The competition between Great Britain and Ireland at the Cheltenham Festival has been given a title - The Prestbury Cup. Quevega: Irish banker again? The Prestbury Cup runs from the first race of the four-day meeting, the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle, on Tuesday, March 11 until either country has 14 winners or more. Last year, for the first time, there were more Irish-trained horses winners than British-trained, with 14 trophies taken back across the Irish Sea. There are a total of 27 races during The Festival, not including the charity Flat race, the St Patrick's Day Derby, on Thursday of the meeting. Sophia Brudenell, Communications Manager for the South West Region of Jockey Club Racecourses, commented: "The competition between Ireland and Great Britain is an element of The Festival that has grown hugely in significance over the last few years, noticeably when Ireland had more winners than Britain last year for the first time. "It therefore seemed appropriate that the competition between the two countries should be given an official title, hence the name The Prestbury Cup. "With such strong entries from Ireland this year, as well as hundreds of British-trained horses running, I'm sure The Prestbury Cup will provide a great narrative to The Festival." The Prestbury Cup, named after the nearest village to Cheltenham Racecourse, will be presented to jockeys and trainers from Ireland or Britain once the winning country is confirmed. The Cup itself has been sealed with some hallowed Cheltenham turf, so the winning country will be taking a little bit of Cheltenham with them. Irish-trained successes at The Festival 2013-14* (27 races) 2012-5 (27 races) 2011-13 (27 races) 2010-7 (26 races) 2009-9 (26 races) 2008-7 (25 races) 2007-5 (24 races) 2006-10 (24 races) 2005-9 (24 races) 2004-4 (20 races) 2003-6 (20 races) 2002-5 (20 races) 2001-cancelled 2000-3 (20 races) 1999-5 (20 races) 1998-4 (20 races) 1997-3 (20 races) 1996-7 (20 races) 1995-4 (20 races) 1994-3 (20 races) 1993-6 (20 races) 1992-2 (19 races) 1991-2 (18 races) 1990-2 (18 races) 1989-0 (18 races) 1988-1 (18 races) 1987-1 (18 races) 1986-4 (18 races) 1985-2 (18 races) 1984-4 (18 races) 1983-5 (18 races) 1982-6 (18 races) 1981-3 (18 races) 1980-4 (18 races) 1979-5 (18 races) 1978-6 (12 races**) 1977-7 (18 races) 1976-5 (18 races) 1975-5 (13 races***) * Record, although The Festival was previously three days up until 2005. Prior to The Festival's extension to four days in 2005, the previous record was eight wins in 1958 (when 18 races were run). ** In 1978, the third day of The Festival was abandoned due to snow. The Triumph Hurdle and Gold Cup were subsequently run in April. *** In 1975, waterlogging caused several races to be lost.

Aintree racecourse have announced that 100 horses have stood their ground for the Crabbie's Grand National following Tuesday's scratchings deadline. Home Farm (left): One of 100 entries for the Crabbie's Grand National Home Farm's participation in the £1-million race could depend upon his performance in the Carrickmines Handicap Chase at Leopardstown on Sunday Arthur Moore's charge emerged as a contender for the Crabbie's Grand National following a third in last season's Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse and has shaped encouragingly in two starts this term. The seven-year-old, who has only had six starts over fences, was beaten three and a half lengths by Rupert Lamb in a two-mile rated chase at Naas in November, before staying-on to take fifth in the valuable three-mile Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas festival. Moore, who saddled the 2008 runner-up King Johns Castle and whose father Dan sent out L'Escargot to win the Grand National in 1975, reported: "Home Farm will run at Leopardstown on Sunday. We will see how he gets on there before making a decision about the Crabbie's Grand National, but we are expecting a nice run. "He has been fine since his run at Christmas. It was a good run but it was a tough ask under top-weight, so we were happy enough with him. "I can't complain with the weight he has been given for Aintree, 10st 6lb is a nice racing weight but naturally his lack of experience is a concern." The 16 entries for the Carrickmines Handicap also feature fellow Crabbie's Grand National hopes Colbert Station, who fell at The Chair last year, improving eight-year-old Double Seven, and Topham Chase third Last Time D'Albain. Tidal Bay (16/1) continues to top the Crabbie's Grand National field on 11st 10lb and is one of seven remaining contenders for seven-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls. Other notables for the Ditcheat handler include Welsh National runner-up Hawkes Point, Argento Chase second Rocky Creek, and London National victor There's No Panic. Ireland's champion trainer Willie Mullins, successful with Hedgehunter in 2005, has halved his initial entry of eight with Saturday's impressive Bobbyjo Chase winner On His Own heading Boston Bob, Prince De Beauchene and Vesper Bell. Nicky Henderson also has four going forward led by 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Long Run and decisive Hennessy Gold Cup winner Triolo D'Alene. The seven-year-old captured last season's Topham Chase over the Grand National fences and will step up his preparation for Aintree with a gallop before racing at Newbury on Saturday. Further Crabbie's Grand National clues could be uncovered this weekend with six-day entries for the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster and Kelso's Premier Chase featuring a number of leading Aintree contenders. The following 15 horses were scratched: Rubi Light, Planet Of Sound, White Star Line, Midnight Appeal, Away We Go, Renard, Highland Lodge, Merry King, Ikorodu Road, Liberty Counsel, Quel Esprit, Up The Beat, Rockyaboya, Orpheus Valley, Ringa Bay.

Like the rest of the country, Prestbury Park was hit by the foul weather over the last month or so but was bathed in glorious spring sunshine on Wednesday. "Over the last 10 days we've not had a great deal of rain," said Claisse. "It's looking in great order, particularly the seven to nine yards we save all year for the Festival. "If I was assessing it today, I'd say it was officially soft on both courses, while the cross country is soft, heavy in places. "You are warned by the Met Office not to look further than five or six days, as the weather can be so volatile. However, (forecaster) John Kettley has been in touch and he said there could be up to an inch of rain between now and Friday next week."

