put a chasing career on the back-burner following an error-strewn round of jumping in the Arkle.
Another reverting to the smaller obstacles is Nicky Henderson's Grandouet.
With Zarkandar likely to take up on option on Saturday in the Silver Cross Stayers' Hurdle, Paul Nicholls instead relies upon Irish Saint and Ptit Zig in the two-and-a-half-mile contest.
Willie Mullins had Hurricane Fly and Annie Power entered but instead saddles Diakali, who ran such a game race to finish fourth under top weight in the County Hurdle.
Alan King's Grumeti, winner of the Grade One four-year-old juvenile hurdle at the meeting two years ago, completes the field of seven.

Dynaste spearheads Bowl sextet
Ryanair Chase hero Dynaste heads a field of six declared for the Betfred Bowl Chase at Aintree on Thursday.
The David Pipe-trained grey justified stable confidence as he landed the Grade One prize at the Cheltenham Festival.
Though the Ryanair was over two miles and five furlongs, the extra half a mile he has to travel on Merseyside should hold no fears as he won the Mildmay Novices' Chase over course and distance last April.
The first three home in the Bowl last year are set to do battle again.
Irish raider First Lieutenant got the verdict 12 months ago and Mouse Morris' charge goes for a repeat.
Philip Hobbs' runner-up Menorah and the Paul Nicholls-trained Silviniaco Conti, who was third, will be trying to reverse the placings.
There is a second Irish challenger in the shape of the Tom Taaffe-trained Argocat, winner of the Red Mills Chase at Gowran in February.
Houblon Des Obeaux, from the Venetia Williams stable and ninth in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, completes the sextet.