The weights for the 11 handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival were unveiled on Wednesday afternoon. Fingal Bay: Carries top-weight in the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle Champion Hurdle Day on Tuesday features two handicaps - the Baylis and Harding Affordable Luxury Handicap Chase and the Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase. Triolo D'Alene (Nicky Henderson) and Houblon Des Obeaux (Venetia Williams), who both still hold entries in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, share top-weight of 11st 12lb in the Baylis and Harding Affordable Luxury Handicap Chase over an extended three miles. God's Own (Tom George) will have to shoulder 12 stone if he runs in the Rewards4Racing Novices' Handicap Chase, having been raised seven pounds following an excellent second in the Grade Two Pendil Novices' Chase at Kempton Park on Saturday. Although he is now rated above the limit of 140 for the two and a half-mile event, he is still eligible to run as he was rated 137 at the time of entry. Hunt Ball defied 12 stone in this race two years ago after also having his rating elevated following the entry stage. Medinas (Alan King) will have to defy top-weight of 11st 12lb if he is to become the first horse to win the Coral Cup twice. He shares top weight of 11st 12lb in the two miles and five furlong handicap hurdle with Irish challenger Dunguib (Philip Fenton). The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Steeple Chase is also staged on Ladies Day. Cheltenham specialist Balthazar King (Philip Hobbs) won this race in 2012 and will have to carry top-weight of 11st 12lb if he is to record a second success in the unique contest, which takes place over three miles and seven furlongs. Ladies Day also features the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle over an extended two miles, in which Abbyssial (Willie Mullins), a Grade Two winner at Fairyhouse on Saturday, has top-weight of 11st 12lb. On St Patrick's Thursday, Fingal Bay (Philip Hobbs) has been allotted top-weight of 11st 12lb in the three-mile Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle and the Minehead handler is also responsible for the handicap topper in the two and a half-mile Byrne Group Plate Handicap Chase with Wishfull Thinking on 11st 12lb. The day concludes with the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase over an extended three miles and a furlong in which Holywell (Jonjo O'Neill), winner of last year's Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle, heads the weights on 11st 12lb. Previous Festival winners Captain Cee Bee (Eddie Harty) and Dunguib (Philip Fenton) plus Diakali (Willie Mullins) share top-weight of 11st 12lb in the Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle, run over two miles and a furlong on Gold Cup Day. On the same day, Virak (Paul Nicholls) tops the weights in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle over an extended two and a half miles. In the concluding race of The Festival, the extended two-mile Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase, the weights are headed by Kid Cassidy (Nicky Henderson).

GODOLPHIN'S Ihtimal seeks to become the fourth filly to win the Group 3 UAE Oaks having already won the UAE 1,000 Guineas and she faces eight rivals in the Tapeta contest. In trying to emulate former stable companions Satin Kiss and Cocoa Beach, as well as the Ismail Mohammed-trained Folk, the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Ihtimal finds herself in opposition against eight of the ten fillies she beat in the first fillies' Classic three weeks ago. Bin Suroor, seeking a ninth win in the race, said: "She is a lovely filly and did very well for us in England last year. She thrived on arriving in Dubai, loving the warmer weather and always went well on the Tapeta. "We hoped she would win the Guineas and she did it well but has improved from that run. There is no reason why the longer trip should be a problem and she is well drawn so we have to be very hopeful." Bin Suroor's 2011 winner, Khawlah, remains the only filly to win this and then the UAE Derby. Runner-up to Ihtimal was Mensoora one of three in the race, as she was then, for Mike de Kock who won this with Raihana in 2010. Again the choice of Christophe Soumillon, Mensoora, who did not travel to Dubai very well, losing condition en route, made her local debut in the Cape Verdi, just a week before the Guineas. Outpaced close home by Ihtimal, Mensoora plugged on at the same pace, pleasing her trainer who again also saddles Magrooma (fifth) and Magroora (seventh). De Kock said: "We thought Mensoora was our best three-year-old filly but she really suffered during the journey from South Africa and we had to miss the Guineas prep race. "She badly needed the run in the Cape Verdi, against her elders and ran well behind Ihtimal who has to be the one to beat. Her European Group race form really stacks up well. "It is a horse race though and anything can happen but Mensoora does appear our main hope." The UAE 1,000 Guineas third, Feedyah, represents Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby, though the filly sports the famous yellow silks of Sheikh Ahmed. That was her seasonal reappearance and Appleby said: "This was always the plan - to run here via the Guineas as she would need every yard of the mile and this extra distance will certainly suit her. "We all know Ihtimal is going to be hard to beat but our filly is working well and should run a big race." Illuminating Dream, trained by David Brown, supplies the British interest but Jamie Spencer's mount beat only one home in the Guineas.

Ruby Walsh believes that Hurricane Fly can show his best at Cheltenham and finally put to bed the perception that he has not been at the peak of his powers around Prestbury Park. Ruby Walsh poses with Hurricane Fly Speaking to the Irish Examiner, the jockey was somewhat critical of his own performance in the saddle despite winning the Champion Hurdle twice in the last three seasons. Walsh said: "He was too free the first year. I sat too far back on him the second year, he wasn't 100% and last year I shouldn't have followed the ones in front. "They were going too fast and I followed them. I shouldn't have. Racing is about pace, about judgment. I knew they were going too fast. I should have backed my own judgment and stayed where I was but instead I was thinking of all the criticism I got the year before and I kept following them. That was the mistake I made and the horse got me out of it. It won't happen again. "If I hadn't followed the pace last year I'd have arrived turning in hard on the bridle and he'd have blown everybody away. But he still managed to win. I don't think I've done things right on him at Cheltenham. The day I'll get it right, he'll show England what he's shown Ireland." This year's race will see him pitched in against Our Conor and Jezki but Walsh remains confident of upholding the form of their recent renewals. He added: "I think he's in really good form, he's dug in twice to win, beaten Our Conor and Jezki in Leopardstown and I think the two harder races than he usually would have had is going to stand to him and I think he's an outstanding chance."

Trips to Royal Ascot and the Galway Festival could be on the agenda for Mick Winters' superb dual-purpose performer Missunited. Missunited: Could run at Royal Ascot The seven-year-old gave the trainer back-to-back victories in the Galway Hurdle last summer, following on from the success of Rebel Fitz 12 months earlier, and went on to win at Listed level on the Flat. She signed off for 2013 with a fine effort to finish third in the Group One Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp and Winters plans to mix hurdling and Flat racing again this term. If all goes well at the Royal meeting, the trainer is keen to see Missunited defend her Galway Hurdle crown. He told At The Races: "Missunited came back on Monday and she's in great form. I'd say her best run was her last run of the year and Royal Ascot is where her owners would like to be and there are plenty of long-distance races there. "The only problem would be if the ground came up very firm. She'd go on it, but she might not be quite as effective (as she is on soft ground). "I want to go to Galway. Unless something happens with the (Willie) Mullins mares for Punchestown (Festival), we'll sit tight. "She has a 144 mark over hurdles, which is probably nice. She might start off in Limerick (in May). She ran there last year and Inis Meain beat her. "She might be three weeks from her peak at that stage, but hopefully afterwards she'll be at her peak for the season." Like Missunited, Rebel Fitz has enjoyed a mid-winter break, but is not far off a return. Winters said: "He'll go to Mallow (Cork, March 27) and we'd be hoping then to go for the Powers Gold Cup (at Fairyhouse). "If he got placed in it or won it, he'd go up in the weights and if he ran at Punchestown and was in the money again, he'd probably take his chance in the Galway Plate. We'll summer campaign him and he looks fine and strong."

Paul Carberry has been booked to ride leading Crabbie's Grand National fancy Monbeg Dude in the William Hill Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster on Saturday. Paul Carberry: Back on board Monbeg Dude The Irishman is back on board the Michael Scudamore-trained nine-year-old whom he partnered to victory in the Coral Welsh National last season. Monbeg Dude's campaign has revolved round a crack at the Aintree spectacular in April and the Grimthorpe has been chosen as his prep race after he was forced to miss the Grand National Trial at Haydock two weeks ago due to an unsatisfactory scope. Monbeg Dude is owned by a syndicate that includes former England rugby union captain Mike Tindall, the husband of the Queen's granddaughter, Zara Phillips. Fellow owner and Gloucester rugby winger James Simpson-Daniel tweeted: "Pleased to confirm @paulcarberry will ride Monbeg Dude Saturday @doncasterraces."

Taunton, 27 February 2014
The Stewards gave permission for the second hurdle in the back straight, and the second and third fences in the back straight, to be omitted due to ground conditions.
4.10, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry under Rule (B)11.6 into possible interference on the run in. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that SOMEMOTHERSDOHAVEM, placed second, ridden by Aidan Colenan, had interfered with the winner, CEASAR MILAN (IRE), ridden by Harry Derham. They ordered the placings to remain unaltered. The Stewards found Coleman in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he allowed his horse to drift left handed. They suspended him for 1 day as follows: Saturday 15 March 2014.
4.40, sixth race
Andrew Quick, the owner/trainer of MY FELLA (IRE), did not have photo identification to gain access to the stables and had to be issued with an emergency pass. The Stewards drew his attention to Rule (C)39.2.2.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of COUP ROYALE (FR), ridden by Mr Will Biddick, and trained by Mrs Claire Hitch, which appeared to be tenderly ridden until being asked for an effort after jumping the third last, to finish fourth, beaten 2 ½ lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer that the gelding was lame post race. The rider stated that his instructions were to get the horse to finish the race. He further added that COUP ROYALE (FR) was fresh, so he tried to get him to settle, dropping him in down the back straight. He was able to get a breather into him on the final bend where the gelding then ran on through tired horses. The trainer confirmed these instructions adding that COUP ROYALE (FR) has had a lot of problems, has had a long lay off, and has been a very difficult horse to train. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations,

Southwell, 27 February 2014
3.50, fourth race
The Stewards noted that STEPPING AHEAD (FR), placed third, had interfered with RETURNTOBRECONGILL, unplaced, inside the final furlong but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved STEPPING AHEAD (FR)’s placing.
4.20, fifth race
The Stewards noted that FREDRICKA, placed fourth, had interfered with MAHON FALLS, unplaced, approaching two furlongs out but after viewing a recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved FREDRICKA’s placing.
4.50, sixth race
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, STAR UP IN THE SKY (USA), ridden by Amy Ryan and trained by Kevin Ryan, compared with its previous run at Kempton on 2 February 2014 where the filly finished ninth of eleven, beaten by 10 ½ lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that STAR UP IN THE SKY (USA) benefited from being ridden more prominently on this occasion.
5.20, seventh race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Adam McLean, the rider of SILLY BILLY (IRE), placed third, from three furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended McLean for 4 days as follows: Thursday 13, Friday 14, Saturday 15 and Monday 17 March 2014.
27/02/2014
Kempton Park, 27 February 2014
6.30, third race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider the apparent improvement in form of the winner, FLEETWOODSANDS (IRE), ridden by Liam Keniry, and trained by David Evans, compared with its previous run at Wolverhampton on 20 February 2014 where the gelding finished sixth of eleven, beaten by 10 3/4 lengths. They interviewed the trainer’s representative who stated that the gelding could not run in his declared tongue-tie at Wolverhampton because it came off before the start and could not be refitted, but this time FLEETWOODSANDS (IRE) had been fitted with a spoon bit in order to stop him from swallowing his tongue. Having also heard evidence from the handicapper, they noted his explanation and ordered FLEETWOODSANDS (IRE) to be routine tested.
7.30, fifth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Amir Quinn, the rider of SEEK THE FAIR LAND, placed second, from two furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Quinn for 2 days as follows: Thursday 13 and Friday 14 March 2014.
8.00, sixth race
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Adam Kirby, the rider of JAVA ROSE, placed second, from one and a half furlongs out. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Kirby for 2 days as follows: Thursday 13 and Friday 14 March 2014.
8.30, seventh race
The Starter reported that SNOWY VALLEY, trained by Paul Burgoyne, was unruly in the stalls and was withdrawn. The trainer’s attention was drawn to the restriction incurred under Rule (B)44 and informed that the gelding could not run until the day after passing a stalls test.
The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner, UNTIL THE MAN (IRE), ridden by Stephen Craine and trained by Natalie Llolyd-Beavis, compared with its previous run at Wolverhampton on 23 November 2013 where the gelding finished last of eleven beaten by 58 lengths. They noted the trainer’s explanation that the gelding benefitted from a drop in trip. They ordered UNTIL THE MAN (IRE) to be routine tested.
9.00, eighth race
The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why STRATEGIC ACTION (IRE), trained by Linda Jewell, entered the Parade Ring after the signal to mount had been given. Having heard evidence from the trainer’s representative they found the trainer in breach of Rule (B)27.5 and fined him £140.

THE status of Wolverhampton's beleaguered all-weather track plumbed new depths on Thursday when it emerged those who originally put down the surface no longer want to be associated with it.
The Martin Collins Group laid the track a decade ago but it has been heavily altered since and as criticism has mounted in recent months, with a number of trainers declining to have runners there, it has acted to distance its trade name ‘Polytrack' from Wolverhampton.
"Wolverhampton isn't Polytrack any more," group chairman Malcolm Wallace said on Thursday. "When we installed it back in 2004, it was a Polytrack and if that had gone wrong we would have put our hands up.
"But since then a significant amount of additional material, which is not Polytrack at all, has been provided by alternative suppliers and the composition of the surface has changed significantly since it was installed.
"Normally, if we install a racetrack, and we have installed 18 around the world with three more in the pipeline, we set up a package that includes a maintenance regime and we train the track executive how to look after it.
"One of our technical people normally goes back once a quarter. We tell them if there is any problem, call us and we will jump on an aeroplane and go and sort it because obviously it is not in our interest to have the track underperforming.
"It is significant the only one of those that isn't performing as it should do at the moment is at Del Mar in California, where exactly the same thing happened. They said ‘We don't need your help, we can do it ourselves' and the track has gone wrong.
"I rather liken it to having a Rolls-Royce. You don't take a Rolls-Royce to your local chappie, you take it to the Rolls-Royce dealer to make sure it is kept in good working order.
"It is the same with a track, it is not rocket science, but you do need to have some experience."
Martin Collins will bid for the contract to resurface Wolverhampton, which closes in April before the course is relaid, and Wallace stressed there has been no breakdown with track owners Arena Racing Company.
"We have very good relations with Arc, we are talking to the team all the time," he said.
"The track had changed significantly and we were copping a lot of flak over it and they accepted the fact it was no longer the surface that was installed because of the additional material they had added.
"They have our track at Lingfield. After performing really well for 11 years, properly maintained, what did they do? They resurfaced with Polytrack."
He added: "In the long history of racing, synthetic tracks arrived yesterday. Mistakes have been made, sure, but lessons have also been learned.
"I am absolutely convinced if a new Polytrack is laid the racecourse executive involved will pay very tight attention to what the installers are telling them."
Trainer James Given has noticed a definite change in the Wolverhampton surface. He said: "Without a doubt it is riding deeper and slower. I am lucky as I haven't had any injuries to horses, but it is a misnomer to refer to it as Polytrack. It doesn't ride like Polytrack and the kickback is not like Polytrack." ============================================== Thomas Brown is back Thomas Brown, one of last season's top apprentices, has his first rides back in Britain today. Without Sprinter Sacre the Champion Chase does not look special, and deigning to bet on these bridesmaids for one of the Festival's most prestigious prizes is tough work. That's harsh on Sire De Grugy, but we have real difficulty pulling the trigger at 9/4 on a horse who has had some tough races this season and doesn't seem to love that hill.
Benefficient and Al Ferof will only run if the ground is heavy, while Alderwood is unlikely to make Cheltenham. Arvika's record on his last three left-handed races reads FP3; there's been rumours Mullins may try a single cheekpiece to straighten him up. We're coming around to Captain Conan, as after that you've got the likes of Kid Cassidy as 4th favourite!
The story of the race could well be a third Festival win for a horse who was beating Hardy Eustace over hurdles six years ago! Sizing Europe is 12 now, but if he's held off father time for another March masterclass there's an argument he should be challenging for favouritism. He's the only one who tried to take on Sprinter Sacre last year, then got within 5L of the great beast at Punchestown.
His campaign started in October with a beating of Arkle runner-up Baily Green, and it's only really his last run where he jumped poorly and got swamped over 2m that suggests a regression. He's bounced back on spring ground before however, and 16/1 looks like ageism. To reclaim the crown would bring the house down.

=========================================== 17:25 Friday 28th February Racing Tips - 28/02/2014
It is perhaps not wise to put up a horse on the basis of one bit of form but there's really nothing else I fancy in the Doncaster opener. Seven lengths behind the decent Purple Bay in November, Biggar is potentially well treated off 105. He is eased a couple of pounds from handicap debut but that did come on ground that was a bit soft and over too far. In truth, I'd rather this was over an extra furlong but at least it's not a sharp track and he'll have a bit of company for the lead so a proper test should ensue. Hopefully the rain will stay away as he's better suited to decent ground and is a nice price at 11/1. Easydoesit is a course and distance winner who will also appreciate better ground than last time but he is up in class, as are most of the field. I can't split he and Ergo Sum, who is better off at the weights this afternoon and both are around 5/1. Perhaps the biggest danger could be Polstar for a yard yet to send out a winner this term. Doncaster 14.10 - Biggar 1pt e/w
The mares' hurdle over the same trip as the opener has the potential to be very classy indeed with a few unexposed debutants in this sphere. Of them, 1 really pings off the page and that's Koolala at 7/2. She didn't really turn up against the boys last time on the all weather, a bit of a surprise given she won on debut at Lingfield, but is very well treated for handicap bow off a mark of 113 and jumper's bumpers form can be sketchy. Her 2 hurdles efforts prior to last time entitle her to be a good 10lb higher here and I'll be surprised if she doesn't win. It will be interesting to see how previous conqueror Free Thinking gets on earlier in the day but she looks with siding with either way. The ones either side of the selection on the card could be the dangers. Roja Dove is particularly interesting on her Irish form and the yard are going well. Brijomi Queen would get the vote of the rest but is still a touch short against a very likeable favourite. Doncaster 16.20 - Koolala 2pt win
Short Takes has strong claims in the lucky last and I wouldn't put anyone of backing him at 9/4. His recent 2nd saw him bump into a well treated sort (that runs at Newbury today and I think will win) and he followed up with a win 8 days ago. Up jut 2lb, though both those efforts were on heavy, he may be even better on a sounder surface. He has struggled from this mark in the past though and I wouldn't mind searching for a big price in this poor quality field. So many have something to prove and the old boy of the field is no exception. Prime Contender returned after a massive 1735 day absence to finish 2nd to a Ullswater, who subsequently ran well off an 8lb higher mark, up in class. That was back in May and Jennie Candlish's 12 year old hasn't fired on 2 starts this term. However, the yard are in decent form and he's dropped back to that mark he was competitive from 9 months ago. Poor ground can be blamed for the runs this year and he has won at this track before. It's a longshot but he's 20/1 and it really is a race where no form horse (bar the fav) leaps off the page. Doncaster 17.25 - Prime Contender 1pt e/w ============================================

View from connections ahead of Saturday's StanJames.com Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury. Ulck Du Lin: Handicapped to win Paul Nicholls believes Rebel Rebellion and Ulck Du Lin have questions to answer as they aim to extend the trainer's tremendous record in the StanJames.com Supporting Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury on Saturday. The Ditcheat handler has saddled six of the last eight winners of the Grade Three handicap chase and had hoped to see last year's winner Pacha Du Polder defend his crown. But with testing conditions assured in Berkshire, Nicholls has had to change his running plans. Rebel Rebellion gave Ryan Mahon a real thrill when winning the Grand Sefton over Aintree's National fences earlier this season and the young jockey keeps the ride. Ulck Du Lin, the mount of Noel Fehily, has dropped below his last winning mark having failed to get competitive in four starts so far this season. "I really wanted to run Pacha Du Polder again. We've been aiming him for the race, but unfortunately the ground has gone heavy and that wouldn't have suited him," said Nicholls. "Rebel Rebellion went up a few pounds for winning the Grand Sefton. He ran well enough over two miles last time, but two and a half miles will suit him better. Hopefully he'll run well, but he is probably handicapped to the hilt. "Ulck Du Lin, on the other hand, is handicapped to win, but he has been a bit out of form this season, so he'll need to bounce back." Venetia Williams is enjoying a fine winter and also has two representatives in Shangani and Elenika. "Both horses are in good form and we are hoping for good runs from both of them," said the Herefordshire-based trainer. The Tom George-trained Majala looked a really smart recruit when winning three novice chases last season, but has been a little disappointing in four starts this term. The Slad handler is hopeful, however, of a better showing from his charge in this weekend's contest. George said: "He looked really good as a novice last season when he was blazing off in front, but you can't do that forever and he has been falling apart at the end of his races this season. "We decided to change tactics with him and dropped him in at Warwick last time and he actually settled really nicely. That was a confidence booster for him more than anything and hopefully it will have done him plenty of good. "He's bred to appreciate this sort of trip and I think Newbury is the ideal course for him, so hopefully he'll run well." The Peter Winks-trained 12-year-old Dashing George arrives in good form following a runaway victory at Fakenham a fortnight ago. With Nicky Henderson's Nadiya De La Vega a non-runner, the seven-runner field is completed by Tara Rose, representing the father-son combination of Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies.

View from connections ahead of Saturday's totepool.com Premier Kelso Hurdle from the Borders track. Wilson Renwick: Rides Clever Cookie Clever Cookie bids to maintain his excellent record when he lines-up for the totepool.com Premier Kelso Hurdle at the Borders track on Saturday. The six-year-old has won four of his six starts and finished second in the other two. He holds an entry in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham, but trainer Peter Niven is currently looking no further than this Grade Two test. "Hopefully as long as it's not too soft he should run a big race," said the North Yorkshire handler. "It's an option we've always had, obviously it would be nice if he didn't have a 7lb penalty. "I think he's progressive and this race ties in nicely. We won't think about Cheltenham at this moment in time." Mister Nibbles is the chosen one ahead of stablemates Man With Van and Fine Rightly from three Stuart Crawford entries. The County Antrim trainer travels to the Borders track with high hopes for the six-year-old, who opened his account in a two-and-a-half-mile maiden hurdle at Leopardstown five weeks ago. "He's in good form, he's been schooling well and hopefully the drying ground will suit him," said Crawford. "It's a good race to have a crack at, it's a good pot and a fairly open race. "I had three horses entered in it and it boiled down to the ground. I'd have been happy for any of them to take their chance. Hopefully the ground will be in this boy's favour." Hit The Top has a few pounds to find on known form but his trainer Sue Smith reports him to be in tip-top shape. "Obviously he's got to improve a bit, but he's going to go there in good form anyway," said the Bingley handler. Donald McCain has his fingers crossed a bad fall at Musselburgh when Clever Cookie was successful four weeks ago will not have affected Franciscan. "He had a heavy fall the last day but seems OK. It's worth taking a chance in quite an open race," said the Cheshire trainer.

View from connections ahead of Sunday's Carrickmines Handicap Chase at Leopardstown. Home Farm (l): Lines up on Sunday Potential Grand National candidate Double Seven aims to secure his sixth consecutive victory in the Carrickmines Handicap Chase at Leopardstown on Sunday. The 50,000 euro contest has attracted a strong field of 13 declared runners, with Martin Brassil's prolific winner Double Seven taking top billing in the colours of leading owner JP McManus. After completing a summer hat-trick at Kilbeggan, the eight-year-old struck at Limerick and Wexford in October and has since been given a mid-season break by trainer Martin Brassil, who claimed National glory with Numbersixvalverde almost eight years ago. Double Seven could also be Aintree-bound. Brassil said: "I'm happy with the horse. He's won six of his seven races this season, so we gave him a break after he ran at Wexford and he came back in late December. "He's a good ground horse, so he probably won't get his conditions this weekend, but we'll see how we get on. Aintree could be on his agenda, but as he's still a novice, there are a number of options for him." Double Seven is one of three runners for McManus in Sunday's two-mile-five-furlong feature. The owner's retained rider Tony McCoy takes the ride on Colbert Station, who unseated the perennial champion jockey at the Chair in last year's National. Mark Walsh partners Double Seven, while Alan Crowe gets the leg up on the Christy Roche-trained Knocklong. McManus' racing manager, Frank Berry, said: "Colbert Station is in good form and Ted (Walsh) is happy with the way he is going at home. "AP (McCoy) rides him and even though he's got top-weight, we're expecting a good run from him. "Double Seven is having his first run back and I believe the ground is drying out in Leopardstown all the time, which will suit him. "It will be nice to get a run into him and then we'll look towards the National, all being well, as we will with Colbert Station. "The horse down the bottom (Knocklong) has crept in off a nice weight and ran a good race in Leopardstown the last day. "Christy is happy with him and hopefully he'll run well in a competitive race." Last year's winner He'llberemembered is back to defend his crown and could hardly be in better form, having landed the lucrative Leopardstown Handicap Chase over the course and distance at the end of January. Trainer Paul Fahey said: "He's in good old form and he's been around the two miles and five furlongs twice at Leopardstown and won both times. I hope he can make it three from three. "He's gone up a few pounds in the weights for winning the last day, but he was entitled to and he's a hardened old horse at this stage. "I don't think the ground will bother him and we're expecting a big run." Daring Article, trained by Robert Tyner, was beaten just half a length by He'llberemembered and takes him on again. "He was just held the last day, but he's a couple of pounds better off at the weights, so we'll see what happens," said Tyner. "The horse is in good form and it looks like the rain is going to miss Leopardstown, so the ground should be fine for him. We're hoping he'll run another good race." Arthur Moore's Home Farm and Sarah Dawson's veteran Slew Charm also feature in a competitive heat.

The Stewards held an enquiry to consider why Peter Buchanan, the rider of NORTHERN OSCAR (IRE), placed fifth, beaten a head for fourth place, had appeared to ease shortly before the winning post. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race they noted his explanation that NORTHERN OSCAR (IRE) had run green and pricked his ears on the run in and, while he had not stopped riding, he had become slightly unbalanced due to the gelding coming back underneath him.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Jonathan England, the rider of the winner, GROOMED (IRE), from the second-last flight of hurdles. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. ============================================= 14:05 Saturday 1st March Racing Tips - 01/03/2014
Most selections will come from Newbury today but Doncaster has a classy handicap worth getting stuck into. I really fancy Court By Surprise, who goes well here, but there is a horse lining up that is closely matched with him and around double his price. Emma Lavelle's horse nosed out Night In Milan when they met over 3 miles here 14 months ago and has an extra 5lb in hand this afternoon. The Reveley horse ran in snatches that day but was strongest at the finish and he loves it here. His last success came over that same trip in a really fast time and he looks as though another 2 furlongs will be no problem under an extra 6lb. He's eased 2lb from last time when the ground was too soft and, though I think Court By Surprise is likely to come off a little better, I'd rather chance the 14/1 about the selection. The 2 Nicholls horses are potentially better than their marks but risky propositions. Doncaster 15.30 - Night In Milan 1pt e/w
The stayers hurdle at Newbury will be a real slog given the rain they've had. The course was lucky with the weather at the Hennessy meeting but have had bottomless ground ever since and it'll take a real slogger to win this. I think Brackloon High looks a likely winner and couldn't advise against backing him. Promised Wings really catches the eye though at a decent price. He is a course and distance winner, still only 7, but has been completely out of form this term. Only 2lb higher than his last winning mark, he was so impressive that day that an on song Promised Wings would be a real threat here. This is up in class but the time was good enough a year ago in similar conditions to suggest he's capable of stepping up. He technically has 11lb less on his back this afternoon but we have to hope it's a return here that sparks him back into form. It's a risk but one that looks justified as he's the outsider of the field at 16/1. Newbury 14.05 - Promised Wings 1pt e/w
The veterans could be in for another slog over 3 miles 2 and a half furlongs as 4 of the 7 have made the running in the past. The top 3 in the weights are certainly a trio that like to go forward and, of them, Carruthers could be the one to side with. He does have a serious weight to carry though and it would be a serious staying performance to make all this afternoon. Burton Port has a chance back at a track he goes well at and the wind operation may have made a bit of difference based upon his run last time. He made some mistakes but was staying on and easier ground over further could suit him. Tullamore Dew hasn't won in over 20 starts so isn't the obvious choice for a bet. He's so consistent though and has a 17lb pull with Carruthers for the latter's Hennessy win a couple of years ago. It is those 2 that make the most appeal here with conditions taken into consideration and I think there should be a little more between them in the market. Carruthers isn't necessarily big at 9/4 but, with people punting form the heart on the day, he is likely to go off shorter. He will stay all day and would just be vulnerable to a young improver. Fortunately there are none of those on show this afternoon and he very much looks the likely winner. Newbury 14.40 - Carruthers 2pt win
The following hurdle looks to be a contest between two handicap debutants, both of whom should handle testing conditions. On the face of it Kuda Huraa looks a little better treated than Tiqris given his form last season. I wouldn't have as much as 6lb between them and Philip Hobbs' horse looks about right on the basis of 2 recent novice runs. To his advantage is decent form coming into this, and that gives him every right to be a well supported favourite. Alan King's Kuda Huraa has been off the track for 9 months and not hurdled in 10. King has sent out a few winners after a break of late and, though it's likely he will not be given too hard a race, I fancy he could still be too good for these off a mark of 123. He shaped with promise behind the ill-fated Chatterbox 12 months ago over course and distance and is a more attractive price than the favourite at 7/1. Newbury 15.15 - Kuda Huraa 1pt e/w
The Newbury feature is very tricky with any of 4 or 5 that could go off favourite. I've been a consistent supporter of Shangani, especially over Venetia Williams' purple patch, but he stills flatters to deceive. Last time was a tough ask but, equally, this is a step up from recent handicap efforts. Having said that, it's the same for most in the field, this being the classiest contest on paper they've contested. A couple in the field like to go forward, Dashing George definitely will, and it'll need a stayer at the trip to win which puts me off the otherwise likeable Majala. Equally, I'm not sure Ulck Du Lin gets this far, though he has dropped to a really likeable mark. The nod goes to Tara Rose form a yard bang in form. She finished last season really well and would probably have opened her account first up this term but for a bump at the last. She then went over hurdles and followed up with a disappointing effort at Exeter on ground that may have been too quick for her. By Kayf Tara, a bit of cut is always likely to suit and she is related to some stayers who ran well on heavy ground. Her last win came over further than this at Cheltenham off 6lb lower and she has a big chance at 13/2 in a weakfish race for its class. Newbury 15.50 - Tara Rose 1pt e/w ============================================

NOTEBOOK.
We highlight a selection of the runners from the past week’s races who may be ones to watch out for in future races.
OSSIE'S DANCER doesn't look one of limitless talent, but has progressed gently in modest hurdle races in recent months, including on his latest start, when a six-length fourth at 16/1 in a maiden hurdle at Chepstow. Having been beaten 10 lengths by the fair yardstick Anay Turge at 100/1 on his previous start, he looks to be heading the right way and may have a small Novices’ handicap hurdle in him this season, maybe over 2m 4f or 3m. At Kempton, the Adonis Hurdle, a trial race for the Cheltenham Festival’s Triumph Hurdle, contained a number of interesting runners, although a few had question marks over them. One of those who stepped forward and shrugged off his question mark was the Paul Nicholls- trained SOLAR IMPULSE . Owned by Andrea and Graham Wylie, the four-year-old Westerner gelding had disappointed on his British debut in December, in the Grade 1 Juvenile Finale at Chepstow's Welsh National meeting. On this latest start, Solar Impulse was reunited with French jockey David Cottin, who rode him handily and although he was outpaced from two out by the eventual winner and runner-up, he still finished a fair third, beaten just seven lengths. On that basis, connections' reported plans to head for the Fred Winter, a juvenile novices' handicap hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, are interesting. In the Grade 2 Pendil Novices' Chase, Alan King's BALDER SUCCES impressed in victory, following up his win in the Grade 2 Kingmaker Novices' Chase at Warwick in good fashion. He's currently in the Arkle and has claims in that race, having plenty of speed and the stamina necessary to see out the uphill finish at Cheltenham, but may also or alternatively run in the equivalent chase at the Aintree Festival, over 2m 4f, which may also suit. He didn't beat the third-placed FOX APPEAL by all that much, and the latter has had a good season so far, being beaten by very good and well-regarded horses, and also won a Grade 2 himself before Christ- mas. He's not entered at Cheltenham and may be suited more by the Aintree race. Also at Kempton, in the Grade 3 handicap chase formerly known as the Racing Post Chase, ARDKILLY WITNESS ran well to finish fifth, considering that he didn't have a trouble-free passage through the race. Trained by Dr Richard Newland, Ardkilly Witness was a Grade 2 winner as a novice hurdler last season, over 3m, and that form suggests that he needs a good trip to be seen at his best over fences. He did win over 2m 5f at Wincanton on Boxing Day, by a long margin, but that novices' chase probably didn't boast the stiffest opposition and when facing better rivals on this latest start, he was doing all his best work at the finish, beaten only four lengths. He's currently entered in the Festival Handicap Chase and the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and 3m around Cheltenham with a decent gallop should suit him better than 3m around a speed track like Kempton.

STAT WATCH.
While form can only tell you what's happened previously, having an idea of which trainers are currently in form, or which jockeys have the best record at a certain racecourse, can help you to keep on the win- ning track. With relevance to this Saturday's televised races, this column highlights the current trends.
With this Saturday's Channel 4-televised ac- tion split between the Jumps meetings from Newbury (2.05, 2.40, 3.15 and 3.50) and Doncaster (2.20, 2.55 and 3.30), it may pay to take a look at the recent general Jumps form, in the hope of finding a few pointers. Tony McCoy continues his relentless pursuit of another seasonal double-century, having taken his tally for the current term to 192 win- ners by Monday, 24 February, 4 of which were ridden in the preceding week. The leading jockey for that week wasn't McCoy; Sam Twiston-Davies rode 6 winners and achieved a 40% strike rate, ahead of Tom Scudamore's 5 wins and 33% strike rate, and then McCoy, whose 4 wins equated to a 26.6% strike rate. As Scudamore is first jockey to David Pipe, it wasn't so surprising to find that Pipe enjoyed a purple patch last week, with 7 wins from 17 rides also giving him a leading 41% strike rate, with Nigel Twiston-Davies the only British trainer to better him by strike rate; 45%. An- other to do well was Ben Pauling, for whom 3 of his 4 runners finished their races as win- ners, recording a fantastic 75% strike rate. Newbury has a valuable card this Saturday, with four valuable handicaps all set to be tel- evised. The principal race is the Grade 3 Gold Cup Handicap Chase, over 2m 4f. Nicky Hen- derson's Hennessy Gold Cup winner Triolo D'Alene is an eye-catching entrant in this race, but Paul Nicholls' runners should be re- spected, given the trainer's awesome record in this race, having trained the winner in 6 of the last 10 renewals. Nicholls's Ulck Du Lin hasn't won over further than 2m 2f, but he is now just 1lb higher than his last winning mark, but his stablemate Rebel Rebellion possibly offers better value and more consis- tency. Henderson trained the winner of this race 10 years ago and his talented mare Nadiya De La Vega is attractive off a mark lower than her last winning rating. She is back over a more suitable 2m 4f trip and any quick- ening of the ground from soft towards good would help her case. The veterans' chase over 3m 2½f looks a good race, with the former Hennessy winner Carruthers set to line up, having run well when second in the Grade 3 Classic Chase at Warwick in January. He's a classy horse at his best, and this race has been won by top- weights previously. Also, Nicky Richards' horses have been in great form (50% strike rate last two weeks), and having finished a good second over distance in the Cumberland Chase, on heavy ground, he should have plenty of stamina for this race, and only went up 3lb for his win last time. At Doncaster, the Grimthorpe Chase looks a more suitable option for Triolo D'Alene, who is also entered in this race, given that it is run over further than 3m, and the slightly quicker forecast ground at Town Moor would probably suit him better than soft at Newbury. As sev- eral recent winners have run from out of the handicap, Nicky Richards' Tutchec catches the eye, having won his last four starts, includ- ing once over distance, while Donald Mc- Cain's Real Milan has fallen to what should be a competitive mark according to the pick of his form. Watch the markets for this race; all the last eight winners have been priced at 15/2 or shorter.

Race Ratings Saturday 1 March - 2.20 Doncaster Listed Mares' Novices' Hurdle (Class 1) 3m 110y
0-1542 Brijomi Queen 24 7 Nicky Richards Stable in good form with 2 winners from 4 runners in past fortnight, and while Brijomi Queen's early promise in bumpers has yet to fully translate to hurdles, she has progressed gently. The form of her seasonal debut win has been franked at a level, and the step up in trip may help, but she has a bit to find with the expected protagonists in this race. RATING 95 2-72 Bull And Bush 81 5 Alan King Form of bumper-second last season looks very promising, with winner unbeaten in all subsequent starts, including in Listed company last time. Number of subsequent winners behind, too, and looked in need of further when a good second on hurdling debut last time. Returns from a short break, but stable can get them ready first time. Unexposed. RATING 97 312242 Cannon Fodder 14 7 Sheena West Ran the smart Tagrita close last time on testing ground in a Listed mares' race at Wincanton. Expected better ground for this race should help her cause, and has each-way appeal. RATING 99 333 Dewala 30F 5 Michael Appleby Showed ability on the first three hurdling starts before Christmas, over shorter than this, and has been running respectably on the all-weather in last two starts, over the middle-distances. Should prefer longer distance in this race, but still has a lot to find. RATING 93 505511 Land Of Vic 24 6 Peter Bowen Has improved each time when winning last two starts, staying on well over 2m 5f in testing ground last time to beat fair yardstick Top Totti. Up in distance for this race, and in class, too, and while she deserves a chance at this level, others preferred. RATING 95 4-1111 La yla Joan 18 6 Gordon Elliott Followed up 3m Point-to-Point win with three wins from three starts over hurdles, winning very easily and looks very interesting in this company. Stable knows the time of day at this level and return to better ground should be no hindrance according to past form. RATING 98 4-2123 Luci Di Mezzanotte 98 6 Oliver Sherwood Held by Land Of Vic on bumper form last year, and also by Cannon Fodder on formline through the winner of this horse's last race. Extra distance and better ground should help, but has a fair bit to find relative to the best of her rivals here. RATING 94 1-51 Mayfair Music 86 5 Nicky Henderson Finished solid fifth in a Listed mares' bumper at Cheltenham three months ago, beating Bull And Bush and Land Of Vic. Stepped up on that form when easily winning hurdling debut in a mares' hurdle at Wincanton, staying on strongly at close. Stable in red-hot form right now and she should be on premises with probable improvement. RATING 98 4/3-90 Miss Lucky Penny 36 8 Ian Williams Has shown some form but has disappointed in last two starts over hurdles, on only appearances so far this season. No obvious reason why she should improve here. RATING 90 180-23 Our Pollyanna 14 7 Alan King Balance of form suggests return to better ground should help, and fair second on seasonal debut at Warwick (winner third in Listed race next time) suggests she's not without a chance. Still needs to show more here to enter serious reckoning for outright honours. RATING 96 2-1132 Spirit Oscar 15 6 Oliver Sherwood Won maiden and novices' hurdles back-to-back earlier in season, on heavy ground, but found wanting under a penalty when upped in class next time, and also held on chase debut last time. Could return to hurdles today, but not an obvious winner. RATING 94 209113 Truckers Darling 9 7 Don Cantillon Has plenty of stamina based on two recent wins over 3m+ in heavy ground, and return to better ground not necessarily that preferable on recent form. Held on handicap debut last time and has a lot to find with leading contenders. RATING 94 174111 Toubeera 14 8 Venetia Williams Took time to find her feet over hurdles, but has won five of her last seven starts, including at Grade 2 level, which makes her the one to beat. Versatile in terms of ground and this race looks within her compass. RATING 100

RACING NEWS.
Interest in Nicky Henderson's ace chaser Sprinter Sacre intensified this week when the trainer announced the champion chaser will be heading to Newmarket "for a full MOT" with equine specialist Celia Marr. After failing to sparkle in a workout with stablemate Triolo D'Alene last Saturday, Henderson confirmed that Sprinter Sacre would not be running in the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and will miss the rest of the season. Irish trainer Willie Mullins saddled his fifth Bobbyjo Chase winner in 10 years when the Andrea and Graham Wylie-owned On His Own won the Fairyhouse feature race last Saturday. On His Own is now priced between 16/1 and 25/1 for the Aintree Grand National. Just three weeks after breaking his leg, jockey Rhys Flint rode one of the biggest winners of his career when victorious aboard Kayf Moss in the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell last Sunday. Kayf Moss is trained by Flint's father, John, but the victory proved bittersweet for the jockey, as he subsequently re- ceived a whip ban for overuse of the whip during the finish of the race. The ban means Flint will miss the Cheltenham Festival and his planned ride on Kayf Moss in the Coral Cup, for which Kayf Moss is priced at 16/1. Irish-based jockey Bryan Cooper had his riding ban reduced to one day following an appeal for a ban after being found guilty of careless riding at Leopardstown on 9 February. Cooper was disappointed that the ban wasn't reduced further, and he will re- portedly resume riding on Thursday, 6 March. Harry Fry's unexposed juvenile hurdler Activial has been priced at 12/1 for the Triumph Hurdle after winning the Grade 2 Adonis Hurdle at Kempton in good style. Past winners of the Adonis who have gone on to victory at Cheltenham include Penzance, Zarkandar, Binocular and Punjabi. Although encouraged by the win, Fry said that Activial wasn't a certain runner at Cheltenham, following the feedback from jockey Noel Fehily, and may consider the equivalent four- year-old race at Aintree instead. Prolific National Hunt racehorse owner J P McManus enjoyed a red-letter day at New- castle where his horses finished one-two in the Eider Chase. Wyck Hill, trained by David Bridgwater, led home 6/1 favourite Smoking Aces in the 4m 1f marathon handicap chase, leading most bookmak- ers to cut his ante-post price from 40/1 to 25/1 for the Aintree Grand National. This year's renewal of the Oaks at Epsom Downs will be run in memory of the late Sir Henry Cecil, and titled 'Investec Oaks (in memory of Sir Henry Cecil), who died last summer at the age of 70, enjoyed frequent success in the fillies' 1m 4f Clas- sic, winning the race eight times. His most recent winner was Light Shift, in 2007. Dual Champion Hurdle winner Hurricane Fly is reported to be in good order by trainer Willie Mullins ahead of his bid to land the race for a third time. Mullins said he believed the 10-year-old son of Montjeu has been improving this season, and was particularly pleased with the way he won the last two of his three Grade 1 successes this term, which Mullins described as being "tactical."

Tony McCoy has chosen to ride At Fishers Cross, instead of the strongly fancied More Of That, in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. McCoy: Opts to ride At Fishers Cross instead of More of That The Rebecca Curtis-trained At Fishers Cross landed the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at Prestbury Park last March and after following up in scintillating style at Aintree, looked set to play a leading role in the major staying events this term. However, he was well beaten on his return to action in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury and after parting company with McCoy when beaten at the final flight in the Long Walk at Ascot, his season looked in tatters. He went a long way to repairing his reputation in the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham at the end of January, though, beaten a short-head by Knockara Beau and finishing ahead of returning four-time World Hurdle hero Big Buck's. More Of That, also owned by McCoy's retaining owner JP McManus, stretched his unbeaten record to four when winning the Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham in December, but Jonjo O'Neill's charge has not been seen since. Speaking in his column in The Telegraph, McCoy said: "Having, hopefully, chosen right by going for My Tent Or Yours in the Champion Hurdle, the next big decision was whether I ride At Fishers Cross or More of That in the World Hurdle and I can reveal that I am siding with At Fishers Cross. "He won last year's Albert Bartlett so we know he acts on the track and, having appeared to have lost the plot before Christmas, especially with his jumping, he was getting somewhere back towards his best in the Cleeve Hurdle when he was just touched off by Knockara Beau. "He did beat Big Buck's however and, although I know Big Buck's will come on a huge amount and is still the one to beat, At Fishers Cross will also come on too - it was as good as damn it his first race of the season." McCoy also revealed he would ride Kid Cassidy in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, Taquin Du Seuil in the JLT Novices' Chase and leading Grand National contender Teaforthree in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. "With Sprinter Sacre coming out everyone now thinks they have a chance and I suspect there will be one of the biggest fields in the past 10 years," said the champion jockey. "Sire De Grugy has the best form and is unquestionably the one to beat. Kid Cassidy is the only horse to have beaten him this season and that was at Cheltenham, but we were getting 10lb and I consider that a lot of weight. "If it was only two pounds or three pounds you might have fancied your chances of beating him again, but I reckon we'll have a job on our hands now. "I rode Kid Cassidy at Kempton where Nicky Henderson took 14 horses to work yesterday (Thursday). I was very pleased with him. He pulled my arms out, but that's him, he's a very hyper horse. He is not actually that quick and if you let him go he would not go much faster. He does everything on his nerves. "JP McManus has kindly consented to let me ride Taquin du Seuil in the JLT Chase even though he might have a runner and I believe Goodwood Mirage would have a terrific chance in the Fred Winter if the ground dries up. "I was very pleased with his run last Saturday and he would be much more effective on better ground. "Rebecca Curtis looks like she will run Teaforthree in the Gold Cup. West Tip always used to run in the Gold Cup before the National. "Though Noel Fehily is due to ride him at Aintree, he will ride Silviniaco Conti in the Gold Cup, so I have pencilled myself in to ride Teaforthree. "He may not be among the favourites but he will stay and he jumps."

Trainer Tim Doyle believes Mallowney will have to bring his A-game to Leopardstown on Sunday if he is to get back on the winning trail in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Novice Chase. Mallowney: In good order The eight-year-old showed smart form as a novice hurdler last season and has taken to the chasing game well, with a win at Naas in early January supplemented by some sound efforts in defeat against quality opposition. He was going well on his penultimate outing in the Irish Arkle until tipping two fences from the finish and chased home Bright New Dawn in Navan's Flyingbolt Novice Chase last time. Although this weekend's assignment is a step down in class, Doyle feels his charge still has plenty on his plate. Doyle said: "It looks a good opportunity for him and he goes there in good order. He came out of Navan well. He ran a good race, he was just beaten by a better horse on the day. "There are a couple of nice horses in the race on Sunday, so we'll just have to see what happens, but I think our horse will need to be at his best to win. "He's a consistent horse. He's run his race every day this season." Henry de Bromhead fields two against Mallowney in Darwins Fox and Moscow Mannon. Dual chase winner Darwins Fox makes his first appearance since October, while Moscow Mannon got off the mark over fences at the second time of asking with a smart effort at Naas three weeks ago. De Bromhead said: "Darwins Fox is coming back from a break and is in good form. He'd probably prefer a bit better ground than this, but hopefully he'll run well. "Moscow Mannon put up a good performance last time out and hopefully he can keep improving and run well on Sunday. "This is always a good race. Special Tiara was beaten a long way in this a year ago and went on to win a Grade One for me at Aintree. "They are all competitive at this stage of the season." Mount Colah, Some Tikket and Is Herself About complete a six-runner field.

Admirable grey Thousand Stars has an excellent opportunity to secure his first victory in well over a year and a half in the Ballsbridge Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday. Thousand Stars: Suited by the race conditions The Willie Mullins-trained 10-year-old has spent much of his career picking up minor honours behind brilliant stable companion Hurricane Fly, but has enjoyed some days in the sun, notably winning the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and the French Champion Hurdle twice. He was disappointing at Auteuil last summer, however, and finished last of five runners behind Hurricane Fly in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown's Christmas Festival. Mullins hopes a significant drop in class this weekend can help Thousand Stars gain a much deserved return to the winner's enclosure. "This looks a nice race to start him back in and I would imagine he'll be delighted not to see Hurricane Fly!" said the champion trainer. "Things have not gone right for him so far this season, but he is well suited by the conditions of this race and we're looking forward to getting him back." Thousand Stars faces just five opponents over two and a quarter miles this weekend on what will be his first start outside Graded company since his County Hurdle triumph almost four years ago. His stable companion Midnight Game, last seen chasing home another esteemed stablemate in Un De Sceaux in the Red Mills Hurdle at Gowran Park, is rated 21lb below Thousand Stars but is still second best in this field on official ratings. Mullins said: "It's very difficult to find races for these horses, so we're pleased this opportunity came up." Noel Meade's Busty Brown, Billy Harney's Joxer, the Edward O'Grady-trained Sailors Warn and Jessica Harrington's mare Burn And Turn complete the sextet.
